I was watching a scene recently and it occurred to me that I've only really ever seen this one model is the only one I've seen wear a certain clothing item in any of the scenes on their site, and it had me wondering the question above.
Obviously if there's a script it's one thing, but how is it decided otherwise? Does the model approach you like "hey I'd like to wear X outfit" for this scene, or is it because scenes with the model wearing something have sold well?
My assumption is that sometimes it's also like "we went thrifting for clothes recently and Jane picked this out to wear".
The two main reasons for any outfit choice are: 1. Outfits the producer really likes. 2. Outfits the producer believes will sell well.
Every producer will have their own preferences and favourite outfits, which they'll tend to do multiple versions of - theres a reason I shoot so many scenes with girls in boilersuits.
The sales stats will tell each producer what their best selling scenes are, and loves and comments show what gets the biggest reaction outside of sales. But often things aren't as obvious as you might expect, nude scenes don't necessarily outsell clothed ones for instance.
Another factor is that producers will generall be better at shooting thngs they actually like and are into themselves, so everyone will tend to have their own specialities.
I like to influence our outfit choices for Kate to wear because I like that direction. However, I will say that for some strange reason, rainbow stuff just does not attract financial attention I thought it would. I cannot explain it. Anything unicorn or pride or rainbow - simply is not popular for some reason. I like it and will continue to film it because that is what I enjoy. I just hope others enjoy it as well at some point as much as I do. Other than that, we continue to film what we like and occasionally take input/direction from the forums and messages.
I ask the model her sizing information and any colors she think will look her best and buy it myself.
For the longest time I'd give models a mood board and let them decide what of their own clothes to wear, but they would still usually wear clothes that didn't fit well or were all black or otherwise was clearly in their "disposable" pile. If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.
While I have my own favorites and preferences, our main mission at A Splash of Glamour is to produce the highest quality image we can. Part of the process is that we have to pick just the right styles, fashions, and looks that grab attention, without destroying our budget
We are conscious of what our customers want to see, and we try to accommodate them as much as possible. We know the majority prefer seeing women wearing jeans, and many others who rather prefer business suits or dresses, and we offer a mix. What we don't do are outfits that are so niche that it appeals to a tiny fraction of our customers, primarily because of interest and costs. Afterall, we still need to make a profit.
So how do we come across the outfits we use? Obviously, we do a lot of clothes shopping at the local thrift stores. Usually my wife and I go alone and pick things we think will work, in common sizes. But we have also taken along models and let them help pick outfits based on their own tastes. A number of outfits we acquire are purchased online from sites like Ebay, Etsy, etc. I do this to find very specific things we cannot find at our local thrift or consignment stores, or if the price is better. Another source for outfits comes by my wife. As a hobby, my wife loves to sew, and she can make some beautiful clothes for our photos. Sometimes models bring their own clothes. Of these we have had models with a fantastic sense for fashion and we used their own outfits for our shoots. And sometimes, we work with models and combine what they brought and what we have.
Very good question, and it's interesting to hear from producers. On the amateur side of things, I half-jokingly told my partner in crime that I wear favorite but vintage outfits that I'd be okay with being relegated to lawn-mowing clothes. Somehow they've all survived unscathed, so score one for the washing machine.
I've received some outfit suggestions, and since they tend to align with clothes I'd love to have anyway, I'm keeping an eye out at thrifts. That said, I don't consider myself fashion savvy by any means.
I must admit, it came as a profound shock to me to discover that many producers expect models to wear their own outfits to wam shoots, it seems to be pretty much endemic in wetlook.
I've always provided all outfits, underwear, footwear, etc, for all our people for all of our scenes. Partly because it'd never occur to me to ask anyone to risk their own gear getting damaged, stained, or smelly, from a splosh shoot, and partly because I'm fanatically fussy about outfits and there are lots of things I absolutely would never want in a shoot. I regard low-rise outfits as an utter abomination, and there are lots of other things I'm very fussy about. I also know a lot about womenswear, I think as well as a WAM fetish I also have a clothing fetish, at least in terms of enjoying looking at outfits being worn by women.
The day I first met Friday, in a field at a festival in Germany, we were introduced as model and photographer by a mutual friend, so I asked if she'd be interested in sploshing. "But will it ruin my outfits?" she asked. "No no, I supply everything you'd get messy in", I replied. "Oh hell yes, count me in!" was her enthusiastic response, and she's done many epic scenes since, everything from swimsuit filling to PVC catsuits - all in outfits supplied by us.
Producers expecting models to wear their own gear, and hence girls dressing in their oldest, ugliest, least-favourite and displosable things, would explain why so many scenes featured clothes (like aforementioned low-rise abominations) that went totally out of fashion years before the shoot in question.

