When I was a kid, I remember a piefight in a Richard Pryor movie called "The Toy". However, it's been 30 years since I saw it,so I don't know if it stands the test of time.

I remember that! It was "decent". It would have been very good if they hadn't done the quick cut-aways. Iirc, the one lady was Theresa Ganzel, who was very hot! But they cut in just as the pie was being released, and cut away 2 seconds later. You hardly saw it hit. Plus, she was standing sideways, so we just got a (quick) profile shot, not a nice face shot. The other lady got a pretty good one, too, but the same thing.
There was a short interview with Theresa Ganzel after the pie hit, that I remember seeing. I don't know if it was from something like "Entertainment Tonight", or what. But she was standing there, looking really hot, with a pile of pie on her face (and facing the camera). The interviewer (off-screen) asked her something like, "Have you ever done an interview with pie on your face before?", and she laughed and answered, "I thought it would HELP!" To me, it was one of the hottest moments I had ever seen!
I've been wanting to get the DVD and see if that might be in the "bonus" stuff. But I don't know if it's worth it on the *chance* that it might be in there someplace. But of course, with the DVD, you can probably wide-angle the scene in the movie with the pies, and/or do close-ups, and slow it down, and it might be seen better. I don't know for sure on that.
I know that when I got the DVD of "The Great Race", I was amazed that in a part of the pie fight where Natalie is at the edge of the screen (O.k., so I didn't have a wide-screen TV at the time.) I could pan over that way, and do close-up, and see every spatter of cream!
As I recently mentioned in Messy Forum -- the blonde girl who gets the guacamole dip (or whatever it is - it's green) bowl splattered onto her in TEEN WOLF, TOO is arguably the only redeeming aspect of that film.
And I know you said "movies", but it hasn't been talked about on here in a while, that i've seen -- TV-wise, the "Brady Bunch" slapstick scene when they go to Hollywood.
I apologise for being so obvious (in case you were hoping for more obscure films to come up) but for me, Ann-Margret in 'Tommy' is pretty much unbeatable. There was the added bonus, certainly for me, of seeing her get her hair wet later in the film as well.
Also an honourable mention for Kathleen Turner's mudslide scene in 'Romancing The Stone'.
If you're not familiar with the Laurel & Hardy shorts, there are several great ones for mess!
The "biggie" is "Battle of the Century". It has what was the big screen's largest pie fight (at the time). Unfortunately, a lot of the movie, and some of the pie fight has been lost through damage and deterioration. But it is still fantastic to watch! "The Hoosegow" has a nice sticky, mushy rice scene with 2 lovely ladies. There are several others that the titles of the movies escape me. One has the boys as escaped prisoners, who accidently white-wash a lady's bum and the back of her dress. Another has a lady (at a house being worked on) falling into a tub of "cement" (iirc) or white-wash. Then one has the boys as sailors, taking ladies out in a rowboat, which ends up sinking and everyone getting soaked (I know, wetlook, not mess). And there are several others.
