Yesterday I indulged in some very messy fun with a friend. It was loads of fun and we had a great time. However after spending all evening and this morning cleaning up I did find myself thinking "I wish I had a kink which requires less effort!" For me scrubbing the gungey buckets is probably the worst job. I think its something about having my head forward doing it that makes me dizzy.
Having only ever done savoury once for a custom that is the worst clean up I have ever had to do - the force of the hose I was using to clean the pool causing cold water, coleslaw and off mayo to shower over me!
Something that Candy Custard and I have often commented on when we have been shooting is the number of messages we get saying "I wish I could do what you do!". When I'm scrubbing the gunge tank after already doing a 12 hour day, aching and shattered I find myself wonder "Do you really wish you could do this?". Don't get me wrong I love what I do but sometimes I don't think people realise the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. Also seeing as how I mentioned Candy I do have to say hats off to her as I really don't understand how she menages to clean up after one of the Asploshalypse sessions single handed!
My top tip would be to wipe up gunge where possible while still wet as, particularly on walls, when it dries on it can be a bugger to get off.

As much as it's a pain at the time, always clean up the mess whilst it's still wet - it's a nightmare trying to clean dried gunge from floors, ceilings, walls and gunge tanks!
Have plenty of old towels to hand, and bath mats are really good for wiping feet before running to the shower
A couple of times we've made "scrubbing out the buckets" part of a follow-on wetlook shoot. The girls change into clean outfits, either very practical like overalls and sportswear, or very impractical like posh dresses, and then scrub out the buckets and hose each other down in the process. I'm also blessed with some amazingly helpful models who will scrub out the dungeon while waiting their turn to head upstairs and put on their next outfit or their own stuff if at end of a shoot day.
When I do things, the plug goes in the bath after I'm roughly clean, then get the buckets in. A sponge or similar helps and warm water - rinse them with the shower and you can rattle through the buckets quickly - don't forget to dry them before stacking! The hours of prep and deprep to set a pool up here means it needs to be more than a quick session to be worth the effort. Candy's new studio sounds like it will be easier to prep and clean!

Why don't you inflate a pool, line it with plastic sheeting, and save your plumbing?

Would hydrophobic spray work on the gunge tank walls?
That would be why I more or less gave up on indoor messy, there are still a few slime mixes I use but these will dissolve quite happily. My main interests and loves are deep mud anyway, being I live not far from a good source of tidal mud most of my exploits take place there and clean up still a pain is more or less limited to a good swim and then laundering.
no messy clean up with wet, which is one of the reasons i love it, i id do mud i would make a outs adventure, near ponds or river so that would make clean up easier, if doing oil thats none to bad , simple containers to re use the oil again for another session
Bob you'll be pleased to know the new studio is designed with ease of clean up in mind - just a few feet from the gunge tank there is a drain with a tap over it for bucket cleaning and could possibly be hooked up to my pressure washer as well for hosing the tank down, the resulting water simply swept into the drain - and the highest level of professional grade non slip flooring certified even against 'oil and bare feet'
I'm sure it will still be physical work of course but hopefully not as backbreaking as in the past with the constant threat of falling over while you work, and 100 feet at least to negotiate and attempt to stay upright while carrying 15kg buckets to empty!
Still not finished yet but it's getting much closer now at last.
Would hydrophobic spray work on the gunge tank walls?
No, we tried this before. also on buckets - it doesn't stand up to the amount of use and re-use. I would be doing 3 sessions a week and then studio hire all weekend with up to 30 scenes filmed. The hydrophobic spray lasted maybe 2 sessions before slowly disintegrating
Paint the walls in a semi-satin finish and paint the floor with an epoxy enamel then make sure the gap between the wall and floor is waterproof then get the hose out...
I have got this down to an art now, first of all put tarp down all round pool and sheeting on wall. Then get a thick heavy plastic tarp to go on the inside and line the pool. All that has to be done then is to scoop excess gunge with dustpan into buckets and then fold tarp in and dispose and then just odd bit of the pool needs cleaning.
Oh, Bob - I clearly remember my brief stint helping you out with the clean up duties a few years ago lol!! Buckets, buckets and then more buckets.....
I think my clean up plans for my sploshing events are pretty sound - I use paddling pools with large sheets inside, squeegee out the residual gunge then rinse out the pools. If sploshing outside I use an 8-man tent (cheap off ebay) and either rinse out with a jet wash or just skip it..... Still have to wash out the bloody buckets though.......
