I fell out with Bill due to me having an argument with Hayley in the Splosh forum.
I was well aware that Hayley was Bill and was not happy with him hiding behind a fake skirt.
We all know how arguing with popular "female" wammers go.
I don't approve of producers playing the role of females, even more so when that character picks a fight with me.
I always respected Bill for the massive role he had in this community and everything he did.
However that didn't make it ok for him to be a jerk.
We did however meet shortly before his death, at the Birmingham meet.
We had a good chat and got on quite well together.
In real life he seemed quite a kind gentle man.
I'm glad I got to meet him in person.

Honestly, I never knew that. I feel very naive now...
There really was a model called Hayley for Splosh, as she appeared in a few films and photo sets - I'm pretty sure that wasn't Bill in drag - but on the forum "she" was actually Bill? He gave her a whole back story too, of her having been a very young single mum (ie she had a teenage/grown up son by the latter days of Splosh), and that he and Hayley had been in a relationship in the past although were just good friends now. Well, I guess Bill was a writer for magazines...
I was at least aware of one piece of truth-stretching on Splosh. That "pig-pen" story, which supposedly happened to "Hayley" as a teenager, was far too extreme to be at all plausible. Still, it was an entertaining read - if they wanted to invent a WAM urban legend, fair enough - so I just shrugged every time Bill/Hayley insisted it was true to anyone on the forum who questioned it.
But again, Bill was Hayley? Damn.

Can confirm, Bill was Hayley
I was totally taken in.. I had heard rumours and dismissed them at the time! Bill talked about her as if she were real. I now think he was referring to long past relationship experiences that he drew on to give advice.
The model who posed as Hayley did not have a log in and never posted. I only found out when she contacted me after Bill died to say he owed her £500 and could I find out who she should talk to about it.
I have only told a handful of people because I know it's quite upsetting news to find out you spilled your deepest darkest fantasies on a regular basis to someone basically posing.
I absolutely adored him, I know he could be grumpy on the forums but in RL he was ace. This does taint the memory of him a little though - I was gutted when I got that email.

I suspect a bit of a generational divide at play, back in the 70s there were lots of adult magazines with allegedly-female contributors, many of which I gather were actually written by men, I believe Bill worked for at least one of them. Back then it was seen as harmless fantasy for guys in an era when men and women were almost two separate species by the way people acted and lived. Bill was from that era, it could be argued it died with him.
I met him once, same as Leon did at the famous Birmingham mega-splunch, he was a nice chap to talk to and full of interesting stories, and I'm glad I got to meet him.

Bill did some shoots with a Model and called her Hayley for the Splosh magazine in the 80's.
In that respect, when two way communication was harder, it probably worked really well.
From what I recall, she was kind of a WAM agony aunt.
Not saying that people didn't build relationships through pen and paper communications, but it was a different thing altogether.
But she should have been left there in the magazine, in the 80's.
It was wrong to bring her into the digital age, where people build on line relationships and can become very close and invested in the people they communicate with.

Yes, that's fair comment about Bill being a different generation and seeing these things differently. That's why, although in principle it's the same as what **** was doing with Jessie, I'm sure Bill's take on it was more benign. (Even so, female users who did think they were talking to a woman may still have their own view.)
I can also relate to your point about not getting the response you expect when you think you're dealing with a woman. There were a couple of upbeat PMs I sent to Jessie, before it all came out, and at the time I was a bit deflated at "her" unenthusiastic replies. Of course, I understand it now...

He came across as a teller of tall tales and not in the fun kind of way, in the he wanted to sell it kind of way. I didn't know about the whole Hayley thing though. Until now. Reading this thread.
In person, I wanted to give him a fair shake but he came across as a teller of tall tales and not very genuine. Didn't want to have a conversation, just wanted to talk. It was stark comparison to meeting everyone else that night who wanted to ask questions as well as give answers.
Out of the Sploshing thing he was probably a lovely fella judging by others opinions. I didn't see it though. Kind of wish I had so I didn't have negativity, but that's life. I'm sure people don't like me but won't get a chance to actually know me.

I feel I need to join this conversation at least to give another perspective. I knew Bill quite well over the years and would say in my opinion, that he was genuinely good company, yes very talkative but always interested in the people he was with.
Whilst "Hayley" may have been a fictional figure there was a a girl who was Bill's Secretary in his days at Razzle magazine and she continued to work for Bill in his days on Splosh and indeed featured in at least one item that I recall seeing in the magazine. So there was some truth in her character which was loosely based on this real person whom I actually met in a pub with Bill when he lived in South East London. I am not trying to defend the man but I fear he is being criticised slightly unfairly. Yes he could be cantankerous as several UMD posts showed, but he was a passionate enthusiast for our common interest and deserves to be remembered as a trail blazer and sadly passed away too soon.

Ah yes, you're one of the handful of folks who's actually spoken to me over the years! (FTR: Robby, Ken, and Neil before his excommunication from the UMD.)
I remember being always baffled at how you rubbed some folks the wrong way here... You were unfailingly polite in that oh-so-British way in person. But I also have a tendency to be too snarky for my own good on here sometimes. My theory is snark is "charming" in real life but can get abrasive on a forum like this one.
And by that measuring stick, Regis in person is probably the kindest old grandmother you'd ever want to meet....

Text is hard to convey tone with, but I don't think that's what it is. I wouldn't go as far as unfailingly polite but I treat people with the respect they deserve, not what they demand. Might be something to the relationship between snark and charming though. I'm completely crushing on Regis.
