That paint would have been heavy as hell in that long hair, though. Given all the movement involved and likely a few hours (days?) of filming that scene, her neck muscles would have been screwed.
I think her hair's up for all those practical reasons - another being ease of continuity as this choreographed scene with multiple angles would have likely taken many hours or have re-shoots on different days - but also because it's a dance performance aesthetic and focused on the body. Her head and face are heavily styled.
Tommy is quite different. It was an anarchic improvisation. It was intended to be filmed in one take with multiple cameras running because, like WAM scenes, it involved the destruction of the costume and the set. Unfortunately, as Ann-Margret fans will know, she cut her hand on a shard of glass from the broken TV screen. Filming stopped midway in and she was rushed to a hospital for stitches.
When shooting resumed they'd had to have the white costume cleaned, all the original baked beans (which had become putrid) disposed of and replaced etc. During the fantastic full-coverage climax of that scene where she is sopping in chocolate and beans humping a pillow etc ways had to be found to conceal her bandaged arm. So there are shots from both days in the scene.
I couldn't find the photo of her being carried off the set by a member of the crew (but I did find plenty of others from the scene).
