Given how the smartphone and tablet revolutions have changed the way people access the Internet in recent years, I'm wondering what kind of a system the average modern UMDer is most likely to use to browse WAM sites and download and view WAM content?

Feel free to add comments on related issues like preferred video resolution and file sizes too.

I'm usually on iPhone, except when I goto chat room or downloading. All mothership purchases are on laptop due to necessity. House wifi sucks, so cell data is faster.

I have multiple PCs (Windows and Mac,) multiple tablets (iOS and Windows RT,) and multiple smartphones (iOS and Android.)

I'm genuinely curious if anyone actually uses their "smart TV" garbageware. I played with the stuff built into my TV the day I bought it in 2011, and haven't touched it since, because it's awful...

Desktop primarily, but my phone is filled with GIFs and some videos.

I use my laptop primarily (it's an Alienware quad-core i7, w/ 16GB DDR5 RAM & a 6GB GPU and a touch-screen 17" monitor) so for me file size is not an issue, I'd rather hi quality HD every time!
That said if I'm away with work, I may use my iPad / iPhone (for convenience if I haven't taken my personal laptop or there is no free wi-fi in hotel) to connect for the purpose of viewing PMs or keeping up date with a "hot" thread I've been following (as clearly I can't use a work-issue laptop to access a site like UMD).
I very rarely download pictures to the iPad / iPhone and I don't bother with videos on either.

At the Mothership/Vidown, we get a surprising number of hits from game consoles in the download system. They seem to work just fine. So does pretty much every other device in the history of the internet, EXCEPT Apple's walled-garden of IOS devices. Those users can make the purchase, but they have to use a non-IOS machine to do the actual download.

Since 75% of our initial catalog visits are from search bots, I decided to use the checkout page data instead

I'm downloading via my laptop, but for playback I'm connecting an external HD to my Blu-ray player, so I can watch vids on the 48" plasma. Watching porn on a telephone seems only slightly less lame than watching LAWRENCE OF ARABIA that way.

Desktop PC. I only have that and a phone, and I keep the phone entirely porn-free because I don't trust myself to not leave it unlocked and unattended on my desk at work.
(Besides, why watch stuff on a tiny screen?)

Normally my iPhone however I quite often use the PS3 (one of the perks of my own flat) lol

Main reason for asking is I'm toying with rebuilding the main Saturation Hall website http://gungemaster.com as a modern responsive design that will work equally well on computers or phones, but wondering if enough customers would benefit from it to be worthwhile doing. Still thinking about it and weighing up the options. So thanks for all the data!



Thanks for those! Interesting that it doesn't quite tally with the poll results or the comments, but presumably there's a subtle difference between general customers and those of us active on the forums.



Here using mobile data for downloading content would get seriously expensive, though being able to turn my phone into a wi-fi hotspot to get laptop connectivity for remote-fixing server issues is handy. Would you download to iPhone if it was possible? I like to watch stuff on the biggest screen possible, but I'm guessing on a phone would be a lot more private.



Good question! Not got one myself, just seen loads of them advertised. The friends I know who use non-computer things to access the net mostly use games consoles, rather than smart TVs.

That sounds very much like how I'd do things, I tend to want the most powerful desktop PC I can sensibly afford, with a good screen, and to watch things at maximum res - there's a reason all Saturation Hall videos shot since 2012 have been Full-HD. Really must get a tablet and experiment, currently only have laptop and smartphone.

Yep, I'm largely with you there, though sometimes seeing a nicely taken "before" photo when browsing the UMD by phone, and them imagining what subsequently happened to that so smartly dressed young woman, can be fun. However I can understand some people, esp living in shared houses or anywhere else where total privacy isn't so easy to come by, might prefer the idea of only having content on something small enough to always have with you, rather than a computer that other people could in theory access / search through.



Yep, agreed, same as me, though see my comments above re why I think some people might prefer to use a smartphone.



How do you save the files on the PS3, is there a hard disk, or external storage?

The advantage of my phone is it's easily portable, and I don't watch stuff for the first time on it. I just want quick access.

For first time watching, it's either on my 30" desktop monitor or on my TV (I have a dedicated computer hooked up to my television).

Interesting way of doing it, and that makes sense, esp re quick and portable access to a scene you've already seen in detail on a big screen. Ta for the input!

I've been going through such a conversion with the bones of UMD for about a year, and still am not there yet. I think the idea is that it's really important to get sites to the point where users don't have to pinch and zoom, they have finger-sized targets for links, etc. Maybe about 1/3 of the internet is on mobile right now, but in a matter of months it'll be 50% or more, so we really should design for both.



Those stats were from Google Analytics, which takes all visitors into account. A huge majority of our traffic never signs up or logs in, so those stats may vary hugely from whatever response we get from members on the forums.

I think that people who become members and get more involved and read the forums and such, are much more likely to be doing it from a desktop or laptop.

True. Major shift in design thinking, though good for users.

I have Apple TV's in every room.

The idea of buying a "smart TV" is just stupid. I want my TV to be dumb and just play the picture from anything I just plug into it.

I would rather upgrade a $70-100 box every year or two than a $700+ TV so I can watch the stuff I want to watch without the experience being shit.

I don't really watch stuff on a phone or a tablet because... tiny picture. I don't watch anything on a computer either because I own TV's.

If I access something on a phone or tablet, it just gets thrown straight to the nearest TV from the device.
