"Movie theaters, how much longer you think they'll be around?"

I'm an avid movie fan. I absolutely LOVE movies. Depending on what's playing, I usually find myself going to the cinema at least once a week. Sometimes twice. Lately, every time I go there's hardly anyone at the theater. I go to a lot of premieres on Thursdays. Last night I went to see Novocaine, I feel like it's been advertised pretty well, and looked like a hell of a fun movie (it was) that would draw people in from the trailer. There were 3 other people in the entire theater with me. There was also a MAJOR bonus point offer incentive for seeing it opening weekend. The parking lot was nearly empty when I went in at 4:50, and nearly empty when I left at 7:00. Years ago I'd go to premieres on Thursday and the theaters were sometimes half full, sometimes totally full, it was never so barren in there. Hell, way back in the day the premieres were at MIDNIGHT and the theaters were still full, now the times are much more convenient, yet attendance is dwindling, I think the last time I was in a full theater was for Deadpool & Wolverine.
I think the threat of losing cinemas is a real thing. More people are streaming and claim they have the perfect set up at home...people are complaining about prices...everyone's calling every new movie that comes out "Woke" and refusing to go support them...I don't get any of that personally...
This makes me really sad. What's going to happen with movies? Are we going to start getting nothing but crumby quality straight to streaming movies because they don't have the budgets to make big pictures anymore? Some of them are good, don't get me wrong, but a lot of them have crappy effects and are totally cheesy...I don't mind low budget artsy serious movies that don't require huge budgets, but I also enjoy ESCAPING into crazy worlds with crazy characters that require big budget money for effects, costumes, and set designs...
Maybe it's the time of year? Maybe they do better on the weekends (I work weekends so I don't see them on fri-sun)? It seems like every time a movie come out, the first thing I see on social media is how bad it performed at the box office.
I don't get to catch EVERYTHING I'd like to at the theaters, and it is nice to be able to catch it on streaming when I don't, but I much prefer seeing it at the cinema. It's bigger, louder, and I don't have distractions all around me. If I'm at home sometimes it can take me a day to watch a movie, I keep getting distracted and doing other stuff...but if I go out to a movie? I'm totally invested. I've paid for my ticket, I've driven to the theater, I'm completely there for the sole purpose of watching the movie.
So anyways, what do ya'll think? Are movie theaters going to go the way of Blockbuster or are they going to stick around?

I think the problem is that Theatres have not changed. Show a movie with optional food. The problem is the price is increasing so much that folks no longer see it as fun but something they have to factor into a budget, while the theatre has done nothing new.
Without change, that model is not viable forever, especially as TVs are getting bigger and better, there is home screening and the films are coming out earlier on streaming platforms.
We have a local theatre that has quiz nights, a pub, speakers that come and talk about what they have created PLUS it shows arts film, indy films, repeats as well as the new films. By offering more, it makes the £10/ticket (and that's reduced through membership) seem worth it as it's more a vibe of a place and not just a machine to watch the latest snooze-fest.
People want to go to theatres, but not in the way they are, at the prices being charged. They will remain but have to move with the times.

I'd say movie theaters are dying a very slow death. At home streaming was a huge hit to them, especially after Covid. Being able to avoid the obnoxious crowds and still watch a new release is pretty great.
The other thing is, films are kind of a lost art these days. By that I mean, most movies are soulless cash grabs just meant to collect as much revenue as possible, with no artistic integrity or concern for the story, or message.

It really just doesn't seem worth it to shell out increasing prices for some mediocre slop that eats 2 hours of my life.