It's funny how people's opinnions differ, Personally i like it when models wear their own clothes. The idea that the outfit they wore doing their weekly food shop is now in the pool or that they're swimming in a dress and/or shoes that they'll wear out for dinner at the weekend. It's why i've always enjoyed Erik Elsas's work.
I will add that i'd rather things didn't get ruined and if they are i'd hope the producers replace them.

Not to bring up sore subjects- but MostWam had a thing where Lisa would go out with some sort of portable hot tub and pay "random" passersby to get in fully clothed.
They had legit backstories (ie "we found Jane as she was making her way to meet her boyfriend for lunch and convinced her to get in the pool, Jane was in a sundress and sandals") but I always wondered how random the people were and some of their reactions in pictures said otherwise.

Also see Eurowam's Wetlook and Wam hunter videos. Actually, I think most of their content is filmed using the models own clothes.
I doubt anyone ever delibaretly choses that? In our case we have possibly the widest range of outfits of any producer currently operating, we've literally done everything from boilersuits to ballgowns.
gebakje said: 4 the greed for easy and cheap mass production of films
That more applies to producers who expect models to wear their own clothes - running a comprehensive WAM wardrobe takes time and money.
gebakje said: 5 in the case of wam and other fetishes, the choice of cheap throw away clothing and the choice of easy-to-clean clothing such as PVC and rubber also plays a role
You've obviously never met anyone who wears latex fetish gear. Very expensive, and complicated to clean and care for, and very complex to use in a WAM shoot - you don't just throw latex gear in the washing machine. PVC is a but easier to handle and can be machine washed, but still needs more care than plain fabric clothing does.
The reason people use latex and PVC in scenes is that there are significant fetishes for those types of clothing, even without getting messy. Several of our top-selling scenes are PVC ones.
gebakje said: Take Japanese erotic films, 70% of these movies consist of women in school uniforms, cosplay, teachers and office clothes. For Japan this may be the main fetish or preference, but worldwide people want to see more variety.
Do they? The Japanese uniform fetish is massive, both in Japan and abroad, lots of international customers will buy Japanese scenes specifically for the uniforms and office styles.
gebakje said: for worldwide sales it would be better that your own preferences are not the leading factor. You don't just make these films for yourself, you want to sell them as much as possible
That's true - however the thing with WAM is it's a very low-return business. It took me seven years just to break even and probably another seven to make back everything spent in those first years. Back in the 1990s the legendary Rob Blaine once told me "Shoot what you personally want to see, don't try and chase a market. That way, the passion will come through in the quality of the work, and even if it doesn't sell you'll be left with something you can enjoy." He was right than and arguably even more right now.
gebakje said: As an example, I love those Chinese satin dresses, and I would like to see them used during WAM and other fetish events. The fact is that those movies are very difficult to find
We've actually done two scenes like that, link below. But as ever, the best way to get something you really want to see filmed, which no-one else is doing, is to comission a custom. If it sells well the producer may well do more similar scenes, that's how we got into doing rainwear and waterproofs, it started with a custom scene and when that sold, we did more off them, and rainwear is now in our regular rotation of outfits to use.
Mostly, it is because I have been drawn to mess in that particular clothing! But, if I get a lot of requests for a certain item, then if I happen to find it on sale-it is a go!

Likewise hun. Dressing up to mess up is half the fun

that is kinda a surprise. like i can understand a bit more for wetlook because, as long as you take care of the clothes and they arent something super fancy or need super strict ways of cleaning, they should generally come through all right.
for messy, i always thought it was largely opposite (at least for the more professional producer stuff (and not just an amateur(s) doing their own stuff at home with whatever they have) with models using their own clothes as the minority. i like the idea of models using their own decent outfits (and not just bodgy/out-of-style/disposable outfits) but at the same time i'd hope they'd get compensated for it in return.
