Hey all, been a while since I was on here actively. Introduced my girlfriend to the wonderful world of sploshing this weekend. We tried making our own pie crusts to use for throwing since the store bought graham cracker ones have kind have sharp pie tin edges. We wanted something that was strong enough to hold filling without a tin. Achieved that goal but they did not crumble on impact as much as I would have liked. The recipe we used was:

1 cup flour
1/3 cup shortening
1 tbsp salt
6 tbsp ice cold water

Anybody have another recipe they have had success with?? Thanks

Nice variety of pies! And a great quantity for her 1st time!

When you say "throwing", do you actually mean "throwing", or "smushing"? I'm partly just curious, but also, smushing can give you a little more control over how hard the hit is, and you can help to break up the crust.

But I do LOVE throwing, if she's up for it!

I've normally used the pre-made, bake them yourself kind. I leave them in the oven a little longer so they get a little brittle and that helps them break easier. The only thing I can think of for the made-from-scratch kind is to possibly roll the dough a little thinner. Also, if you beat/mix the dough too much if can get tough and that might keep it from breaking.

And yeah, I cringe everytime I see the graham cracker crusts in the tins with the edge of the tin folded over the edge of the crust. Those are sharp! When using that kind, I always fold the edge of the tin back and under. it gives a rounder, less sharp, edge and also lets the crust come out of the tin easier without leaving half of it crimped under the edge of the pan.

All in all, how did your girlfriend like it? Did she enjoy herself? Does she think she'll do it again? (It sounds like it, if your asking advice for the next time!)

Unfortunately, my pie throwing technique left something to be desired. Some of the pies were off target and others hit at strange angles but it still made a mess I would have liked the crusts to crumble more on impact though, hence this post. I'll put a pic below so you can see what I mean with the large pieces of crust after impact.

I have never made pie dough before so I probably did beat it too much. I was also worried that if we rolled the crust too thin, the weight of the filling would break it. A delicate balance I assume. We will have to do some more experimentation.

She took to messing better than I could have ever hoped! We ended up sploshing a few times over the course of the weekend. She even let me mess her in one of her Japanese Lolita costumes! She made a beautiful cake to use with that outfit. All in all, it was a really fun weekend!

She is up for doing it again, just a matter of finding the time and having enough money to do it. Part of the reason for making our own pies was to cut costs Hopefully get a few more chances to do it while the weather is warm. Thanks again!

What did you do with that cake? Its pretty amazing!

The cake served double duty. First her face was smooshed in it, then the remains were gathered up and placed on a chair for her to sit in (didn't get a good pic of the latter). Also included a pic of all the other messy supplies we used

Definitely! That's the only way to know for sure. And, of course, the only way to see if the pie crusts are breaking right is to throw them at your lovely wife and see what happens! :devil:

Thanks for the compliments, Norman! Two corrections though. First, Janet is my girlfriend, not my wife; who knows what the future holds though... And secondly, that is actually one of her Lolita costume wigs. It is a pretty realistic one though. The wig is part of the whole Lolita style along with things like the over the top cutesy dress and shoes as well as knee socks, tights and bloomers. Decided to keep the outfit authentic for the sploshing session. Go big or go home Here is a regular pic taken at the park, her real hair is much shorter. Thanks, CakeKid. We decided to have some fun with that outfit and made a little Vaudeville style comedy skit where she was a customer at a Sploshing tea room and I was the waiter. I actually pushed her face into the cake so there are only before and after pictures. I will try to pull a clip from the video we took for you though.

I love the pic! She's still cute, just shorter hair! :lovestruck: But yes, not only does the wig look realistic, but I really do love the Lolita outfit! That's a perfect dress for getting messy! Any chance we can get a view of the bloomers? A while back I had talked about loving seeing ladies in "Baby Doll" dresses (not the skimpy nighties, but real dresses). The Lolita outfit is the same idea, just a little more material!

No worries, Norman. She only wore a wig for the Lolita messing, she has her regular length hair in the other outfits we messed.

That dress is actually a somewhat amusing story. The Lolita dresses she has are actually custom made. She really does like that particular dress a lot so I was surprised she wanted to get messy in it. The dress is made of cotton so we both figured it would stain easy and be ruined. Since she was being such a good sport, I decided to surprise her by ordering an exact duplicate of it. I didn't tell her that before hand because I didn't want to change her reactions to the mess. The joke turned out to be on me because the dress actually washed cleaned! I spill something on one of my cotton t shirts and it is ruined forever, she gets covered in tea, cake, pies (including raspberry!), eggs, cake batter and green slime and the cotton dress washes clean; how the hell does that work!?!?!? Oh well, I guess that dress lives to mess another day...

Anyway, I'll pull out some bloomer shots for you. One thing I like about when she wheres those Lolita dresses is how you unintentionally catch a glimpse of the bloomers when she moves certain ways or bends over to pick something up. The bloomers themselves got filled with a pastry bag of Bavarian creme and took a few direct pie hits during this messy session. Unfortunately there are no pics since I was the one delivering that mess, just after shots. It was a lot of fun but a bit challenging to photo, video and act all at the same time. And on a related note, do you or anyone else reading this have a recommendation on a program to resize large volumes of pics? The file sizes are fairly huge from my camera and it is time consuming reducing/resizing each one individually in MS Paint. One person recommended a program called Photosizer, any other programs people are using and would recommend? As always, free is better since I'm a broke college student at the moment Thanks

Your ladyfriend is a real cutie, thanks for sharing. If you're on a Mac, the easiest way to batch-resize images is probably via sips on the command line ( http://lifehacker.com/5962420/batch-resize-images-quickly-in-the-os-x-terminal ), I presume there's some sort of equivalent for Windows.

The colors look a bit washed out from the original video, still working on that. I am using an older version of Pinnacle (version 14) to render the clips. My video camera shoots in .MTS (AVCHD video) which Pinnacle recognizes but it isn't an output option

Back to the original topic, I was going through some footage and found a perfect example of my pie crust problem. Had a poorly thrown pie where the crust came out almost intact! Excuse my choppy editing Also found a pic of another pie that didn't break apart well in the Lolita messing. And going back to Norman's earlier post, found some before and after pics of Janet getting dressed in the Lolita outfit where you can see her put the wig on

The key is carefulness. Buy the 2 packs from Walmart and bake them as per directions.

Let them cool, then flip then gingerly upside down. Just as gingerly flip them right side up, but outside of the original tin.

It will takes lots of practice, and even with practice, expect to lose a few crusts. It's really though up to you, once the filling is added to be able to determine the success you desire.

I'm far from a baker, but if making completely from scratch, I'd say use eggs in your favor. Eggs tend to help things stick together.
