However, I think (therefore I believe) that the 'classy' distinction is 'real' (culturally) insofar as it reflects an old socio-economic bias...like the terms 'low-brow' and 'high-brow' (comedy)...low-brow was generally anything involving physical sight gags or humor (knock-about, etc.), therefore 'easy' and 'cheap'...and high-brow involving, usually, dialogue, story, and better production, therefore harder to make/higher quality.

Of course, when you are talking about raw slapstick (Stooges) or 'zanny' (Marx Bros.) comedy...the difference is kind of silly (Stooges ventured into zaniness, at times, and The Marx Bros sometimes into slapstick).

I think the only 'real' distinction (in my mind) is 'artistic' (potentially pretentious, and longer, but prettier) verses less artistic ('brut' [mediocre/sub-par lighting, camera work, etc.] but gets to the main action fast).

There is am important distinction here: As pretentious as some may think 'artistic' wam to be (e.g., Foxy WAM, WAM Photography)...the difference is an additional level of appeal (an aesthetic level), which the viewer enjoys (even requires) above and beyond the purely prurient...a desire to appreciate the textures, colors, enhancing details, and formal presentation, objectively, as it were (and this combination/connection is 'wired' into our brains).

Quite simply: a more aesthetically-focused image is a 'better' image.

Obviously, it's not an entirely 'either/or' thing...Different consumers with different 'acceptable minimums'...and many for-profit producers have learned that there is a clear commercial benefit to setting up good lighting, wardrobe, make-up, quality camera tech, and shooting from more than one camera angle. These producers learned to do this from watching the work of a few pro 'pioneers' in wam production (MK, you are one of these pioneers; your stuff stood out from the amateur stuff by a mile).

Sometimes it's just a matter of how much money one wishes to spend on the video (oh, wait, that gets us back to 'classy'). But there is also skill and well-honed craft involved...

But to the point: 'aesthetics' is a real thing (and a whole branch of philosophy...snooze, I know)...and, speaking only for myself...a minimum aesthetic standard was/is necessary for me to make a video, to buy a video, and even to find the video erotically stimulating.
