With the recent upgrades, and the site about to turn 25 I want to broach the topic of filtering on UMD...

I recently was made aware of a thread re gender filtering and while I disagree with the conclusions, it made me think about what else users might want to filter out.

For example, there is a producer on this site I have muted because their content makes my stomach churn. I don't want to specifically call them out but it will be pretty clear who I'm referring to. It is no exaggeration that seeing their stuff puts me off WAM for weeks on end. But fine, I have them muted... Except not fine because as soon as I look in the download store there it is.

So at the very least muting a user should mute them across the site, and at best there would be a stronger filter for anything using similar mess etc. If you can stop someone seeing genitalia they don't want then you can stop people seeing other things.

And to broaden this back out from something that could get filed in off topic or development... Perhaps there ought to be a discussion on exactly what kind of mess we want here. I went back and forward before posting this. I try to be true to a small L liberal mindset, but ultimately not offering a platform is not preventing from existing. People buy this stuff and perhaps I'm in a minority but it seems to me that meat and fish based mess is wayyyy closer bodily fluids than is acknowledged. I'm not a vegan or anything, and horses for courses, but is this the mainstream wam this site is intended for?

I'm sure a free speech argument could be invoked...but site ownership already removes discussion on non-profitable topics, and has had a long held ban on bodily fluids.

The TLDR is- there is wam I don't want to see and unless something happens to make sure I don't see it I'm going to have issues even just using the download store here.

In a sense, the Tags feature on the Downloads page let's you filter your interests to a degree, although there is no tag for "female model" or "male model." Of course, tags are never perfect - some other sites use "gay" to refer to men and women while other sites make distinctions between gay, lesbian, trans, etc. Too much filtering can also inadvertently leave out some videos you really would want to see - the more options, the more issues (as I would tell folks I was training in the use of a software module).

Overall, I find it's pretty easy to scan past downloads and videos that do not interest me.

I agree with the OP, there are things on here in much higher quantities these days that just make me want to close the window and abandon the site. It's so strange that you still can't have fake blood/gore (aka red slime, very obviously what it is not and pretty much a mainstream 'fun' substance) but you can have actual meat, fish, offal, pet food etc which is *literal* gore. The massive increase in regular savoury stuff too is making me gag so often it is draining any eroticism from the posts around it.

Like it or not, the UMD *is* changing what types of fetish it predominantly represents and that will be having consequences. Sweet food, fun, sensuality, retro slapstick and enthusiastic consent are giving way to BDSM, sensory torture stuff and borderline dangerous substances. It's all about "ordeals" now. And that's not why I'm here and I wouldn't want anybody to think it represented my kinks.

I don't see why "gross" and "savoury" tags, plus a tightening/enforcing of certain rules, would be so terrible a thing. The alternative is more and more people not being able to stomach what they see on here.

Whilst I sympathise with the OP and others, I can't help but feel like abandoning the UMD because of content you dislike appearing is a little extreme. This is no different than if you search on Google and a result you dislike coming up because it's incorrectly tagged or off topic you wouldn't use Google again?! I know I've had similar experiences with many a porn site in the past where there are completely unrelated clips showing up but I don't change to a new site to never return.
There is plenty of content on here that isn't to my liking but you don't see me complaining that there is too much "that doesn't float my boat". I just scroll on past and get on with it.
Also, there is a comment that red slime is not permitted but savoury mess such as tinned fish/pet food etc is. I'd like to add a couple of points to this. Red slime per se is not banned unless it is designed to imitate gore. Real gore is also not permitted and I would not include tinned food products (regardless of what's in the tins) as gore - or should we also ban all tinned red fruit as it looks too similar?!
Long story short, WAM is a very broad fetish and there will always be sub-fetishes within it that people like/dislike. If you think the world is better and brighter elsewhere then of course feel free to vote with your feet and find another site with more and better content - nobody is forcing you to stay. But I think the UMD is one of the best, if not the best, sites around for wam content, features and having an active community

Just scroll past it to the next thing...I mean I'm not into the whole "looking up" thing when someone gets slimed, and I'm not a fan of pies...but like I said, all I gotta do is...scroll onto the next thing and it doesn't ruin my day. Think you should just appreciate what we've got here. A lot of work goes into running and programming everything on this site and it's FREE so...really, why are you complaining?

I think having a "vegan" or meat free/vegetarian tag could be helpful for some people people but i have no idea how it could be realistically and simply implemented.

