Just popping on for a bit of sympathy and understanding .
In my shoot yesterday with Belle and Patience I threw the best pie I have ever thrown..ever.
The pie was great..the hit and splatter were perfect..the coverage was amazing
I was so delighted. Even Patience and Belle were awestruck...both their reactions were perfect. the whole sequence was one of the best things I have ever done..and, for only the third time in 3 years filming, I had forgotten to hit record so it will never be seen aaaarrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I wanted to cry. I still can't stop thinking about it.
Attaching a pic of the aftermath after Patience had wiped her face..but why why why did it have to be that bit where I forgot to hit record.
Honestly this is hurting me more than the fact I am being made redundant from my job at the moment.... it was the kind of moment you go into filmmaking to get..and I fecked it up!
Has anyone else been in this situation? I need to know I am not alone
MessyCleo said: That sucks indeed!! I once forgot to clear the memory of the cam and it cut out after 2minutes. I didn't notice and a whole 15min session was lost... Bob
Oh No! So sorry to hear that Bob. We need to found a support group .
That's all bad! Sorry to hear that. I've def missed some pictures because I didn't aim it right and had some off angles when pouring slime cause I hold it w my hand. I have accidentally deleted my whole album of wam videos when my last gf made me delete her messy pictures... luckily was able to recover 50-70% of the videos
Usually I turn my work brain off when it comes to wam, but i'll give my two cents this time.
As a professional editor I deal with footage management all the time. Id be a rich man if I had a dollar for every time Ive heard a director say "I know we have that shot" ... no .. you dont. Your cameraperson wasn't recording that bit of gold you were seeking.
Some practical advice from someone who knows. Always back up your footage, and the Files you eventually make. Pocket drives just love to die when you least expect it.
My worst experience was almost deleting a clients master programme file. That would've been a $100,000 mistake ... nice save.

Idk what's worse. Being stupid and forgetting to check your gear or having the goods and then having to delete them... I would be heart-broken

I am so sorry to hear that luvs2pie. That is awful...30 % of your videos gone.
My ex-wife persuaded me to throw out lots of my VHSs (not just fetish but films I'd taped off the tv etc). I really regret that now. I had some amazing stuff that is all gone.
Btw..just to shout out a massive thanks for all the 'loves' you give for my stuff. It is really really appreciated. I can't speak for all producers but I know it really gives me a boost when someone takes the time to view and 'love' my pics etc..so thank-you
Know that feeling. I've a Chastity and Kitty scene in nurses uniforms which is priced with a 25% discount because having paused the video camera to reposition a heater (we were shooting in the depths of winter), I failed to restart it so that the very intimate covering of Kitty's front which already-covered Chastity did exists only in the stills - the video jumps from Kitty having her legs and bum covered to the two of them sitting on the table together covered in mess. Realising I'd messed up (pardon the pun) also made shooting the rest of the scene harder as I kept mentally kicking myself for the stupidity. I should have just left the camera running and edited the heater-moving out afterwards but I was trying to be clever and save editing work. I'm now very paranoid about making sure the video is running and I can see the red dot on the camera screen whenever it's running on the tripod.
We're all dreadfully human. Looking at the simply gorgeous ladies who you have worked with over the years (especially Kacie) I'm really surprised that this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. Thanks for all the joy you've brought.

This makes me feel MUCH better about having accidentally erased that topless mud wrestling video I shot with Charlize Theron back in her modeling days. Whoops!
Yep, done that a couple of times -- but most of the time it was not my fault, because often I was doing outdoor shoots in bright sunlight and the sun was so bright that I could not see the viewfinder clearly, so I could not tell if I was recording or not due to the glare in the monitor.
This is what I don't get.....how come they can invent an lcd screen for Kindle book readers so they can read a book on the beach in the glaring sun without any glare on the screen, yet camcorder manufacturers cannot invent an lcd monitor for a camcorder to you can film in bright sunlight on the beach. Last month I was filming a cheerleaders event on the beach in Daytona and I had to remember to check the record light every minute to make sure I was recording because the glare of the sun made it difficult to look at the viewfinder.

Well you can't expect them to Florida-proof everything, that'd be ridiculous.

Oh no!...it's so easy to do it. The camera was already running and in pressing to 'start' recording I accidentally paused it. It's so frustrating, and I'm sorry to hear it DM.

Thanks so much for the kind words. It's great to know that the scenes do bring joy to people and hearing things like that makes it all worth while. I do apologise to everyone for fucking that amazing moment up tho.
Jordana filmed this 30 minute movie for me a few years ago. It starred her, Cara, and Sky. For some reason, she films for 10 minutes, then stops the camera, discusses stuff, looks at the script again, etc. and then starts filming again.
At the 10 minute mark, she stopped filming, discussed whatever, and proceeded to act out the next 10 minutes and she forgot to hit PLAY. Or maybe she hit it twice and she therefore paused it. In those 10 unfilmed minutes, you miss her first pie to the face and the other girls getting more pies. So there is an awkward transition where we go from what you see in the first picture to what we see in the second.
I feel your pain That's why making WAM movies can be stressful! The process goes only in one direction. You can't just go back and do it again!
That's why I always have two cameras running and have the viewfinders turned towards the action. I always look back periodically to check before I throw a pie.
I've not missed anything per se but I've twice positioned the camera too high or low and that crucial thing is just out of frame. Plus, one time, the back up failed altogether.

