Jayce, fair point on everything here. And totally agreed that we shouldn't use classy as positive with unclassy as a negative, because then we start degrading folks.

My only thought is that sometimes we might just say classy when we mean something is restrained or tamer, like "Keep it classy, folks," meaning to keep things under control and PG.

Now, as a fetish? And on a fetish site? Yeah, it's weird to say that we need to keep it PG. I'm Ace so it's odd to think of this porn as being more "restrained" than that porn.

Not a term I've ever used, to me it sounds like a throwback to the way the previous generation (and I'm Gen-X) decsribed things.

There was a time when at least in the UK there were two distinct "levels" of porn. On the one hand you had what was in magazines like Playboy and Penthouse, which was high quality photography, done by photographers who were probably formally trained and understood all the details of model photography, interplay of light on skin, how to light a subject to create different visual effects - basically photographic art that just happened to feature naked subjects. Then there were the much more down-market (and cheaper) magazines which were all about closeups of genitals or breasts, sold to guys who probably never got to see such detail anywhere else.

The more upmarket photography was sometimes referred to as "classy", seen as more highbrow than just "tits and bits". But any such division has lost all meaning now, the entire industry has changed beyond all recognition.

I'll admit I miss the days when you did fully-clothed scenes, but guessing the money is in the ones you do now, and I'd certainly never try and claim one style is "classier" than another, there's such an enormous range of styles and tastes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I think there's a division that pits "glamor erotica" (Rob Blaine's milieu), focusing on the beauty of the models connected to the sexual situation against shoots and videos that accentuate the porn itself or the exploring of a fetish. Video and photography production quality is more of a technical or aesthetic issue.

I'll also point out that a lot of presentations now seem highly-directed, even choreographed - calculated to bring out the most desired scenes toward the very end of a lot of buildup (thus justifying the price being asked).

I prefer the rarer videos where the subject just enjoys the situation and the effort. It's the closest you get to just doing it yourself. "Classy" is really porn without the porn - in other words, safe and often very much unreal.

But these friendless souls deserve our pity. It sucks to suck, and it sucks worse to not even know you suck.

As far as I'm concerned, every man or woman that takes up a camera, pie and a bucket of slop, for the love of the game, is one hell of a classy bastard.

Language is difficult and sometimes the right-sounding word can come across wrong and with unintended subtext. "Classy" isn't the word I would use, but I think I understand the intent:

Like it or not, the same subject matter can be presented in several different ways, some of which are more visually...ummm...flattering than others. It's not a matter of "classy" vs. "trashy" or "pornographic" vs. "not pornographic." Just how much work you are putting into all of the other things outside of your main subject matter to present it in its most flattering light. And yes, that attention to detail makes a big difference. It's why you'll pay one price point for a burger and fries packaged in a cardboard box served in a paper bag and a different price point for a burger and fries served on a plate with real silverware.

To say that wam is wam or none of that detail matters because it's all porn in the end is reductive and dismissive of those who do put in the effort to make their work look a certain way. Everyone's work can't look the same and really, nobody should want their work to look the same as everyone else. People want to emphasize different looks and presentations based on their personal preferences and that's great. Maybe we should avoid using loaded terms like "classy," but not everyone has the vocabulary of an art history major. And at the end of the day, there will always be differences between Producer A, Producer B, and Producer C. And we need to acknowledges those differences some way to get what we want.

But most importantly, whatever language we're using, it's crucial to remember that the language only refers to the images on screen, not the value of the person making those images.

I think you are hitting the nail right on the head. I don't understand out of all the adjectives someone could use why they use classy. It is actually a strange thing to use. When I have heard it used by my dad it usually means someone that is "better" than someone else. It is a pretty degrading compliment word. Maybe it is just how much I don't like that word.

If there are things you don't like, don't look at it. There is a thread in the forum about someone getting gunged with dog food. There is nothing wrong with making those kind of videos. Not my cup of tea so I don't look at it. But to claim something that is not your cup of tea is somehow lesser quality than someone else is what this sounds like. The great thing about this fetish, there are all kinds of substances that can be used and can elicit the reactions the viewer is looking for. We have producers trying new things, you may see the words dog food and think that might not be for me. But then you see the pics and discover, you know what dog food might be for me. There is something about the response from the model that does something for me. That is awesome because you found more about your sexuality.

I do see people refer to certain types of WAM as "classy", but I don't think they mean it as a knock to anyone else. I could be misinterpreting it myself, but I picture 'classy' as being more focused on capturing the artistic aspect of WAM, rather than the porn side of it.

These screenshots are what I assume they're referring to when they say 'classy'. In a way, maybe art-focused? High quality video, high quality pictures being shot, beautiful model, visually appealing slime colors and poses, capturing the way slime interacts with light, the way colors mix and splatter, the way water spirals during a hairflip, etc.

also? I have a great respect for people really working hard to put out top quality stuff. I mean? I have some top quality stuff I worked so hard to do--and hired crews to help me do. i commented back to you in another post but just wanted to say: The reason why I stopped doing as much dressed stuff wasnt because of money or sales...
I came into wam for money and fell in love first time. After that? My store? (which has been completely fucked up because of ariel having me take down videos that I OWN, which left me without hundreds of videos so? seeing my progression is a little harder now)

I don't like the word classy or civil as I was told they have been historically used to keep people of color and or lower class people segregated as their cultures or mindsets are incorrect. I think it's just a "nicer" way of saying those savages and barbarians to rationalize lesser treatment if not worse things.
I do think there is a difference in WAM, I personally love the dirtiest messiest stuff for the most part, but def BACK in the day I preferred more tame wam. I don't think I've ever *personally* described my stuff as "classy WAM," although I suspect others have other the years. (Also PG WAM, vanilla WAM, "tame WAM" as the post above me just mentioned.) That does feel insulting.

Really, it's just a difference in degrees, and I feel like PG, R, and X-rated WAM would probably work much better and don't have the positive/negative connotations. (Also, let's be honest.... Folks can shoot hardcore WAM beautifully, with brilliant colors and great camera work. And folks can also make PG stuff that looks like it was shot on a potato in a SAW dungeon. Quality and explicitness are not linked in any way/shape/form.)

With models, they usually set their own "limits," which tend to be non-nude (bikini/lingerie), topless, nude, and explicit nude (spread-leg, etc). Using those categories, standard-def SlapstickStuff is non-nude.... while the last 12 HD years have found me dabbling in topless and nude (especially lately), but I don't see myself moving to explicit anytime soon.

though I would never characterize my work like that myself.
wam has so many facettes and niches, that I would have a hard time to generally view a production as either "classy" or "non-classy". For myself it's most important that I enjoy what I see. Usually I like high production value and commitment to detail, but sometimes it can be the lowest production quality or an old LQ tv capture that still can work because one aspect of a video or photo clicks for me.

As for my own productions I started with photography and always tried to produce what I like to see myself in terms of model-look, outfit and substance used. I don't try to cater a certain audience but rather hope that some out there share my taste and return as customers. It's not my preference to go into nudity or explicit content, but I would never regard content of that kind to be non-classy, it's just another aspect of our kink.

We had the same debate around 15 years ago in the Wetlook world, when one wetlook producer set up his own forum because he was not happy with the harder wetlook content and nudity on the main wetlook forum, so he decided to create a new forum with the by-line "classy wetlook" for non nude non porn wetlook. Classy was poor choice of words because he was basically he was trying to promote more "artistic wetlook".

Whether it be WAM or Wetlook, there is no distinction between what is classy or not classy. That is not the issue because it is the 'intent" to sexually arouse that is the same.
