I found this completely out of the blue- The David Essex Show (1977).

Twiggy is pied at the end of the number (without clown make-up).

It is actually a pretty long aftermath, as TV pieings go.

Thanks for the find. I think I spotted this a year or so back but forgot about it. Part of that is the pie itself, and also Twiggy never being a "get" for me personally.

I'd love for the community to hopefully find some more pieings from variety shows, especially in the 70s when pies were rampant, at least in America. There's probably several good clips out there that no one has found because they're uploaded within the context of a song-and-dance number, or something similar.

Example: Based on a description, I tracked down a clip from Mary Tyler Moore's short-lived variety show. Unfortunately, it was an older male celeb, but he got pretty much destroyed with pies in the context of a song.... Hell, it might've been "Send In The Clowns" again! So they're out there.

Given your description, it was the series regular Dick Shawn (I doubt James Hamilton).

Could there be underground trading of never-shown episodes and that's what you saw?

Yeah, it was Dick Shawn. Just assumed he was someone semi-famous in 1978. And it WAS "Send In The Clowns"! No original ideas left by the end of the 70s.

Looks like all 11 episodes are up on YouTube, though I didn't have the patience to see if there were any other messy bits in them. This is the episode I found, Dick gets nailed around 39:00 for those who care. (WAY better than Twiggy.)

There's also incredibly young David Letterman and Michael Keaton too, which is a trip.

The ONLY 2 things I know or have ever seen Dick Shawn in
was "The Producers", playing a character playing Adolf Hitler,
and the name of that character is, according to the IMDB,
L.S.D. - Lorenzo St. DuBois, which I never knew -
and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"
and he is outrageously hilarious in both.

Dick Shawn was an incredibly funny guy.

He died during of his concerts: he had a "grabber" and collapsed. But no one thought to get help until it was too late. You see, it was his "bit."
