Supreme Court abortion bombshell suggests a staggering change in American life
A draft Supreme Court opinion suggesting the conservative majority may be about to outlaw the constitutional right to an abortion hit like a political lightning bolt Monday night.
The draft opinion, obtained and authenticated by Politico, heralds what would be a massive victory for the conservative movement decades in the making. It set off immediate condemnation and calls for action from leading liberal and medical groups and Democratic leaders, as well as protests outside the Supreme Court building.
The bombshell concerns a draft majority opinion, written by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, that slammed the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision enshrining the right to an abortion as wrongly decided. It was circulated in early February, according to Politico, but the final opinion isn't expected to be published until late June. Votes and language can change before opinions are formally released.
Yep. Elections have consequences. Sad day in the US. I just hope it inspires those who didnt vote in 2016 to see what they unleashed and vow to never let that happen again. But this wont make it illegal. It just lets the individual states make it legal or illegal- further dividing the country politically. Then we will truly have red states and blue states.

It kills the protection of a woman's private medical decisions on a federal level, and leaves women living in red states trapped. Especially in a country with no mandatory maternity leave, universal subsidized childcare, or easily accessible social programs to assist at risk families.
It also opens a can of worms about what other rights could be curtailed next. They directly stated in the opinion that they believe the rulings on Obergefell (gay marriage), Loving (interracial marriage), and Griswold (the right to purchase contraception without government interference) are built on the same logic that the Roe ruling was. Those are their next targets.

Came here to say this. It's not just abortion, it's all rights. It will feed into other things to like LGBT+. Basically red states are trying to turn the country into what they imagine the Bible says (which is nothing against LGBT+ and abortion but hey, they haven't read it so can forgive them for that..!). US Politics will be interesting though not much will change as the SCOTUS is 6-3 conservative (?), my personal hatred (why a judge for life? It's an impossible system that should be elected too). Horrific times ahead.
It is a distraction for the 50+ year old crowd from the Declared plan to phase out/privatize Social Security and Medicare. Trillion$ to be made. With a major bonus of Bigtime $UCKER BUCK$ Generated by the US versus THEM is PROFITABLE for Some Hucksters plus a religious kicker to justify any coincidental violence! Don't forget the hypocritical insistence on investigating the leak, because SOME INFORMATION IS PRIVATE!
First, Loving can't be overturned because of Thomas and Mrs Thomas, the seditiontists.
And to Wild Things commen, that was always the point the Federalist Society and the WSJ editorial board implied. Pit states against each other and if some poor woman needed an abortion, she could visit that state.
You know, these days it's easier to get an abortion in Ireland these days....
My late mother (died 1995 age 65 of unknown neurological causes & severe arthritis) was the Alice Paul Chapter of NOW newsletter editor in the 1980s. My dad supported her. She would be as enraged as I am now.
Don't care what some GOVERNMENT says: businesses have the right to require vaccinations. Government has no right telling businesses what they may or may require of employees.
I'm tired. It's not potential, it will be a massive attack on human rights. On top of the ones that states have already enacted to beat around the current protections. States rights to be facist? I'm getting deja vu to the slavery argument which I always found in bad faith since it's arguing that a state has the ultimate say over another human's inalienable right to live free.
For those who say, but I'm not a woman, I'm not llgbtqa+, I'm not in an interracial relationship, I don't use birth control anyway. Well, it's only a matter of time before they find something to come for in you too and criminalize your existence along with the rest of us.
Regardless whether someone is pro-gun or anti-gun: could somebody please tell WTF the point of the 2nd Amendment of the USA is if in practical reality there exists an absolutely IDIOTIC BEWILDERING array of ILLOGICALLY INCONSISTENT laws anyway restricting gun use-age? So this makes me question: what good is a constitutional amendment anyway? This would apply to ANYTHING: free speech, abortion.
My perception and outlook on life has never been stellar, and at the moment I simply can't see how things can ever improve for anyone, regardless of where you're based in the world or for what diminishing rights you're fighting for.
Whether it's abortion and healthcare, being LGBTQ+, the environment, affording the most basic cost of living, ongoing world conflicts... this really feels like it's at the point that politicians or people with money and power are in it for themselves (like they've always been, I know) and we're on the verge of complete anarchy.
I honestly don't see how this can change without wide spread and persistent rioting on scales that certainly haven't been seen recently and possibly haven't been seen ever.
I'm not one for tin foil hats... but the world is at a breaking point and cracks are definitely showing.
I'm pro-Courtney who just found out she's already 13 weeks along, but the egg never made it out of her fallopian tube so either she terminates the pregnancy or risks dying from internal bleeding.
I'm pro-Emily who went through IVF, ending up with SIX viable implanted eggs requiring selective reduction in order to ensure the safety of her and a SAFE amount of foetuses.
I'm pro-Becky who found out at her 20 week anatomy scan that the infant she had been so excited to bring into this world had developed without life sustaining organs.
I'm pro-Susan who was sexually assaulted on her way home from work, only to come to the horrific realization that her assailant planted his seed in her when she got a positive pregnancy test result a month later.
I'm pro-Theresa who haemorrhaged due to a placental abruption, causing her parents, spouse, and children to have to make the impossible decision on whether to save her or her unborn child.
I'm pro-little Cathy who had her innocence ripped away from her by someone she should have been able to trust and her 11 year old body isn't mature enough to bear the consequence of that betrayal.
I'm pro-Melissa who's working two jobs just to make ends meet and has to choose between bringing another child into poverty or feeding the children she already has because her spouse walked out on her.
I'm pro-Brittany who realizes that she is in no way financially, emotionally, or physically able to raise a child.
I'm pro-Christina who doesn't want to be a mother, but birth control methods sometimes fail.
I'm pro-Jessica who is FINALLY getting the strength to get away from her physically abusive spouse only to find out that she is carrying the monster's child.
I'm pro-Vanessa who went into her confirmation appointment after YEARS of trying to conceive only to hear silence where there should be a heartbeat.
I'm pro-Lindsay who lost her virginity in her sophomore year with a broken condom and now has to choose whether to be a teenage mom or just a teenager.
You can argue and say that I'm pro-choice all you want, but the truth is: I'm pro-life. Their lives. Women's lives. You don't get to pick and choose which scenarios should be accepted. Women's rights are meant to protect ALL women, regardless of their situation!

