"To All Producers--Filenames and Clip Titles"

Please, take what I'm saying to heart as a customer. PLEASE make your filenames and clip titles MATCH.
It doesn't take much effort on your part to do that and makes it so much easier for customers to find what we bought in our folders on our computers or usb sticks so much easier. I literally just bought a clip again by mistake (swearing I had seen it and I just couldn't find it). Turns out the clip title was not related in any way to the clip's title in the store and since the store is closing I can't exactly spend days searching for it.
Then once I bought the clip on vidown I could see the filename of the download file and instantly remembered seeing it in the folder.
Vidown could certainly display the filenames at the very least to make this a much smaller issue too. The producer actually responded that I should have been able to see the photos before buying...which I could but since I couldn't FIND THE FILE because of his naming being wonky it certainly didn't matter because I couldn't confirm that I had it.
So please, PLEASE consider actually naming your clips the title of the scenes or even including a model's name when it's relevant (like if you have 5 scenes that are all the same title but just a different model in each). It's frustrating on the customer's side and I'm sure it's frustrating on your ends dealing with kinda thing.

I 100% agree with you. The file names that drive me nuts are the ones that are just dates, or a random alpha numeric string that only means something to the producer. I think that if it is a producer that only films one model that something very loose like black dress or slimed cheerleader works great. I keep all my clips sorted by producer so it makes some of this easy. When you have multiple models that you work with, I like what Messygirl and Jayce do where the models names are in the file already and then a few words that describe the clip. For example, one of Jayce's that came to mind is called "Dixie and Jayce tit for tat dresses".

I have all mine sorted into folders like that too but this guy I've bought quite a few from. So it was easy to overlook it and "search" functions were useless when the name of the clip isn't the same and lacks any model name in it too.

Must admit I agree that random filenaming is very far from idea. But to an extent you can mitigate it by organising how you save your collection.
I have a /wam folder.
Under that I have separtate folders for every producer, for for example:
/wam/messy married couple
Every time I buy a scene, I create a folder named for the scene:
/wam/messy married couple/Gunge Salon
The I save all files related to that scene in that folder:
/wam/messy married couple/Gunge Salon/mmc-gunge_salon.mp4
(in that case there's just the one file but sometimes there will be multiples, different camera angles, or videos and zip files of stills, etc)
Means I can always get a list of what scenes I have by looking in the producer's folder.
I have a /wam folder.
Under that I have separtate folders for every producer, for for example:
/wam/messy married couple
Every time I buy a scene, I create a folder named for the scene:
/wam/messy married couple/Gunge Salon
The I save all files related to that scene in that folder:
/wam/messy married couple/Gunge Salon/mmc-gunge_salon.mp4

Thank you for doing this. Episode numbers also make it really easy to recommend scenes and find recommended scenes when they are referenced.
If I am looking at a file in my collection named "img_1234.mp4" with no edit for a title of a scene, I cannot recommend it using the filename or file itself.

When I first started a UMD Store, I got so excited at the ability to do "long" titles that I got way too cute..... So the Breana scenes would be "Breana Goes Bananas!" or "Breana Makes A New Friend," instead of SS172Scene1 like back on Vidown.
I guess it was good for sales, but for the life of me I don't know what scene it is when I get an alert that one of these sells! I really need to just modify the titles at some point. (The filenames didn't change though, so those who are buying the clips won't notice a difference.)

This does not help if you are like me and already have a huge collection with the original names.

The way we do our scenes is somewhat losely based on how Rob Blaine used to do it back in the days of 8.3 MSDOS filenames, though expended now.
Every scene has an identifcation number, which is shown front and centre on our websites and download stores. They start with "gm-" (which once stood for Gunge Master), then there a "series number", then a letter that identifies the scene type, and then a serial number for the scene itself.
So:
gm-4m035 is a series-4 mud scene, and is number 035 in that series.
This is it's page on Langstonedale: https://langstonedale.com/?set=gm-4m035
And when it goes live on UMD (in July) it has "Product ID: gm-4m035" in the data-panel near the top of the download details, along with price, etc. So it can be searched for by the id number.
Inside the download, the files are named:

gm-4m035-v2-maude-violet-vixen-tight-river-hb.mp4 (wash-off in the river)

Are we serious right now? It hasn't been 24 hours and you're blowing my shit up on here? First of all I asked you if you made the purchase on vidown or here? So I can see the receipt which I never got an email from vidown about the purchase. You can't access vidown through iPhone. I wasn't at my laptop so nothing I could have done at the moment. If you make purchases on vidown with the same email it tells you if you have purchased the video before. I have over 300 videos in my collection that I purchased and I know what's in my collection, and typically rename the files so I know. I've never had this issue in 8 years. I'm sorry you bought a video twice. You haven't even gave me a chance to look into it further. Especially shocking, giving that you message me about every little thing. If this is how you want to handle it, it's your decision.

