Here's an obscure one for you - back in the late 70s or early 80s comedian Peter Cook had a show whose name escapes me. It was a one-off special and featured Peter in various comedy sketches. Here's where it got better - there was a running gag with a loud New York taxi driver popping up now and again complaining that there were no wet blouses. In his opinion the only way to improve the show was by including wet blouses. Eventually there was a musical scene with Peter singing the song, "Lovely Lady Of The Roses" which he'd recorded with Dudley Moore back around the mid 60s.
So he's sitting on a bench singing his song accompanied by group of dancing girls. The taxi driver pops up again - "You've got the girls! You've got the blouses! Now put some water on 'em!" at which point the girls are sprayed with jets of water. Peter's lyric changes to, "Lovely ladies in wet clothes-es, with your shorts so pink and tight etc." as the girls get a good soaking. I'd love to get my hands on this scene again but I've never ever come across it or any mention of it.
It was a one off tv special called "Peter Cook and Company" that aired in 1980. I missed it because I was living in Hong Kong at that time.
There are a couple of Youtube channels that have some clips from the show, but not the scene you mention. I am suprised that it is not on YT today because it had a top supporting cast including John Cleese and Terry Jones from Monty Python as well as an up and coming comedian called Rowan Atkinson.
Let me know if you find it online.
There are lots of 40+ year old tv specials that have never been repeated or released for decades ... e.g. I am still looking for a copy of Michael Bentine's 1hr tv special from 1975 called "Bentine" which has an amazing wetlook scene that I saw at a friend's house, but was unable to record it because I was not at home with my VCR.
A bit of hunting around and I finally came across a very poor copy on Youtube. The trouble is that credits rolled over the dance sequence at the very end of the show. The wet blouses happened as an extra bit after the credits had stopped. This bit has been cut from the video. Typical. So near and yet so far...
Interesting. I will put that item on my bucket list to search for the full ending of this tv special.
That tv special was made at a time that the pair had split up their partnership and Dudley Moore was a rising star in Hollywood, first with "Foul Play" and then "10" and then with "Arthur". Cook was extremely jealous of Moore's success in Hollywood, and the pair were not on speaking terms so he was attempting some success in the USA as well by starring in a sitcom. Cook's attempts at success in America fell flat and he bombed, because his style of droll intellectual humour only appealed to college students in the UK and people who liked snooty nosed intellectuals like Alan Bennett, Jonathan Miller and Melvyn Bragg, but that style did not appeal to Americans.
Dudley Moore was a world class jazz pianist as well as being a very funny comedian. Cook was just a droll deadpan writer and not funny at all.
Peter Cook having his own variety show would have gone down like a lead balloon. It was not a wise move to have Terry Thomas, John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson on his show, who are great comedians that would easily overshadow the limited talents of Cook.
I daresay the same thing would have happened if they had given Bud Abbott his own show, minus Costello.