My theater did a total remodel several years ago. New bigger reclining seats, bigger screens in some of the theaters, and also now some of the seats move with the movie. A nice thing with the remodel too is that you can buy your tickets in advance and see what's available and pick your seats, unlike before where you'd show up, buy your tickets and walk in the theater and hope you'd be getting a good seat. I know not all theaters are like that, but it's a nice change, and I think it justifies the price change for tickets around here. I still don't think the price is that bad.
We also have a membership thing at my theater. You pay so much a year and you get a free ticket every month, and you get points every movie you see (sometimes bonus ones if you see a movie by a certain date) and you can use those points towards concessions, or tickets, or contests. Also I get member pricing, something like 3 bucks off of what you'd normally pay for a ticket. If you see something like 25 movies in a year, you get a bonus two free movie tickets. Definitely worth it for me, as I'm at the movies all the time. Maybe not for casual movie goers.

Got to say that home screens are stiff competition now but my local theatre does a lot of live events in connection with screenings to get people in, has a decent cafe and bar and seems to make a good go of it. https://www.picturehouses.com/cinema/the-ritzy

Last time I saw a movie at a cinema was in 1998. This is due to the fact that that big screen televisions and home theater surround sound systems are far more appealing these days. Home theaters have more positives than movie cinemas do.
It is still worth going to see movies that are in IMAX 3D format because even the largest OLED big screen tv system cannot recreate the quality of IMAX. IMAX is great but only if you go to see a really good movie, and there are very few of those these days. The quality of movie content offered at move theaters today is far less than it was 20-50 years ago.
Cinemas have always had rowdy people talking in the audience, and popcorn throwers to annoy you and I always had some tall guy with a big head in the row in front blocking my view, but now the experience is made even worse today with the advent of cell phones. Unless cinemas introduce cell phone jammers, count me out. Streaming at home means you can pause the movie when you want to.
Hollywood used to make "bladder friendly" movies in the past that were only 90 mins long, but today you have Christopher Nolan and Marvel comics making borefest movies which are 3hrs long and when you get older your bladder cannot last that long, and if you leave to go to the bathroom you will either lose your seat or lose track of the plot. Streaming at home allows you to pause the film when you need to see a man about a dog.
The prices these days are just ridiculous when you include tickets, parking and refreshments. One person said " If you see something like 25 movies in a year, you get a bonus two free movie tickets." .... and I say....if you go to the movies 25 times in a year, for that money you could instead buy an 85 inch OLED tv in less than a year that can last you for the next 7-10 years.
Sure, if you are a young couple then the back row of a movie theater has a fun purpose....but that has nothing to do with watching movies.
When I was a youngster the entire point of going to a movie theater was to get away from your parent's house with your girlfriend, and we did not care what movie was playing, so long as we had the back row. But once you grow up and move away from your parents house and get your own home, then you no longer need to go out to have fun,

Prices really aren't that bad...You gotta pay for parking!? That sucks. I've never heard of having to pay to park at a movie theater. Refreshments are probably pricey, honestly I don't get anything to eat or drink at the theater. If I'm going to get anything at all, I'm going out to a real restaurant before or after the movie. As for the OLED TV...I don't even know what that is lol. I couldn't fit an 85 inch TV in my tiny condo. I'll upgrade to 4K eventually (43 inch max), but the regular HD TV I have now works just fine. I wouldn't really save any money buying a TV, because I'd still want to see those movies...so I'd end up having to pay to stream them. And wait to do so in most cases. I can't wait. When a new movie comes out that I want to see, I gotta go see it, waiting is not for me. Movies are my life, and I get great joy in seeing them.

Back in the day before we had VHS and DVDs and online streaming, the only way to see your favorite movies was to stand in line, sometimes for hours, to get in. I remember standing in line for over 3 hours in 1973 to see Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon" when it played at my local cinema in South London, but the wait was well worth it. Similarly a 2hr wait in 1965 for me to get in to see the Beatle's movie "Help".
I also had an age problem and a height problem when I was 16 as every schoolboy in my class wanted to see the nudity in the Hammer horror films, The Vampire Lovers, Twins of Evil, Vampire Circus, Lust for a Vampire as well as Straw Dogs, but all those films were rated X in the UK meaning that you had to look 18 to get in, and I was a short-ass and no way was I getting in. So, my classmates pooled all their pocket money and gave it to the tallest boy in school, who gained entry and then he would open up the back exit door to let the rest of us so we could have a glimpse of the awesome bodies of Ingrid Pitt, Madeline Smith and Susan George.
Now that was a real benefit of the movie theater because even when those films aired on tv years later my Dad would not allow us to watch such films in the house.