I've put vegan in quotes because i expect ensuring wam actually conforms to being vegan might be impossible even beyond food items, due to companies not being required the use of animal products in-terms of colourings and bindings etc. Also how often do people check that their cosmetics are vegan friendly that people use in their videos?

Who is responsible for making sure that the wam material is as "vegan" as it should be and how stringent should the rule be?

there might also be an issue of getting everyone's back catalogue updated since any use of eggs/dairy/honey might need re-tagging, will that be down to the mods or sellers?

Interesting idea. If filtering could be fine tuned I think it would improve people's experiences. However, I don't think it is attainable in any way that would appeal to me. As a broad example, I like female and coed WAM. Not into all male WAM, but I also don't want to miss any coed WAM that is mislabled, so I default to seeing everything. Which, in the end, is fine. I am not into mud, but I don't think I would filter out mud if I could-- what if I missed one of those rare mud vids that appeals to me?
It is weird, isn't it? Sometimes I will see a post that I think will be interesting, click on it, and it doesn't push my buttons. "What the hell!! They didn't even properly pie in her in the face!" or I will click on a post and see people asking the producer to add in things I don't want to see. "Screw that guy and what he wants to see-- just stick with the pies!" But in the end, I realize I am being ridiculous. Bottom line, I kind of agree with you and I think I know the producer you are talking about, but I think the best solution is eyeball discipline-- just do your best to avoid.

I think sometimes things we don't like can seem to be more prevalent than they actually are. But my and large, I just skip over things I'm not into, most of the time you can tell from the subject line of a promo before even clicking into the thread.

There's a fair bit out there that doesn't appeal to me, including several of the things the OP mentioned, but they clearly do appeal to some people. There's an old acronym in the kink world, YKINMKBYKIOK - which stands for "Your Kink Is Not My Kink But Your Kink Is OK" - a kind of "live and let live" approach.

As to filtering, the problem is that getting people to tag things properly, even just for the gender tagging, is already hard work. MM has things set up so that for a promo scene, the gender tag is set by what models are listed as in a scene. Include female models, sccene is tagged female. Include male models, scene is tagged male. Include both male and female models, scene is tagged coed. Sounds foolproof? What actually happens is male producers include themselves in a scene, but because they don't think of themselves as "a model" they don't set up a male model profile for themselves. So they include their female models, scene gets tagged female, and us admins get a wave of complaints about a guy showing up in the promos from people who have set their preferences to "Female, Strict", and expect such scenes to be tagged coed and filtered out of their feeds.

Adding any kind of mandatory substance or style tagging would only make that orders of magnitude worse, because different people will have very different ideas of what any given scene should be tagged. Example: I have a scene that's fully clothed, happy and fun, two girls consensually messing each other up tit for tat, and almost all custard and sweet stuff. Except it was the last scene of the day and there were two cans of tomato soup left over from the previous shoot that we didn't want to waste. So part way in each girl, who's already had her clothes filled with custard, gets a single can of soup poured in as a chaser. They did this completely willingly and happily, as a way of getting even messier and to avoid wasting something we'd already opened.

To me that's just very mild mixed mess. But to someone who utterly hates even the concept of savoury, that's probably gross. Wheras to me gross is more the "humiliation and fish-guts endurance" stuff.

There's no ban on red gunge that I'm aware of, I think it's just less commonly used as most gunge tend to be bright artificial colours, blue, green, bright pink. Colours that will stand out sharply as clearly "not what you'd usually see" on someone's clothes or body.

If there's one thing I've learned from 20 years on UMD, it's how deeply not interested I am in most other people's kinks. I don't like kink shaming and I don't want to yuck anyone else's yum, but when you think about it, the idea of a fetish-based message board is pretty counterproductive. You go into it expecting a wonderland of just your thing. And then you find out most of it is not only not your thing but so unlike your thing that you even start to question your thing.

At least if I go to a basketball forum and they're not talking about my favorite team, they're still talking about basketball and not, say, a hogtied gagged girl trying not to retch over an abundance of cat food.

Anyway, you need tags to filter and other people to abide by those tags. That's a lot of work and I can't see many people here going through with that. I think you should just focus on the main forums. If a producer posts something you want to see, go to their store through their post and not the main store. Maybe even keep a list of bookmarks of stores you like and just run through them periodically like you're reading the newspaper. The pool has expanded and and expanded pool is good for administration, so you can't expect them to help you shrink it.

