According to the Gov, they expect mid-June to be the peak, so starting from March, the UK is looking at Sept before life returns to normal. June would be the peak of the problem. That said, who knows how it will play out. We could have hot weather, and we find the virus dies back of its own accord. My advice, make plans but don't cast them in stone.

I am not trying to give any advice here but I will try to continually share what's happening in my homecountry. As I wrote yesterday we are on a path to complete lockdown.
The austrian government does this by a step-by-step approach. Each day the measures are tightened. My assumption is that this is purposefully done in that way in order to prevent panic buying and people getting used to drastic limitations of their every day life. People need som time to adapt, to discuss, to assess. This won't happen within one day.
Starting tomorrow of tomorrow we basically have a nationwide curfue with few exceptions.
But we already started limiting social contacts simply by informing people and shutting down public events for a few days now.
Again so that you have a better idea why it might make sense to try to limit the spread. We had two cases already where doctors got infected and returned to work before they had symptoms. After showing symptoms and getting tested positive, as a consequence in both cases roughly 40 hospital personell (doctors, nurses) had to be quarantined. While those hospitals remain operational, it shows how quickly a health system can be tipped off the balance.
Here's our overall cases ... trajectory still goes up steeply.
But ... (maybe because the measures we started this week might already show some benefit)
new cases did not continue to shoot up, but rather had a more moderate rise from 13th to 14th. Forget the number for March 15th, as the day is not done yet. Take those numbers with a grain of salt for now.

Americans have three alert levels, the first is "Uh-uh, nope, that's not true" and after they get caught, it's "It's not my fault, it's everybody else's fault". The only other level is "Burn down the city" which is used for everything from a team winning a game to police killing unarmed, innocent civilians.

My uni's been on strike for a month and now classes are permanently cancelled so not only have I had fuck all to do for a while, now I've got fuck all to do for even longer. It's no wonder people are still going out here in Britain cos there really is fuck all to do seemingly except go out and get pissed (getting shitfaced in self isolation isn't to enticing the 3rd time around).
Think us and the yanks have once again put ourselves over by dealing with it in the worst possible way. Anxiety driven end times vibe all around the household now (me mams cancelled sunday dinner and my granddads binned all the newspapers so panic stations are through the roof).
Despite this rant I do have a point. Try and support some mutual aid stuff in these times where cunts are stockpiling like kulaks. If the handling of stuff is as bad as it seems then a lot of people could struggle with this shit. Would encourage solidarity now more than ever before the fucking balloon goes up and we're all in Fallout.

8 years in the grocery industry and feel your pain and some as I do work during the day thankfully I work Deli and not center store but it's still insane.
Wrote this Saturday for another forum but it's relevant here to. Ok so this is going to be a bit of a lengthy post but I wanted to give a different perspective on things.
I have about a decade of experience in the grocery industry and not the cashier level experience but a long ranging experience starting from working my way up from front end through several different departments and am currently an assistant department manger. First off no one that I know in the industry has seen anything remotely like this we have all worked everything from blizzards, to hurricanes, to extended power outages and none of those has come close to this madness. That said there really are no actual shortages right now just temporally low to out of stocks ate stores. I know that might seem false to many of you but it's true we are bringing more stuff in every day even TP which was out came in after our distribution team managed to get a rush delivery from the manufacture after sending out every last roll in the local warehouse. So please for the love of god slow down and don't take more then what you need cause we are going to keep bringing more in and you will be able to get it the next day or the day after that.
The next thing is please bring a long some patients and understanding when you go to the stores. Understand that the employees that are there are doing their very best and to be blunt are in many cases working a lot of extra hours in an environment that is actually what every one is saying to avoid right now. Ie lots of crowds and lots of person to person contact. When I worked for Farm Fresh Ron Dennis who was the president of the company for many many years use to say during major weather event remember you guys are a form of first responders it's our job to get the water, food and other stuff that people need to them. Which of course doesn't mean that every employee that you meet is going to see it that way but believe me there are a lot of us out there that do. It's not uncommon for at least on the associate level for us to say something like sorry we don't have TP but food lion down the road had some earlier cause at times like this we really do want you to get what you need even if it's not from us but from someone else. I have even personally called store from other companies to try and help some one get stuff in the past. It's also a daily practice for us to pull from other stores in our own company to spread out what we have this is often done by someone getting in their personal car and using their own gas to go get it. Yes their is a away to get reimbursed but it's complicated and usually takes a while so often times people don't bother unless it's a major trip. This again goes back to be patient and understanding with us during these times we are doing the best that we can.
Please act in a respectful polite and rational way when you go shopping. Here are just a few examples of things that I seen in the last few day that disgust me. We had a customer that walked through clearly marked staff only doors to our back room area and attempted to take our store supplies of hand sanitizer, and other cleaning products and stood there insisting that we had to give them to him since there was nothing on the shelf for him to buy. That continued up to the point that the MOD had to threaten to call the police to get him to leave those supplies are kept under lock and key now. I personally been cursed out at least three times for things that I have not control over. I had a customer demand that I give him stuff from the non extant supply of stuff that we keep in the back for employees to purchase. And the list goes on and all while having already worked 42 hours on a pay week that doesn't end till Tuesday. But the one thing that sticks out to me is there was one lady that stopped and said thank you all for being here and keeping things going it can't be easy on you. That one little pause and acknowledgement erases so much of the crap and ugliness so please just take that one moment to stop and be that ray of light.

