I've found mixing methyl gunge such a hard work. Not really sure what I'm doing wrong, but this evening my girlfriend fancied getting messy and I only had Methyl gunge power to hand. I've had loads of problems getting this stuff to mix properly in the past. The first time, I tried to mix it into very hot water, stirring the water as I poured, the powder went in fine but the gunge refused to thicken to the consistency I wanted. The thickest I could get it to was like soup.

Next time, I tried it, with warm water and the power formed into large lumps that floated in the water and could not break down.

Third attempt, after watching some mixing videos online, I used my food mixer, and warm water - just like I saw on the video. I gently sprinkled the power into the water but the powder just sat on the surface. I raised the mixer slightly, spraying the water across the room, but the power then went under yet it formed horrible hard lumps once again.

Final test was to go back to really hot water and this time, yet again, very thin gunge with loads of lumps. I tired to physically mush the lumps with my hands - inside they contained loads of dry powder, which then stuck to my wet hands - and would not get mixed back into the water.

I think I am well and truly finished with methyl gunge - which is a shame because I've seen how good it looks, but I just can't achieve the right mix.

I'm going back to Natrosol, good old tip into hot water and stir for 5 mins natrosol. Why the fuck would i ever want for anything else??

Anyone else had issues with it and if so, what was your eventual solution?

You can also do a trick that is kinda cool without a super heavy duty mixer. Due to methyl's qualities, it dissolves very poorly in warm to hot water but very easily in cold water, it disperses very poorly in cold water but very easily in warm to hot water. So: mix cold, dump dissolved slurry into hot water and stir, let cool to warm and itll be very thick.

I've had to play with it and learned this from a poster on the forums. Natrasol is more forgiving, but it all depends on the source, messy supplies methyl is less temperamental than pure methylcellulose but I'm sure this trick would work even with theirs.

There are lots of different grades of Methyl and they all seem to behave differently. As others said you need a good mixer and add the powder slowly. It does also dissolve better in cool water and disperse better in warm. You do sometimes find that the Gunge will thicken up as the Gunge cools down. You should also be aware that some Methyl is designed to dissolve in a solvent rather than water so make sure you get the right grade.

We currently have a small batch of Methyl that is as easy to mix as Natrosol. Just add it to the water in the same way as Natrsol and you can mix by hand.

Natrasol is just a brand name for hydroxyethyl cellulose. It's sold in different purities and molecular weight just like methyl cellulose.

Sounds like you have a bad quality one or a bad batch. Simple as that.

what I think he is dealing with is ordering natrasol mixes, like I have, and they are much harder to deal with.

i have had some i have had to pour in cold water, let sit over night and THEN go mix with a paint mixer attached to a drill. same thing happened with some clay i ordered. it clumped up. once i let it sit overnight....then i was able to mix it bc it soaked up the water....BUT, if you get the right stuff, you should be able to do exactly what sneakerpup said....seriously, i wont go ANYWHERE else besides "MESSY SUPPLIES" for mine anymore....bc its easy, you can have the mixture as warm as you want it, and you can mix it exactly like sneakerpup said. and if it has ANY lumps you can break them down but if you pour the mix, then pour the water on and mix RIGHT AFTER you pour the water in.....ITS LIKE BUTTER!! i would suggest getting a paint mixer to put on your drill for mixing. they are like 5 bucks at a hardware store. for those big buckets GOOD LUCK!!! if you still have some of the stuff you have left over.....try putting it in a bucket of warm water, letting it sit overnight and then try mixing it the next day. it should mix smoothly.

I agree with Jayce, messy supplies makes superior products but for the less than stellar batches from other suppliers, the cold water trick can definitely help out with methylcelluslose I haven't had to try it with natrasol yet

Since there clearly aren't enough radically different approaches in this thread yet here's the way it's done, per instructions for industrial use (soaps, makeup, etc)

Depends a lot on the grade, but for most of the stuff I ever purchased from TheChemistryStore, the correct mix is between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup powder per gallon. Note that it thickens as it cools. HOT mc will never thicken. COLD may be close to jello. Find the appropriate mix for that batch to create the viscosity you want at body temp. (most comfortable for the recipient) For me it was usually about 1/3 cup per gallon for a nice pourable, yet semi-thick consistency.

To mix, always put the powder in first. Then add a half cup of COLD water. Mix by hand until it's smooth like cake batter. Then add HOT water and hand-mix the holy bejesus out of it for a FULL 5 MINUTES. This is the most important part. Don't stop mixing. Tired? Change hands. Exhausted, Hand it off to another person.

Because you are creating long-chain polymers, fast power mixers are contraindicated (again, as per manufacturers instructions for industrial use) Fast mixing with sharp edged implements will cut those chains into smaller pieces and reduce the viscosity at a particular temperature. This is very important for slime made with PVA (glue) and PolyOx. Not so critical with meth, but still something to keep in mind. If you are lazy, a bread dough mixer might be just the ticket.

One thing I have noticed about lumps is that they will usually dissipate if you let the mixture sit for several hours or overnight. They you can nuke it back to a higher temp if you want.

soundguy, you are right, I was just checking what I had bought before that was SUCH a pain and it was just straight up methyl.

I let it sit overnight, though? and it was just fine the next day when I would go to mix it with my drill and paint mixer....it would be a huge clump in a bowl of water and would mix right up!!

but the chemistry store is a good one too IF you know what you are looking for....and if you want a quick and easy mix, READ INTO IT HEAVILY.

i have just found that i enjoy methyl warm...and in big batches and one bag from messy supplies makes like 2.5 gallons of mixture? a little more? anyway, i just know that it goes a long way and is super easy. i am too impatient and pretty dull minded to deal with all that other stuff.... i have before and OMG. i wanted to scream! i mean, once i got it done i was happy but GOT DAMN! soundguy knows about me being a complete and total dumbass so....lol. that is why i just get the easy peasy, ready to mix stuff. its worth it to me, even if it may cost a little more...which i dont think its much....its ready. its colored just how i like it and i KNOW im not gonna fuck it up!! lol!!! all my last "green gunge" scenes have been from someone who got me some for a custom and a little extra and it went a LONG way!! I COULDNT BELIEVE how far it got me he got himself a nice little free custom for that one! okay!! i have talked enough on here, i just FEEL YOUR PAIN bc i have BEEN THERE! whew! it WAS a nightmare and felt impossible! I was about ready to give up on using "gunge" altogether! dont give in!!! there is hope!!
