I wrote about this phenomina in my Daily Blog called "Re-Wet the actress" about good and bad continuity in film making where the Director would often take days to shoot the same scene in many different takes and when they had a break in filming they had to wet down the actress again to maintain the continuity. I cited the Tallulah Bankhead photo as an example and added several more examples as per the attached behind the scenes pics ...
Good directors always maintain good continuity during breaks in filming.
Sadly many do not, which is why in many films and tv shows the girl is wet and then it cuts away and in the next shot the actress is dry, or worse they cheat....i.e. the girl merely wets her hair but you can see her clothes are already dry.