Meanwhile I just found out that PA is closing all the state stores...at least in the affected counties, which are the only hubs of civilization in the entire godforsaken state. For the vast majority of you who aren't from around here this means NO hard alcohol. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in it's infinite wisdom took a stranglehold on the sale of any and all wine and hard alcohol in the form of "state stores" since the end of prohibition in 1933. Beer got a weird pass and was allowed to be sold at beverage distributors (which strangely enough all have to look like airplane hangers...it's a rule I guess).
Only since 2017 did our governor manage to get a law passed that allows certain grocery stores to sell beer and wine, which of course have all been ransacked.
Did I mention they closed all the bars until further notice too...

My SARS-CoV-2 personal impact story:
I have (or had) a major necessary triple arthrodesis on my foot that I badly need scheduled for Monday March 23 that will almost certainly (still awaiting final word from doctor) be postponed due to this virus.
My best friend of 26 years died suddenly on Sunday morning from a bowel eruption.
At least he didn't die from diabetes (like we were sure he would) or cancer or heart disease (less likely but still a possibility with his terrible eating habits) or from the coronavirus.
I don't know when his funeral will be. Moreover, now I wonder if there will even BE a funeral:
or, if there is, how many people would they allow into the funeral service at one time?
He was a beloved fellow, so there IS a high chance that 100 people would show up,
like 100 people showed up to my father's funeral.
As much as I would REALLY REALLY love to give a big grand speech in my deceased friend's honor, I cannot deny that funerals are for the living, not the dead. So, it's REALLY not a necessity like delivering food & supplies as all the wonderful heroic (and often underpaid & horribly mistreated -- I'm looking at you, Amazon) retail employees do for us.
My delayed surgery is my biggest personal impact. The second is that our gated adult community closed the clubhouse through at least March 31. Just means I can't shower THERE: use THEIR hot water
But, frankly, I am SO grateful to have gotten all my academic degrees long behind me. I REALLY feel bad for students & academics having their educational schedules put on indefinite hold. And of course SUPER grateful that I live off social security disability & don't have a job I have to go to.
So I am productively using this time to wank off to WAM videos (maybe even buy a few more?) & work on my math research.

This climate is something never before seen on the stock market, there is literally free money floating out there just waiting for traders with a high Personal Risk Tolerance to scoop up. So many overleveraged overvalued stonks going to get shit on in the bear market.

I know here in my home State of Maryland, the majority of the Coronavirus cases have been in three of the most populous counties in the state, Baltimore County, Montgomery County and the County I live in, Prince George's County and at least 1 person in each of the counties I mentioned has unfortunately passed away from the virus. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan asked all non-essential businesses Statewide to close indefinitely until further notice and there will be very few places in the state that will remain open for the essentials. I will take heed to what our State Government has said and not go out unless I necessarily have to.

1. As a keyworker, it's incredibly stressful to be out. You now view people with 100% thought that they have the virus. You try to keep busy at work , safe in the knowledge that like the early days of WW2, this is almost the phoney bit. I spent yesterday preparing highway signs for the testing hubs and for the as yet not announced temporary morgue for my City.
2. As soon as "work from home" was announced the bosses disappeared. However their email last Friday, saying it was unacceptable for staff who had to come to work to do nothing was not acceptable.
Come the end of this, the world will be a different place. Of that I'm certain.

I am not trying to give any advice here but I will try to continually share what's happening in my homecountry. As I wrote yesterday we are on a path to complete lockdown.
The austrian government does this by a step-by-step approach. Each day the measures are tightened. My assumption is that this is purposefully done in that way in order to prevent panic buying and people getting used to drastic limitations of their every day life. People need som time to adapt, to discuss, to assess. This won't happen within one day.

it has been 19 days since my last update from Austria. Maybe some are interested how things worked out so far. Back then the lockdown basically started and case numbers were still shooting up exponentially. It has been tough on everybody so far. Healthcare workers, families, the whole economy. However, we can see the measures start working and the number of cases are going down. People are and have been widely disciplined, everyone tries to make the best out of the situation. Out measures have gotten a bit stricter this week with people being mandated to wear masks when they go shopping in a supermarket. Apart from that we are still allowed to go outside but not gather wit anyone not belonging to your family or who you don't live with.
So it looks like thos drastic measures make sense. Stay at home, when possible, avoid gatherings, try not to be a burdon to the stressed healthcare system by doing high-risk activities. I am afraid though that - at least in the US - the measures have been enacted too late, so I fear that the whole healthcare system will soon be overwhelmed. Remember, it took us almost two weeks to turn the corner and we are far from it being over. Within those two weeks people needed some time to adapt to those measures. There was a learning curve. People start wearing masks now when they shop groceries. This is accepted now. Masks are handed out when you enter the supermarket. There's still a shortage but we amped up mask production nationally. WE still expect theses measurs to go on til after easter, then being lifted gradually. Travel abroad within europe will still be prohibited till summer for sure.

Yes its quieter than normal. But the amount of vehicles with bikes on the back heading up to the National Park is unbelievable.
