We all have our preferences, and I'm not knocking those who don't mind it...but that said...for me the whole point is a beautiful girl getting her appearance messed up in a harmless, yet one of the most outlandish ways imaginable.
Case in point...Anglefan's and Slapstick Stuff's Carrie is one of the hottest and most sexy WAM models out there. But when she laughs harder than the person doing the pie-ing...it takes away all the appeal for me. Dont want to get into the psychology of it, and there is no right or wrong, just preferences. On the other hand, Anglefan's Amber and Slapstick stuff's Bree have EXACTLY the type of reactions I'm looking for: shock and/or surprise/and or anger and or humiliation.
Ken and Rich have both posted in the past that it is very difficult if not impossible to direct some models when it comes to reactions. I can understand that.
I guess I go back to most of the classic mainstream pie scenes: the Stooge hits, Marlo Thomas on "That Girl", and more recent ones like Alyssa Milano, Nikki Cox, the blonde on Hang Time, etc. they all have that reaction I'm loking for.
Same goes for self-pies...unless a well-acted "accident" they don't do it for me at all.
I think if you ask those with the opposite prefeence the same would be true. ie: if the girl acted outraged or shocked etc, it kills it for them. They want the girl to show the 'joy'/'fun' of being pied. Clearly these two povs are totally contradictory and porducers have to go one way or the other. the latter is easier as it is the (usually) model's reaction.
It's all good. Horses for courses. The market will decide and all that..
I took to commissioning customs, and then eventually making my own scenes to get what I was after. I try and create scenarios like old corny crackerjack or 3 stooges sketches etc because it gives the models a context to act outraged in.
Have to say Messy Jessie, Kitten, Jaycee, Jilly, Ariel and Maria (who was scary in her acted 'fury' ) have all done customs or work with me where they have proved more than able to give the type of reaction we prefer, so most good models should be able to, it would appear.
I think perhaps more people prefer the other side of the coin (that's all I can conclude given the preponderance of clips where the 'victim' finds it funny) but it's always nice to know I am not alone in this predilection.
Do you also prefer the pie-r to be laughing/gloating etc at their 'victim's' humiliation, or is that just me?
I think Pied Pinups does some great work. On some of them there is a laugh track following the pie. Obviously fake but for some reason, that does enhance it fr me. But an "accident" where the pie-er had a different intended victim for example, also works really well for me.
I'm actually on the other side of it... My favorite vids are wam virgins, bc I really like seeing the natural reaction to getting pied or slimed for the first time.
Even with the experienced models, it kills it for me when you can hear the director telling the girl how to act.

Agreed. But it is quite possible to brief the model from the mo you send the script, etc right up till the cameras roll. That's the direction I'm referring too. I agree that hearing the director is a mood killer for me.
I think if you have very specific tastes, I would recommend the edits from my store. Typically if it's a scripted scene or one where the model is supposed to act annoyed/upset, I'll cut out all the "goofing" and laughing, saving that for the Outtakes. There might also be a studio audience laughing at her predicament, depending.
The screen grabs I post have to give an accurate representation of the edited scene AND the unedited parts, though. And honestly... A shot of one or both models laughing (before or after pie) is WAY more appealing to most than the model looking bored/annoyed/uncomfortable. I've seen some producer pics where the model (still clean) looks like she's been interrogated in a holding cell for hours, and I just think, "If that's the HAPPIEST the model was during your shoot, I don't wanna see it..."
Also, just to prove that you can't please all the people ANY of the time around here... The model you pointed out that appeals most to you (Bree) doesn't sell close to what Carrie does. Same with Shelly, who does the slow burn as well as anyone I've ever shot. (The scene below actually WAS a very good seller, and yes she stayed in character the entire time!)
"the blonde on Hang Time, etc. they all have that reaction I'm loking for."
actually one of my favorite TV pies/cakings ever. i believe this is the one where it's almost like she has some in her mouth or whatever -- I love those when there's pie in the mouth, when the person is clearly like "I did not expect this OR at least expect it would be this MUCH". Her reaction was pretty excellent in the astonished/embarrassed category and loved that.
The guacamole-dipping in TEEN WOLF, TOO (of all things...side note: i've seen that movie way more times than i'd care to admit) is also up there in terms of open mouthed shock/disgust/splatter.
Julia Roberts is one of my first true crushes in jr high/high school and I tend to love a girl with a big laugh and smile. So i like when a girl is laughing, cracking up, etc.
BUT...I hear you. I guess what I'd say for me is, i just don't like the "shocked" etc./non-enthusiastic reaction when it seems REALLY mean, or the pie hit is REALLY hard.
