"Can WAM cause hair loss?"

So I've had a pretty lucky run this year, getting messy a lot more times than I have in the previous 5 years!
I'm also blessed with a full hair of very long hair (most the way down my back)
However I've noticed lately that my hairline is thinning out (above the forehead of all places- no hiding from it!).
Is this just aging, or could it be due to mechanical (or chemical?) damage from the mess I've been playing in?

It's a possibility. there are professional wammers on here who have taken lengthy hiatus from making videos did to hair follicles being pulled down by the weight of mess. The amount of cleaning can also add stress to your scalp. They've returned afterwards with their hair having recovered, but you need to take measures to ensure that.
Maybe take a break, use hair strengthening products, or use a shower cap when you get slimed. Or maybe it's just age?

Yep, traction alopecia but I did really overdo it for a ling time, lots of very very heavy stuff on my hair several times a week for ten years, in private sessions and some vids
It is recovering a bit now but it's taken 2 years, and I'm lucky it's coming back as sometimes if hair is pulled out over and over the follicle just quits. Like many who regret overplucking eyebrows in the 90s and now they can't be grown thick
Jayce recommended the bosely minty shampoo and one of my long time clients very kindly sent it to me. I've also been using watermans shampoo
I think the biggest difference has come from slowing down how often I was messy. I'd say once or twice a month and by all means get hair messy but never use cold thick syrups as they pull so much out in particular
I also never use heated tools anymore, no hairdryer or straightening etc
Never want to put anyone off, as I say I was really overdoing it in a big way. Just be careful though x

There's a genetic issue too that has some influence. If you got the male pattern gene, you got it from the opposite sex parent, i.e., your mother. Now look at her father. He's the key. Some substances can really dry out and damage your hair, so when you brush it more hair gets pulled out by your brush/comb. Shaving cream and clay do a number on my hair.

Regarding the chemical side of this question MS Gunge or Natrasol is a form cellulose extracted from plants. It is used in a butt-load of hair and cosmetic products (relevant article: https://www.anveya.com/blogs/top-tips/role-of-hydroxyethyl-cellulose-in-hair-care-products) and speaking of a butt-load it is the principle ingredient in this anal lube (https://www.lovehoney.co.uk/sex/lubricants/water-based-lubes/p/lovehoney-enjoy-water-based-lubricant-250ml/65525.html). Given that cotton is also about 95% cellulose given the amount of hydroxyethyl cellulose we'd come into prolonged exposure to in hair & skin care products and in our clothing if it chemically caused hair loss there wouldn't be any market for shaving or waxing products.
So long as you aren't sat there drinking large quantities of the stuff (it's a soluble form of fibre and you will wind up with acute diarrhoea) there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Can't speak for any foods not listed. Personally I'd recommend the Vivi-Lite over the Vivi-extreme chemically speaking.

flour is something i have learnt to stay away form as its a basted to get out of hair and have found it in my hair days after fgetting messy with it

I too am blessed with a full head of hair down my back! Wait...that's not what you meant...
If it were due to WAM it would have less of a pattern to it and either be concentrated to certain areas (splotchy), or more on the opposite end more even.
If you're thinning up top and in the front but your sides and back are fine, welcome to middle age and balding. If you're really passionate about keeping what you have, I recommend you look into both Rogaine and Propecia NOW. It will not get better, and chances are even using both of those products you won't get any back, just stop or minimize your losses. Personally, I just use Rogaine because the side effects of Propecia are not really something I want. Ask your doctor, call Bosley etc.
I'm not trying to be a downer or freak you out. I used to have VERY thick hair, but by 30, most of my hair was much thinner. Now at almost 40, I have a very large forehead, bare crown, and very little in the front. Whatever I had on my head has migrated south for the winter of my years,
It may not be what you want to hear, and you can fight it, but just realize that it's a war of attrition. Even with the medications, even with hair replacement treatments (which is a misnomer, because they are simply moving hair from one part of your head to another), if going bald is in your genes, you can't do much about it until they are more successful in cloning hair.

Vivi-Extreme may not be the best idea for hair care- but the stuff is insanely fun to play with!!
Its a good shout mentioning the ponytail- I've gotten a few headaches from the pulling when it's gotten too tight without noticing it until its too late, so keeping a closer eye on it now.
(I can't wear my hair down at work- too many power tools to get tangled in)
If its the genetic baldness kicking in, then well I've had a good run- when people have asked about my hair I've often said I'm making the most of it while it lasts. So I'll probably donate it (Little Princess Trust) before the top goes completely.

There are Chinese herbs that make your hair grow back / turn it back from white to what ever color u were before. I've seen someone use it and they went from all white to fake jet back hair. But U have to find a acupuncturist or Chinese herbalist you trust m, or a store that does all the holistic herbal stuff that knows what they are doing. It will prob be semi expensive and from all the herbs I have had to take for other issues I promise it will be the worst thing you have ever tasted food drink wise in your life.

I'm 30 already starting to loose it and have yet to do anything with anyone.

As others have said, much of this has to do with genetics either way. Your hair gets punished day after day if you are using products, towel or blow drying. I don't see gunge causing more damage unless it's to an extreme or if using unnatural/difficult to remove substances.
I've always used things that will wash away under a steady stream of water without the need for much scrubbing which probably helps.
Any sudden changes where you are beginning to lose large amounts of hair, especially in cases where you are finding decent amounts hair on your pillow when you wake up would definitely be something to discuss with your doctor (again, as others mentioned).

My hair is longer than usual (partly because of the pandemic), but I have noticed that it is more likely to get more tangled at the ends. So I have to be more gentle when combing it so I don't pull it out. (Not directly related to WAM, but it still might be relevant.)

I know for certain that people have lost their hair because of having crude oil products in their hair. The cleaning process may also be more dangerous for your hair, than the goo you are putting in you hair.