It's a pervasive issue within the community where producers don't have a set way they name clips and things end up with wonky names. I've seen it from a bunch of producers, especially when you can see the filenames on the UMD just by clicking on a clip.
I've been around and buying stuff for a very long time, like 20 years now. It's not a new problem. The incident with you just spurred me to address the whole situation publicly.
Do something about it? Maybe it's just b/c typed out stuff doesn't convey tone but it didn't seem like you wanted to do anything at all. I wasn't trying to address this with you or handle that here. This thread is about a larger issue that does need to be addressed as numerous producers make up names on the fly instead of having some kind of logical naming pattern they follow. We had a discussion in private about the issue and you saw no fault in how you named things. In fact you specifically called out Messygirl and Slapstick Stuff as being bad at naming in the PM's, which is wild b/c they have solid store naming routines. But I left your name out of THIS thread and conversation b/c the issue is about more than this transaction, it's about the problem at large. Still more than willing to talk to you in private about our specific issue.

Bro, calm down. As I stated, this is about a larger issue and the purchase from just kinda finalized it. If nobody ever mentions a problem, then very few fix it on their own or even contemplate that whatever method they've been using might not be great. It's as simple as that.
You did not indicate anything in your messages about wanting to do anything either, so don't come in here acting like that please. I spent plenty with you over the years, so acting like this towards a customer is not a good look man. Take a breather, think it over. Swap places and think about how you'd feel?

Most of my stores use the Vidown catalog number as the file name, which makes them simple to identify. Just open the catalog and look up the numbers. My scenes are not available anywhere else, so it doesn't cause any confusion.
typically? When I edit a video, I have not come up with a name for it yet.
so? my videos are named by what they are. For example: NIKKOMELPBANDCHOCOLATE60FPS10000-so I can remember what frame rate I used and bit rate so? If for some reason I have to edit it again or change something and for some reason cant find the raw version.

so? my videos are named by what they are. For example: NIKKOMELPBANDCHOCOLATE60FPS10000-so I can remember what frame rate I used and bit rate so? If for some reason I have to edit it again or change something and for some reason cant find the raw version.

I am not blaming this thread for creating tons of extra organizational work for me. (No, that's my own sad anal tendencies....)
BUT I have started renaming and re-organizing all my UMD clips so they're a bit more uniform now. For example, all the Breana clips now start with the volume & scene number so you know exactly where it lands. (Like SS155 Scene 2: Bre & Jessy & All The Messy!)
And the final edit is now the "main scene" and the various angles are "alternates." I've been doing that recently but the earlier clips would just have, say, the random wide angle as the "main" which seems a bit confusing.

So I'm new to the producer portion of all this but I honestly didn't realize until like a week ago that our videos show up as the original title we give the file. It makes sense but I had a mini heart attack and had to go back and make sure I didnt name something ridiculous. I had figured it took on the name we put for the official release. So it may be fair to say that most of us don't realize that UMD doesn't take over the name and we are in control of that if that makes sense

This issue here is that won't help you compare the store file name with what you named it to see if you already bought it.
I've also bought existing content more than once too, and usually it's been from producers that just have metric F TONS of stuff, so one file somewhere might have another file name elsewhere.
I've also bought stuff (outside of UMD and not always WAM) where producers just basically recycled content and renamed it different things, changed model names etc.
This is frankly a really good discussion to have, and I'm honestly surprised it hasn't come up before that I can remember.

I'm a big fan of renaming things with windows file explorer in mind. First is producer, then scene number, then scene title, if part of a series which one, and when applicable model name. That way if I'm looking for something specific, it's easy to find when I feel lazy. Underscore is your best friend. It does lead to some creative shortening if I need to get the character count down.

That was the first one that got me thinking about all this. It would be like Slapstick Stuff remastering vol 1 and calling it volume 300 or whatever volume he's up to when someone reads this in the future haha! Gratz on the huge success man!

For that matter, there's no real reason anymore to EVER pull content out of your store, beyond the obvious one. (AKA the model specifically asks you to, due to a change in her life/job/etc) I've been around long enough to remember where server space was a real issue, and my monthly fees to Vidown got higher as I added more and more scenes.... But that was almost 15 years ago! Server space is comparatively cheap now, and no one's in a position where their store can "only" hold 1TB or whatever, so they have to rotate low-selling clips to make room.
Is it a streaming thing? Do some producers feel like they need to rotate clips in and out of their stores to keep customers subscribing? (Genuinely asking! I don't know...)

Not sure on space concerns, but in some cases it definitely feels underhanded. Some producers do seem to do it to rotate stock and increase demand by artificially limiting supply, like a famous company with a famous rodent mascot and said company's "vault."
I've also seen producers rotate in limited time stock that they "hide" in the back pages of their store. Not sure if there's a legitimate reason to do that.

I'm sure this is not directed at small producers like me and meant for the bigger ones who do it but I will and have pulled content out of my store. It's usually scenes that didn't sell well and I feel maybe weren't my best work for one reason or another. Now with that said, I have no intention of ever reselling them or ever putting them back up in the store.
Regarding local storage, I do the same thing as other people (one sub-folder per producer). However, if there are a lot of clips then I'll also have an index. This could be a text file or a spreadsheet, but it basically has 3 columns:
* Filename
* Title (in store)
* My comments (if any)
E.g. I might have
natmess.mp4, "Natasha gets messy", "Foam pies"
* Filename
* Title (in store)
