Nearly half of the States have laws that require websites to verify the viewers age before displaying porn to protect minors from harmful content.
This is not just a couple obscure one-off laws in a few states, but a coordinated effort to get a similar age verification law in as many states as possible. There is also a federal bill proposed called SCREEN Act of 2025.

Here are some examples of state lawsuits against companies for failing to comply with age verification laws:
* State of Texas v. Aylo Global Entertainment (pornhub) for $1,600,000 + $10,000 per day
* State of Texas v. Hammy Media (xhamster) for $1,670,000 + $10,000 per day
* State of Texas v. Multi Media, LLC (chaturbate) for $1,780,000 + $10,000 per day
* State of Kansas v. SARJ LLC (13 porn sites) for $10,000 per website per day

There are 7 lawsuits, but the important one is FSC v. Texas. The argument is that these laws violate the first amendment right of free speech under strict scrutiny.
The SCOTUS heard the case on Jan. 15th 2025. The SCOTUS decided today on June 27th 2025 to uphold the Texas state law.
What are your opinions? Would you verify your age to view porn?
I think these laws will have a huge impact on the industry. More sites will start prompting you to verify your age or prompt you to register. The big porn sites will be easy targets for lawsuits. We now have a similar situation in the UK, except it's countrywide. I can't help thinking a lot of models are going to see their income drastically reduced over the next year or so. They won't just lose direct sales on clipsites, but also photoshoots/videoshoots from people who use clip revenues to pay the models. And they'll lose interactions/sales generated through social media.
We know the small minority of photography/videography people who have caused this situation in the UK, any sadly they're likely to be the ones who get off unscathed.

Tube sites mostly exist to harvest and sell user data, so they probably think getting facial scans and ID is excellent. I would not be surprised to learn that they turn out to have a stake in the data verification companies doing this, because someone is paying for those surely.
There may be ways round this for models and such like because if you're not showing anything pornographic on the public internet then it shouldn't be mandatory to censor it. I can imagine that there will develop certain dog-whistles which can be used to ply trade, and also plenty of black-market ways to distribute videos etc such as burner file-sharing.

When you enact laws like this, the good actors comply but the bad actors don't care. And you can't touch them with lawsuits since it's all oversees, counties like Russia which won't cooperate, run on private servers so you can't even go after the hosting companies. Owners names are hidden behind a series of shell companies.

Yeah I agree it could reduce income for models. It seems very common for OnlyFans creators to market on sites like Reddit since OF does not have previews. So this could reduce the number of new fans. The trend I am seeing these days is that OnlyFans creators use TikTok to make sexualized SFW videos to market themselves, and their NSFW content is often shared via Discord channel links to leaks in the comments. I saw some videos showing evidence of this, and it seems like a disturbing and unsafe porn distribution network.

Yeah, it costs money to verify a user. The tube sites also get money from ads, memberships, or video sales. I would not be surprised if your private data was sold too though. For example, the company claims in the privacy policy that they use you private data to improve their algorithm. So likely they store or sell your face scan to train models to improve their age recognition.
Or, they can just do a really bad job at handling your data like the Tea dating app did.
I bet some politicians in the US who are pushing these laws have some stakes in age verification companies and did some insider trading or investments.
Yeah, on your comment about there being a black-market, that is Discord hehe. Or pretty much any social or messaging site that can send images or videos. Even though they have age verification, there is plenty of sharing and distribution (from what I've seen watching youtube videos explaining it).

Yeah, the good actors loose out because they pay for age verification and loose traffic. The bad actors win and gain traffic to their sites which do require age verification. There are plenty of sites in other counties that will not comply, and it will be difficult to try and target them. People or companies that run a porn site in a State which has the law are probably under a greater threat due to how these laws are enforced through the justice system and being in the same jurisdiction.

Further to my previous comment, it's actually likely that the owner of the owner of the owner of the site hosting titillating content has been hustling for these laws because it helps their data harvesting. Most 'security' has a profit motive if you go a few steps down the chain.
Currently it's pretty easy to bypass censored sites using a VPN to a country where they aren't (Netherlands is my go-to, surprise surprise it's the nation of tall liberal cyclists to my rescue again), but this doesn't work if you actually want to buy a video. I can't believe that a lot of users don't already know this simple workaround, but it does increase the chance that the Orwellian government's next wheeze will be to try and ban VPNs, not that that would be particularly easy since private networks are necessary for all sorts of vanilla commerce.
What is also possible, and potentially more concerning if it drew in minors, is that we go back to 'under-the-counter' trade in p**n, or else sexting/using messaging apps to distribute it after getting customers via an uncensored 'shop window' on the open web. The major messaging apps have been very big on pushing privacy and would fight any attempt to censor them.

Or you just purchase a VPN and come in from another country. Law makers will not catch up to technology as long as they are old people. When young people who embrace technology and know about it because they have lived with it become law makers, we will have more common sense "protect the children" laws. I will start believing they are interested in protecting children when they go after religious organizations for the role they have played in sheltering abusers and helping them thrive.
