I ran a search on YouTube for "pie fight" and found this Steve Allen clip. I don't know if this is one of those "lost" wam clips often mentioned on his forum.
Yes, it's Jayne Meadows. I remember seeing it live or as a rerun. There was also a TV Guide feature about it. That's not really Groucho Marx. The guy that Meadows pies is Louis Nye, a frequent sidekick for Steve Allen. Some of the chorus girls (and boys) get pied, too in the freeforall at the end.

I don't really think this ratio has changed much, unfortunately. Maybe its 4-to-1 now?
Depends on whether you're in the mainstream or here! I remember this sketch, too. Steve Allen was one of my heroes for his comedy and also his musical abilities. Met him once at a jazz festival.

Well, the only mainstream pies you'll find now are on Latin gameshows (where it's about 2-to-1 generally) and kids' shows (probably 1-to-1, but 80% kids).

That's a fair point. I'm probably thinking a little "glass half empty."

The female pie is about fourteen minutes in.
posts like yours are my favorite thing about the UMD. i am always on the lookout for lost mainstream wam.
As Rich mentioned, the holy grail of lost Steve Allen show pie scenes is the one Hurley Coward documented where Steve pies several Playboy bunnies......that one has still to be found. As I recall Hurley said he wrote a letter to Mr Allen in the 1990's to enquire about that show, and Mr Allen replied to Hurley to say that even he did not have that show in his archives and it was a lost or recycled mastertape.
I know people will accuse me of post-hoc rationalization or something like that, but, I'll bet that Steve Allen Playboy bunny pieing either wasn't very good (weak shaving cream), or, it never really existed.
Does anyone have any memory of seeing it?
I have never seen the Steve Allen show, so I would not know. It was before my birth.
Jane Meadows was super beautiful...and she's particularly hot in the "wench dress"...never knew she ever took a pie on Steve's show...great find, thanks!
The Groucho impersonator was Dayton Allen, another sidekick.
Actually Jayne Meadows took a pie on Allens's last show, the "Meetings of the Minds."
Say what you will, but he discovered or promoted Gene Rayborn, Steve and Edie, Andy Williams, Don Knotts, Tom Poston, Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Tim Conway, Lenny Bruce (because Hope was afraid to have him one, as much as he was the comics' comic) and any number of jazz musicians, including Billie Holiday.
