So recently I've developed more and more of an interest (well, let's say I need) to get messy at home, but my biggest hurdle in that regard is allowing myself to get messy as I want WITHOUT destroying the entire house!
So far what I've done is invest in a paddling pool (not particularly big, but did the job I suppose) and some dust proof sheets, as well as getting messy in the shower to make clean up a little easier, but I'd anyone else has experience or tips in regards to minimizing mess I'd be very grateful.
In particular I was thinking of a padding pool which was relatively deep or had high walls, but searching for said pool on Amazon turned up no results.
Thanks in advance for your help guys ^_^ -Wallowhog
Oh 100% glad to give some tips. Typically I invest in disposable painter tarps. Generally they run for $3-5 at the hardware store. If you are in the U.S. 1.5inch thickness minimum. Otherwise I have fleece throws. In the area I am getting messy in I double or triple cover it. Then I run a path of tarps from the mess area to the bathroom. I try to have a pair of slippers or two to put on to not leave footprints. I bag the tarps in order from messiest to cleanest so generally from the epicenter to the bathroom. To bag I generally pull the dirty tarp towards the clean and bag over the clean tarp. Final tarp would be bagged over the shower. To be on the safe side I drop off a trash bag every 2-3 tarps.
I have a 2x2m blowup pool with sides about 40cm high. I have found it big enough for containing some good slimy custard fun with a mate without trashing everything else around. I make sure the residue is well diluted by the time it goes down the drain after. The pool is bigger than my bathroom, so I decant by scooping out with a container first and clean it off with a towel that I rinse out several times. I got the pool at my local Argos - easypeasy!
I'll present another approach, and that is doing some experimentation to find the least amount of mess that you still get some pleasure from.
For example, while I enjoy getting totally covered, I can also be 80% as happy with just getting my face messy. Most of the time, that's all I do, and that's enough for regular messings. Then, when there's company, or I am ready for a big production, I break out all the stuff.
I also focus on substances that have more of a "punch" with less cleanup. Stuff that is more thick and sticky and not as runny, for example, creates less of a mess.
Are there other things that can simulate what you enjoy with mess? Spandex, for example, gives me the feeling of mess without the cleanup. Combining spandex with a mess on the face can give a similar experience to a complete mess.
I pretty much follow the same procedure as AGungeFox. Depending on how much work I want to put into the solo session, I'll sometimes inflate a small plastic pool (cheap online), put some plastic sheeting inside and underneath and the surrounding area (yes, get the 1.5 or 2 mm size), then put another plastic sheet down from the pool to the bathroom with the shower. Tape the edges to the wall, a foot or so from the floor, to protect the baseboards and help prevent overflow onto the carpet. Have all of your gunge product opened and on the plastic next to the pool - nothing worse than realizing you can't open a container because you need a can opener or knife and they're all in the kitchen. Have a washcloth on hand next to the pool to first clean your eyes and then clean the pool. If the pool is in the bedroom, I'll put some plastic sheeting on the bed also, to prevent accidents.
If I don't want to use the pool, I'll use the shower - which is obviously very easy for cleanup - or sometimes stand in front of the bathroom mirror so I can watch myself. But I'll put down some old newspaper to pick up any droppings, and the newspaper can then be tossed away easily.
If I have one or more gungebuds over for a session, we still follow the same route as I first outlined, just with more towels. If we use the large pool (the ten footer), one guy brings his electric handpump, which saves time in preparation. Everyone helps with set up and cleaning.
Almost forgot - have a few strong plastic Hefty bags available for the cleanup. The more empties you can toss in the bags right away, the easier the cleanup. Avoid the cheaper garbage bags, as they can rip while you're transporting the messy empties from one place to another. You can also deflate the pools and store them clean in the Hefty bags (I have one in the closet right now!).

I use drain friendly items and limit my fun to the tub. However if you're on a septic system or the pipes in your place are small your mileage may vary
I second the advice to have a good supply of strong trash bags to hand close to where you are getting messy.
Paddling pools are great for containing mess and will hold a suprising amount without overflowing - at least 10 litres in my experience. However, do have a plan for emptying them out as trying to move them when full is asking for trouble. I tend to 'bail' with a bucket I've used for pouring into the toilet and flush it with water after every load.
Other tip is to cover over any crevaces before starting with plastic or painter's tape or something. Gunge has a habit of eagerly finding its way into places that are the most difficult to clean.
flimsy sheeting is good for walls, just make sure it's securely attached or it might fall down when it gets splattered
if there is going to be buckets and buckets of mess then an inflatable pool can be great. Line it with heavy grade polythene - the flimsy stuff just stick to you. Then you can throw the heavy grade polythene away after and not have to clean the pool much
Or (I do this option most often) I clean it by scooping, usually just with hands is fine or a dustpan (check it has no sharp edges) scoop stuff back into buckets and have towels or plastic outside the pool as well to put the used buckets on.
Have a different bucket or couple of jugs of warm soapy water nearby and throw those in the pool once the majority of stuff is scooped out, then clean with microfibre cloths. Dry it with towels or paper towels or leave it inflated to air dry.
Or, if you're feeling very flush and don't mind the waste, just pop/slash and deflate the pool and put into a few heavy grade binbags after (again after scooping or it will be too heavy)
other options for smaller amounts of mess include smaller pools, or making a little 'mess nest' with a few layers of towels, and rolled up towels around the edges to stop any liquids flowing away, then cover the whole lot with fairly thick polythene
or the bath - get any shampoo and shower gel bottles out of the way first for easy cleaning after and only use stuff that will go down the drain (custard, gunge, syrups, shaving foam)
If you want to use savoury or lumpy stuff in the bath, have a bucket ready to scoop lumpy things into so they get get flushed down the loo or poured down a good wide drain if available (having a hose is a good idea for this too, loo is preferable as it adds water automatically)
for any of the options, have a bin bag or two handy as well, preferably propped open by folding down the sides over an actual bin or bucket. Being able to get tins, jars, cartons etc out of the way and not languishing in your pool or bath or on the floor is great
those cheapo/free slippers you sometimes get in hotels can be good to keep for the messy walk from pool to shower
Have some drain unfucker in stock too just in case!
Oh and lemons - shower gel with real lemon, plus some real lemons and or lemon juice for any laundry after using dairy or stinky items
And after getting messy and after the initial clean up, go do something else for half an hour then go back and check the space with fresh eyes for anything you missed

I can attest that Candy is the Queen of Cleaning tips, I use many of her methods and they work brilliantly (especially the lemons!)
I only have my tiny bathroom to play in (in the bath), so as I hate waste I've invested in some cheap IKEA shower curtans to tarp that up with - walls and floor. They're only a couple of £, fold down small to store, provide a nice white backgound, are light and easy to tape in place, and hose down well. I've already reused them a number of times, and they have a little bit of very light staining from tomato based products, but have held up great so far. Post session the bulk of the mess goes into buckets and straight down the loo, and then everything (including me!) gets showered clean.
Obviously not a workable solution for everyone, and you do need somewhere to let them dry after cleaning, but works well for me
sloppyslime64 said: Taper your expecations, is there a differnce between 10 boxes of slime and 5. Generally no! Have an escape route to the bathroom/clean up area. Trash bags, use tarps/disposable things like that too!
Close to my approach
The more I use the more I waste I find that the less I use substance wise the more I can craft and create in the moment for example shaving foam mixed with shampoo without needing to use the entire bottle