I have seen a lot of discussions recently along this same theme of mess I don't want to see or mess I don't like. There is 1 simple rule that drives everything on this site. If it sells, producers make more. Not seeing the content you like, order a custom and allow it to be sold. There are more than a few styles of wam that have been born from customs.

Sure I would love to be able to scroll through without the unsolicited dick pic in the avatar. But then to be fair there would have to be a rule against unsolicited boob pics and unsolicited vagina pics. So I just scroll by and ignore.

Something that might be a happy medium is to put in place a system similar to what is in place with the blogs and stories. Where you can tag threads with the substances included and then add maybe a drop down near the selection of male/female/co-ed of accepted tags. Not so much let people invent tags like in the stories section, but a way to filter by type. But that would also add extra work for producers to make sure that their content was flagged as necessary. A lot like how the Download store has set tags that are used to filter by category.

A couple of points to add on 24 hours after my initial post-

1) I don't think the 'put up and shut up argument' has much validity. I know this is my subjective experience and that others differ. If I were running the site I would moderate differently. I have a right to say I don't like it, and to get a little philosophical about possibly a moral duty to myself and others to do so as well. I've been in therapy for major depression for almost 3 years, and one of the route causes I've been uncovering is not empowering myself to say what I believe. Being quiet causes a cognitive dissonance which can be damaging. Think of it like gaslighting yourself into not feeling what you feel.

2) The idea that building a filter or other solution to this problem is impossible is also not really true. At its core, a website is just a database with a fancy graphical interface. Databases are good at filtering data. An image, advert, or download is just data that can be categorized and filtered. There is without doubt a coding solution. Whether it is a coding priority is another question, and one which hopefully gets considered. Let's not forget UMD is a business, and if I was fronting the strategy I would have spun off the download store and social elements years ago so both could be focused on by dedicated teams and there are no compliance worries between the two.

3) Finally, I wanted to quickly note that the posts in this thread that express similar opinions have the most love. It's appreciated and hopefully shows there is a significant grouping who would like to see this issue taken seriously.

I'll get down from my soapbox now...

Debate and discussion is encouraged, and there's nothing wrong with making suggestions. But equally people who disagree may post alternative views. It's all good, and sometimes ideas may be used as the basis for stuff later on, or not, so worth making.


The problem isn't the coding, that's simple and easy. The problem, as I outlined in an earlier response above, is getting the human side to properly play ball with the data. Given the endless issues with people not gender tagging things properly, something you'd think would be really straightforward, experience would suggest anything more elaborate is just going to generate more heat than light.


I take it you're not aware this entire site is one single person's work? There are no teams, there is no corporation. It's all one single person, MM, working on their own for the last 25 years. It's one of the very last of the completely independent major commercial websites.

There is a small team of volunteer moderators, but we have no access to anything other than basic functions to edit or delete posts, move mis-posted things to correct forums, etc. All the code and database is MM's own hand-built work.


Bear in mind different people may use the "love" function in different ways. I usually "love" any post that I've replied to, as a way of alerting the person who posted it that I've made a reply. Doesn't necessarily mean I agree with their comments, but rather that I like that they've interacted. Also, lots of users already mentally filter by author and subject, so when your subject line is "Filtering out mess I don't want to see on UMD", you're going to get more views from people who are interested in filtering, and fewer from those who aren't. I've run into this issue trying to create genuinely neutral polls before now.

Edit: On re-reading the original post though, having a user muted also causing their scenes not to show up in the communal store would probably be a helpful thing.

We're a fetish board. The issue isn't free speech at all, it's technical ability.

I'm sure that if what you want was possible, it would be done, but if you want to have a lot of traffic on this site, treat everybody fairly, and include as many as possible so that the downloads sell -- having only what one person likes here is a very big ask.

This complaint is very old. When I first got online, in 2001, everybody on my mud boards was a man, and if they'd have had their way, male mud content would have been entirely banned. Thankfully, most board admins stood up against that.

Funny story: A while back, I got here, and started wondering what was wrong with UMD. It seemed kind of empty and there wasn't any producer material.

Then it hit me: Last time I was on, I'd hit the "trans" filter so I could browse all the crossdressers. And I'd forgotten to put it back.

That filter worked pretty well if you ask me.

Ultimately, you'll certainly get what you want. Some day. But that day isn't here yet. So maybe you can collect material when you're not in the mood and save it to your drive, to use when you are in the mood?