The original thought process for this when it was created was that Judges were for life (or until retirement) because they never intended or wanted the judges who were responsible for weighing our rights to be people who could be bought and needed constant reelection like our congressmen. They were SUPPOSED to always be for the LAW, both heart and letter, and not bound to political ideology, but human morality.
Their terms being lifetime were to be part of the checks against a fickle and swaying legislature, and an authoritarian executor.
It like most of the republic we tried to build failed. Because like any political office, money is involved. This was the most important thing the forefathers forgot or missed.
When you offer a law enforcement officer something to get out of an infraction it's called bribery and you go to jail for a very long time. When you a law maker something to get them to pass or block a law for your favor though? Pfft, that's just called Wednesday.
Personally, I feel if anyone is found offering or accepting any form of lobbying it should be the last form of high treason we have and they should be publicly tried and executed if guilty.
These people are supposed to be held to the HIGHEST standard, but they are the lowest common denominator.
America has been a failed country for over a hundred years.
And remember, just as this is possibly getting overturned at the federal level, this just means each state will be doing the same thing back and forth every time there is a new 51% majority.
American and it's leaders don't care about progression, they just fight to continually override what the previous side has done.

True. I do tend to be a bit of a keyboard warrior when it comes to politics as I can't really think of a better way to do things. My usual answer is normally "Thunderdome" or some such equivalence.
Perma-judges do have good points, but maybe not employed by the government who happen to be in charge at the time? Or a 10 year run? Or elected via other means...like a fight to the death in a large cageoh I've done it again
