Although you ask the impossible with your 'one pic only' rule, this one does sum up a lot of what does it for me:

Aspects: The mess doesn't make the face an unrecognizable mush. It rather suits the parts of the head. On the one hand the head is completely messed up but on the other hand you can still see, where the eyes are, the mouth, the hair etc.
To put it pluntly: Most substances and the way they are used make a quite good mess but the victims look the same most time and lose their identity.
Make them a messy artwork instead! They should get messy but stay recognizable - at least a bit. This picture gives you an idea.
You strike a hard bargain. Skimmed through A LOT of photos to find this one. There were a few amateur photos I might have selected because I like the idea of amateur mess, but this photo doesn't need context to be sexy as hell. The total coverage. The smile. It's all there.
This picture from Hiroki Cream sums up my taste in wam perfectly - everything in extreme. Extreme amount of gunge. Extreme coverage. Extreme colours. Every bit of the head, face, hair and neck completely obliterated in one huge go. I just like to see someone become a barely-humanoid mound of mess!