As for failing to hit record, or accidental deletion, drive failure, or battery failures.
I think most of us have had those issues happen in the past, we've certainly lost a bit of media. The worst thing happened to us was when we shot our first ever episode of Top Gunge, it was our first ever studio shoot and we were clueless about lighting and white Ballance etc. The media was so over saturated, we couldn't rescue it, so we had to reshoot most of the episode. A very expensive mistake, about £3000 worth.
Thing is, we learn from our mistakes, it's called experience.
Still even now with 15 years of shoots and websites we still forget to hit record on tank cam every now and then. Or don't notice the smudge on the lense.
I feel your pain(s)....there's a reason that directors call "speed" or "roll camera" to their camera person/cinematographer...but if you are the director AND cameraperson...that's a problem...one solution (not always practical on a limited budget) is to NEVER turn the camera off, once on, until the shoot is done....another is to block the lens with something any time you do stop the camera (the idea being that the view-blocking object will prompt you to restart the camera)...
Mark: did UV filtered/ polarized sunglasses not work? One quick "mod" is to tape a cardboard 'flap' (cut to fit the VF) to the top or bottom (or both, using to flaps) of the viewfinder, that you can manually swing up over the viewfinder at the right angle to block the sun (tilting the viewfinder at an 'off' angle, at the same time, also helps
I once stopped the camera after filming a great close-up pie push on a cute model. She wanted to see the video afterwards (it was her first pie)...so, I rewond the tape to show her, then for some reason I had rewound it again, but didn't need to, and forgot to fast forward it past the stopping point....thus taping over the hit! Ouch.

Oh No! That's just awful. So sorry to hear that £3000 is unbelievable.
Yes..I totally get it happens to us all. I filmed a whole scene out of focus once and almost gave up filming..but you just carry on and gradually the memories are less painful.. It's all good. But I needed to share with everyone here as there's not many I can tell in rl who would understand...as non-wammers don't understand the frustration of missing a perfect hit!.

Look at it this way, the three of you got to experience a perfect moment in time. It will be emblazoned into your memory for years to come. So, it wasn't a waste, it just wasn't meant to share with the whole class.
We used them on our wetlook trip to Crete last week, very useful.
Yeah....I made up one of those monitor hoods myself. There are lots of Youtube videos that show you how you can make a home-made hood for a monitor by cutting up a Corn Flake box. They work OK for slow moving subjects such as a model you are directing. But I found them hard to use for fast moving subjects such as 40 cheerleaders running past you into the surf.....which is just like filming those UK charity swims at Tenby or Sunderland....rather chaotic and unpredictable and you never know which way to point the camera when there is too much going on all around you.
I am jealous of those pro cameras they use at Pro Golf matches with amazing zoom lens and how those cameramen are able to follow a little white ball as it moves thru the air.
When wetlook events are chaotic, such as they are at Songkran, then there comes a point where you have to abort looking thru the viewfinder or lcd monitor....and all you can do is "point and hope" that you captured some stuff.
I have a friend who works as a cameraman for ESPN Sports...and he operates robotic cameras on wired tracks that fly across the ice hockey arena....and everything he does is via a remote deck and joystick He has amazing skills at following a fast moving hockey puck....but then again....you don't have much choice because if you miss capturing a goal...you get fired and don't get hired again.
I'm not a producer, but I do have a story from my point of view as a consumer.
I'd built up a number of VHS tapes of TV gungings over the years, and one clip was of the (pretty famous for UK wammers) Myleene Klass gunging on L&K in the early 2000s. It sat quite safely on one tape for a couple of years, until I decided I wanted to wipe the item immediately before it. I don't remember now what it was or why I wanted it gone, but I did. So, I set that tape to record something else for a minute or two, and decided for maximum efficiency that I would nip to the loo for a quick pit-stop while the tape was wiping. I mean, that was only going to take me a minute, right?
Well, perhaps that's all it was, but Kipling was right in "If" as it proved an unforgiving minute indeed. I came back in the room, stopped the record and wound back, and was horrified to see that I'd underestimated how long my "quick" natural break was going to take me. Yes, Messy Myleene had been wiped from existence. Why didn't I look at the length of tape I wanted cleared and time it first? Why didn't I just STAY IN THE ROOM? (I don't think I was that desperate...) Why didn't I...?
Yes, I know it's on YT but it's not the same. The only good way to look at is this. My Holy Grail, and I suspect for a few others too, is the ultra-rare clip of Zoe Ball submerging in the Gunk Dunk in a shown-once-only trailer for GYOB when she was on CBBC in the mid-1990s. I never saw it, let alone recorded it, but my wiping of Myleene is the one thing that makes me feel a bit better that I don't have a copy of Zoe. I mean, can you imagine having that clip and losing it...? Chills me to the bone just thinking about it...
