So for the first time in a while I'm treating myself to a proper vacation. I've been looking for places to go that I haven't been before and some friends here have mentioned visiting them in Chicago!
Tentatively, I'm looking at taking a long weekend in June maybe 16-21st.
Looking for ideas on places to see and things to do. Also, reaching out to see if anyone is up for meeting up at some point!
I went to Chicago almost a year ago. Cloud gate is SO much smaller than you think it is. Also the architectural tour/riverwalk tour was the best experience and ironically the last one I did. If you want to see Wrigley, you have to book at least a day ahead of time. I'd rather see Soldier field but there weren't any tours. I walked around the outside and wow. If you want to do the Willis Tower (spelled S E A R S) and go to the 103rd floor, I suggest not eating anything at least 2 hours before you go. Even the elevator ride was a trip in itself.

This is what I have on my list so far:
Navy Pier Visit the site of the St Valentine's Day Massacre Donut Tour? - I read this is a thing Sears Tower LEGOLand Discovery Center Chicago Theater Hemingway Birthplace Museum DAT PIZZA!
Of course, with gas being the obnoxious bitch it is and flights not really being any cheaper, that's going to cut A LOT into my budget...
If you want pizza, do yourself a favor and go to a South Side establishment that serves thin crust cut into squares. You can also have some tourist-bait if you want (Chicago's Pizza has great deep dish slices while Labriola has the best whole deep dishes), but for one night you'll feel like a local if you go thin.
Also, go the Wiener's Circle for a leisurely hot dog. You can really relax and ask lots of question when you order. And on the off chance anyone yells at you, you don't have to take it. Fight back!

Seconding this
Echoing the recommendations for the architecture boat tour and the Art Institute. Check out an improv show at Second City, walk along the lakefront trail, or see if there are any neighborhood street festivals when you're visiting. Chicago is a great food city. Pizza, hot dogs, and Italian beef are the big ones. West Loop has a lot of hip restaurants. If you like beer, there are a lot of breweries and taprooms (some favorites: Revolution, Half Acre, Maplewood, Off Color).
Oooh! That's awesome dude! So glad to hear you're able to get a vacation. I'm only about an hours drive away from Chicago. I like to visit Shedd Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry when I go.

Malort is actually good, but you have to train your brain to taste the grapefruit flavor and not the wormwood flavor. Once that happens, it's like night and day.
I'd also suggest driving about 45 minutes to an hour north to Milwaukee. Numerous breweries with tours, German beer halls, brats, cheese curds, Harley Davidson museum, the Fonz statue, and depending when you go the numerous festivals every weekend including Summerfest with 12 stages of music.
Definitely check out a restaurant or two in West Loop/Fulton Market. Au Cheval, Duck Duck Goat, and Green Street Meat's are highly recommended. High Five Ramen or Ramen Takeya if you like ramen.
Art Institute is probably the best museum in the city and the architecture boat tour is worth it too.
Otherwise, get out to some of neighborhoods. Logan Square, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, Pilsen, and Bridgeport all have great food and drinks.
Marz is an excellent brewery too if you're in Bridgeport.

That sounds interesting!

If you're saying that, I'll definitely have to. Also, I did drop you a message about this and possibly seeing if you were around at some point!

I've heard that replacing your snacks with grapefruit is a great way to lose 90% of what joy you have left in your life.

I'm an Irish Potato, we don't get alone with those Idaho pieces of starch!

We have a chain here called Meat and Potatoes. Nothing spectacular but great name for a midwest restaurant. Pretty much everything is served on a bed of fries. Gyro is my favorite.

I actually like Malort too. Everyone else I know hates it, but I still always convince them to drink it with me!
Also, if the Cubs are in town when you're here, tickets are pretty cheap on Stubhub because the team is kind of bad (I say this as a suffering fan). Wrigley Field is such a cool classic ballpark in the middle of a vibrant neighborhood and I forget that it's not the norm!

I never heard of malort before today, but that's probably because I wasn't of legal age to drink when I moved

Milwaukee is closer to 2 hours. I live on the NW side and was just down in Chicago. Downtown to downtown would be about 90 miles, but Chicago usually has rush hour 24/7 lol

I'd add a trip to the lakefront to your list.
There's walking and bike lanes and plenty of beach to enjoy. I'd recommend the beaches further North between Lawrence and Montrose since there's plenty of parking and it's more peaceful up that way generally speaking.
So, for a variety of reasons (work, money, legal, etc) this is on hold now. Will hopefully revisit in late summer early fall when Bosses, gas, probation officers etc aren't being pricks...
I'm still going to go...eventually. Even outside of here, I have friends and family fairly nearby. But I had planned on like next week. Unfortunately, a number of things continually piled on until I just couldn't do it right now.
I really appreciate how many people too the time to respond to me and give me ideas. I'll get there...just not looking like this summer.