There's a couple of things I've seen over the years where I wince (one of them a fairly well known producer, and I won't mention the name) -- the pie tin is really hard on their face/nose or something like that, where they actually go "OWWWWWWW" and I, personally, hate that. It makes it seem like the person had their arm twisted or really doesn't wanna be there and it's a downer.
I love when people share their thoughts on stuff like this, especially pies/slime. The "niche within a niche" always fascinates....

Completely agree..the reaction should be around the humiliation of being pied, not physical pain.
In rl I am a huge softie, and I actually called cut when filming the cake and paint fight when Maria's wonderfully enthusiastic painting of Jessie, and Jessie's pretend trying to avoid it, meant Jessie got paint really close to her eye. I called cut and the girls were like: "why did you cut?" and Jessie was 100% fine but the thought of anyone genuinely in discomfort would be a total mood killer for me
I am right with you on this!!! Nothing kills it for me more than if the model enjoys it, laughs, smiles etc. etc. And by the way...that girl on Teen Wolf too....can't tell you how many times I have watched that scene. Amazing. Hawmps also...thats the style we need more of around here. Not this laughing, same old routine BS. Just my thoughts and NOT directed at anyone in particular so don't get bent people. I love you all!!
Rich...thanks for your thoughts. I think it goes without saying that your work is beyond fantastic, and totally agree you're never going to please everyone as Wammers have some things in common and a lot of stuff not in common at all. Bree might not be representative of strong sales, I only used her as an example of great acting. Another one of your models who I bet DOES (or did) sell well is Toshia, who sells the reactions I like beautifully. I'm pretty sure I own every one of her scenes. And agreed, your final edited stuff is about as good as it gets.
Hope my comments are taken in the spirit of discussion and not a knock on any model, producer or WAM fan. A couple other mainstream scenes I love: pretty much all of the WWE stuff: Joy Giovanni, the Bella twins (despite horrible camera work and bad aim on the first pie) Hornswaggle's hit on a brunette whose name I cant remember, Stacy Keibler (bad camerawork again). The Sunny sheet caking and aftermath were fantastic.
the sheet-caking was great reaction, i think i have/first saw that on a Hurley Clip tape.
I do agree, I wish we did get more totally natural reactions -- i remember seeing a few in Pied Faces or some of the other "newbie/first time" sites or sets.
when it's not so late and brain is working better, i'll list a few more favorites i've enjoyed over the years -- "one and done"s or stuff from TV that worked great b/c of the reaction.
I think maybe the Idalys pieing on MTV or a couple of the Nickelodeon ones were great, the shocked reactions, the mouth hung open, etc. -- also with the added hands wiping off face, through hair to fling cream off, etc. -- love that stuff. I would imagine VERY tough to recreate/get "just right" without coaxing and so on.
I think that's probably part of the issue, many producers trying to recreate their favorite or customers' favorite classic iconic moments, but it's hard to nail it just right if you're going for spontaneity, an organic reaction.
Oddly, i feel like the bulk of producers' mess (the volume of it, the thickness of pies and so on) has gotten better over the years, but maybe not all of the reactions are as spontaneous, unplanned and so on.
I feel like there was a little bit more "what is this going to feel like?/be like?/taste like?", but i could simply be projecting and pontificating because of the very thesis on which this topic is based.
Although, more I think about it (and this probably isn't "news" to a lot of you), I guess that presents a paradox in WAM: we often complain about crappy coverage, barely any pie stuck to face, the "wrong kind" of slime, and so on when we see Real Life WAM happen at sporting events, charity events, backyard antics, but on the other hand, the reactions are of course usually 100% real.
That is what makes things like the "Hang Time" caking so great -- obviously an actress knows a pie/cake is coming, but on the other hand, i can't imagine they ran through scenes with real mess too many takes, so you're getting an actress giving a fairly real reaction, heightened of course because they're *supposed* to react disgusted, put out, angry. (The "Hang Time" one also works because, if i remember the situation correctly, the girl was already frustrated, angry, had been burned somehow before and then when the cake hits her she was all, "See? Something like this ALWAYS happens," and gets made and kind of storms off. It fired on all the right cylinders in terms of embarrassment, expectation vs. unexpected, humiliation.)
Messy Fun often had great reactions; like many, i remember "Ariel's Pie Shop" fondly, and i believe that video had some great aural reactions, "ughs" and so on; Rob B. knew what he was doing!
I like reactions indicative of erotic gratification...which, sadly, are rather rare...whilst I abhor reactions indicative of genuine distress. Different strokes etc.
