Just an observation here and want to think of what others think.
It seems like clowning allows for a greater amount of pies. Most slapstick scenes (excluding producers catering to WAM) limit themselves to a pie or two. Occassionally there is a bigger pie fight or cake fight. But clowns seem open to getting hit with lots of pies! Even a civilian in a clown scene will normally take one pie (excluding the classic Allison Jack scene). But clowns are open to getting nailed with several pies. I'm wondering if it is because clowns are meant to be larger than life. Any thoughts?
Clowns are anarchic. They make mischief. The normal rules don't apply. That's why clowning is so enjoyable and there's no limit to the number of pies you can throw or receive.
I always considered it an unwritten contract that going on stage with a clown could get you pied, but being a clown means that it's always okay for you to get pied.
That's why I love unexpected clown makeovers. The unintentional clown is then a prime target for repetitive humiliation.