As the Future moves forward l believe that Sadly that Movie theater is dying slowly. But l also think people still want to go. I'm an usher now. People still go when for classic movies. Or the opera. I say half and half.

I wish that all movie theater companies ran things the way Alamo draft house does. If you are noisy, on your phone etc you get the boot. As long as theaters allow parents to bring their annoying kids to the movies because they cannot afford a baby sitter I will not be going. I did not pay 30+ bucks a head to listen to your brat scream through the movie. I have not been to a movie theater in almost 2 years now and I don't miss the recent experiences. I used to go to the movies once a month and see 3 or 4 movies in a day. Really enjoyed it, but things went downhill when the local mom and pop theater was bought by Cinemark and ruined. After that I switched to Alamo and loved it. Unfortunately there are not any Alamo's by me. I did pay into the AMC Stubs thing for a year where you could see 2 movies a week plus discounts on concessions and that was nice. Then COVID happened. After COVID I noticed a lot changed.
I really prefer the drive in. I don't have to hear annoying kids for too long if ever. The concessions are cheaper, the movies are cheaper, it is a lot more fun experience. Unfortunately they closed the last drive in near me a few years ago. But, I still make a trek once a year to the West Wind in Vegas for a drive in convention.

I kind of hate that too. I do like seeing some trailers, but really I just want ONE trailer that is basically a teaser. Beyond that they do tend to start showing way too much stuff. It is annoying going to a movie that's supposed to start at 3, and not having it start until 3:20-3:30. I usually try to time when I leave so I show up 20 minutes late and I walk into the theater as the movie is starting...but it's never a sure thing, sometimes I leave late and get stuck in traffic and that blows my plans...

This this this. Theaters are dying because Hollywood is in the active state of murdering them.
Also, streaming has done a lot of damage to damage to the platform because if you don't make your money in the box office, you have no physical release to fall back on.

Sounds like you guys would love The Colonial (the original theater from The Blob) They do classics now. Took my nieces and nephews to see The Princess Bride there. We also have "Blobfest" there in town every year

The local Regal Cinemas (rather large chain in America) I worked at as a projectionist 25 years ago closed down completely. Someone local bought the building and projectors and is now running it as a "family center" that does movies along with other events.Damn fool of a tuber

I hope not...I don't really like the specialty "artsy" theater that's near me...I've had to trek out to it a couple times...one time it was to see Mandy...what a stupid movie, but the "normal" theaters more closer to me me didn't get it...it was a pretty bad experience, tiny cramped mini theater and a girl who laughed like Rosanne Barr laughing for the duration of the movie...I ended up going back last year to see The Substance, and it was playing in the "studio" theater...which was an even more tiny and cramped room. Basically 20 fold out chairs in a room the size of my bedroom with a TV on the wall...the movie was great, but what a disappointing set up. Luckily, there are 3 normal theaters within 25-45 minutes from me, and usually when my main one doesn't get something, the second closest one typically does...and if not that, then there's always the other one. Gotta make a trip out to the farthest one on Thursday to see the new Looney Tunes movie!
I like seeing everything, I'm not standoffish to "cash grabs" I'll go see every single Marvel movie, and I have...I love that stuff. I love over the top action nonsense movies like John Wick, and the Mission Impossibles...I love horror movies of all forms (although you gotta watch out for the hype on some of them...). I can also appreciate movies like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (one of my all time favs), There Will Be Blood, Fargo, Amélie, etc...Anyways, I support it all (okay, I don't go see bio-pics, dance movies, or musicals), which is why I find myself at the theater so much and would be disappointed for it to go away. There's room for everything! I don't get all the hate towards stuff that isn't artsy. Not everything has to make you think or be profound or revolutionary, can't it just be fun?
