OK...the last time I bought methylcellulous was from thechemistrystore.com. it was simple. As long as the water was hot, I dumped in a scoop of powder and it dissolved wonderfully. I've now ordered powder from 2 other places and no matter what I do, it doesn't want to dissolve very easy. It keeps clumping up as soon as it hits the water. If I add it slow while using a Whisk really fast, it does somewhat OK, but still has some lumps. Any advice? I have a custom way overdue and have been trying for 2 weeks to get this stuff right! Ugh!
I'm gonna give this another go this evening with the stuff I have. I've already wasted 3 lbs of this stuff. Lol. 2 lbs of stuff I ordered off amazon and 1 lb of the stuff from monster makers. I tried the electric mixer and had the same results. The batch I have made up now seemed to mix decent, its just too thin to use. I guess I need to use more of this stuff than I did with the first. I'll get it right eventually. I swear. Lol
On the bright side, since the girls were already there to shoot the custom, even thought the slime wouldn't cooperate, I had them hang out while I ran to the bakery and pied the hell out of both of them. So it wasn't a total loss. I'll have that video up as soon as I finish editing.
We use the gunge that Gunge Tank Babes sell, and have had some truly awesome results with it, it's also incredibly easy to mix. We fill a bucket with water from the hot tap (which is hot but not scalding here) and then start mixing it with a paint mixer attachment on an electric dill, and then mix the powder in steadily. Makes awesome gunge (see attached pics) and never had any problem with lumps at all, it just mixes.
Methyl cellulose comes in quite a lot of various grades. We've used around 10 or 11 grades over the years. Some of it mix's well in warm water, some needs hot and some needs cold. Some need a "forced" mix. Even using an electric mixer it may clump. There are so many grades that without knowing what you have its difficult to know how best to mix it. If its clumping as soon as it hots the water you can try mixing all of the powder with around 1 or 2 cups of hot water and mix it into a paste. An electric mixer will help with this. From that you can then dissolve the paste into some water. We have had success mixing the Methyl that way before.

Man, some of this methy info needs to be added to our wiki! That page is a bit thin
Ummm.....you are missing one important end stage step from your recipe.....i.e. you use hot water to initially prepare the mix but once stirred in you must "shock" the mixture with bags of ice and continue stirring in the ice water .......that is what we always did....and it worked in our gunge tank....

That is an awesome pic! Both ladies look fantastic covered in pie! I love that the blonde on the right is laughing!

Why do you think our girls had that "shocked" expression on their faces.....because the slime is freezing cold once it is prepared.....
You can't make good slime with just hot water alone....the mix needs to be shocked with bags of ice when you mix it in.

Wow, I'm really glad Mr JnC never swore by that method - it would have put me off for life!
When we used methyllcellulose from the Chemistry Store we put the powder in the bucket first and added the hot water while stirring. The only times we had a problem with that method was when we didn't mix it up enough to start with and it clumped at the bottom of the bucket. I have to disagree with the statement "You can't make good slime with just hot water alone" - it's always worked well for us.
Now we use Gunge Tank Babe's gunge powder too and it's even easier to mix up and very reliable, I highly recommend it

It really depends on what grade of Methyl you are using. Mixing it into a spate with hot water and then diluting down with cold works with some grades but isn't essential on all grades of Methyl. Thats a kind of last resort if it won't mix normally.

Its the same with Hydroxy Ethyl Cellulose. There are lots of different grades and manufacturers. Natrosol 250HR is just one grade of HEC. We've used 4 or 5 grades of Natrosol, all are different as well as HEC from other manufacturers in different grades. Our current batch of HEC is fantastic, all the benefits of an easy to mix, ready to use in 4 minutes gunge as well as being Opaque so the colouring is really solid.
To us, its as much fun experimenting with different grades and manufacturers to find the best possible Gunge. People should remember Natrosol is just a trade name for a brand of Hydroxy Ethyl Cellulose.
I have found a hand blender quite effective for this type. For even better results, don't use it straight away. I have often left mine for 15-20 mins to let the water soak into any remaining lumps and then gone back to it with the hand blender again and it's smooth as anything.
ok...success. i was able to use a hand mixer and blend it for a long time. it got out most of the lumps and after letting it set a while, went back to it with the mixer. i made the new batches REALLY thick so i could blend in the stuff i made earlier that was too thin...eliminating having to throw it away. im going through now and blending it all again, mixing all the buckets together so it's all a uniform thickness. im scheduled to shoot tomorrow afternoon so im sure it will thicken up even more by then and may need thinned out a little to pour. i'm excited that i FINALLY get to shoot this video. i know a certain customer who is probably more than ready for his custom. thanks for being so patient, man...you're the best.

Great to hear that you have had some success. Its not easy to mix but once you get the hang of it its not too bad.
If anybody wants to try MethylCellulose Gunge I have a small quantity to clear at 6.99 per KG. This stuff is tricky to mix but if you use an electric mixer or blender it does mix ok.
With the chem store products, the most foolproof method is to put the measured powder in the jug or bucket, add a half cup of COLD water, mix into a "roo", then fill the container with HOT water. The most important step with either methyl or ethyl is to IMMEDIATELY start mixing continuously for 3-5 minutes. After that, it's generally stable and won't clump.
Because I don't like making the girls shiver, I always use it hot. Since it gets several times thicker as it cools, I tend to use a bit more powder to get the consistency I want at the higher temperature. 1/4 cup per gallon is just about perfect for me. If you are going to use it cold, you can probably do the same amount in 1.5 gallons.

problem is, chem store no longer carries methyl. they replaced it with some other thickener. since methyl is all ive used, i wasn't sure about the other stuff. so i ordered it elsewhere. i got it all figured out now. have 10 buckets full waiting for the girls to arrive any minute. wish me luck!
The slime came out awesome! Now that I figured out how to use this lower grade stuff, I can't wait to use it more. Its been a while since I got to dump some slime!