Okay so for me, I don't want to kink shame but women smoking is a massive turn off. Even if she is amazing and then gets an awesome pie or humiliation . I just don't find a woman smoking attractive but that's just me, and the beauty of the site. Most of those posts though I just save the messy pics, and leave the others to the ether.

I can understand and to a point applaud the notion (I never found eggs or beans a turn on and thus just ignore those posts), but it would be really hard to implement unless when uploading pics or vids, you have to check boxes for each substance used that would then create filterable tags, but I can see that being difficult for MM to implement and for the producers who do the guess the mess threads.

It's a really interesting discussion and while I also feel the same about most gross or savory content turning my stomach, I'm not sure the solution is super simple.

I've come to the conclusion in the last few years that some people have a completely different fetish to mine even under the larger banner of 'WAM'. I've talked to people who feel that WAM should be about humiliation and that is where they get their kicks. This idea of humiliating someone through mess also can seem to involve visibly disgusted or unwilling models. None of this idea gels with what I enjoy at all and would be an instant turn off. For me WAM involves fun and laughing and mess. Sure a 'punishment' for losing might involve mess, but it would be through fun and consensual jokes.

So how would filtering work in this case? Some people actually seem to like a bit of savory mixed in even in a fun setting (eg. old splosh content). Others might see a scene with slime/gunge and decide in their own minds if it is gross/smelly/etc. depending on whether they want to get off to humiliation or not. I could see perhaps that a tag for 'gross' WAM might be useful though. Fish, dog food or simulated shit are maybe something that should be opt-in.. I dunno..

What's the difference between filtering out 'nasty fish slime' content and filtering out content based on gender? On a technical level or on a moral level, I can't see one.

The problem isn't technical. Any half-competent coder could implement such a system in their sleep. The problem is getting people - the human element - to tag things correctly in the first place, and the inevitable tide of complaints and reports that are then generated when someone things that someone else hasn't tagged something correctly.

You'd think gender tagging would be fairly straightforward, after all most cis people already know if they're a boy or a girl, and it's only one thing to set. And yet a significant amount of moderator time is already taken up correcting misgendered stuff, either because we spot it ourselves or once complaints start to arrive.

TBH I'm someone who loves catagories and classifying things, I used to badger MM to add more tag options back in the days when you had to pick from a list of tags for every scene you released. But that system was withdrawn precisely because it was too unwelidly, and too rigid.

I could easily imagine a system where, when submitting a scene to the store, you'd have a list of stuff, even quite general stuff, for people to pick from, something like this:

This scene contains (tick all that apply):

Women
Men
Trans people
Sweet food
Savoury food (non animal)
Savoury food (fish, meat)
Gunge
Slime
Pies
Mud
Oil
Grease
Sinking in quicksand
Deliberately gross mess

Hardcore sexual content
Only vegan substances used
Only vegan clothing and footwear worn

And probably a bunch more categories. I'd love that and I'd happily use it for all my scenes and go back and re-classify all my old ones. Looks straightforward and all of those would just be boolean values in a database table for every scene in the catalog. The coding and SQL would be simple.

I just think, based on existing experuience, one of the side effects would be endless complaints about miscategorised things. I've only put one category for pie, should shaving foam and real pies be separate? Tins or no tins? Crust or no crust? In my catalog there are scenes where girls pie each other but not in the face - should those be tagged pie or not? Pie in the face purists may think differently.

Note "Gunge" and "Slime". I used to think those were the same, but last year learned that in fact they are radically different and there are people who'd fight wars and overthrow the state (only a slight exageration ) to enforce that difference if they had to. (for anyone curious, "gunge" is smooth and pleasant and comes in a rainbow of colours, "slime" is lumpy and humiliating and some believe should only ever be green). But a newbie producer might not realise and tag both, cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Edit: and having thought about it for a bit, that "Nudity" tag probably needs to be multiplied too, as there's a difference between "Nudity (glimpse of female breast)" and "Nudity (full frontal explicit looking-up-the-vaigina view)".

Edit2: And then on top of all that, there are the people who'll miss out on stuff because they search one of the filters that a producer should have tagged, and for whatever reason they haven't. So sales get missed due to human error.

It's a much more complex subject and task than it first appears. And given MM has just gone through one massive and complex upgrade, I doubt the time is right for another big change.

To me it is not all that complex. Look through the stories section. You are 100% correct with the issue being the human factor. It literally takes an extra 30 seconds to tick a box.

If you go to the download store, there are all kinds of categories that can be searched based on the kind of scene you are looking for. If it is categorized there, I am not sure why it would be such a hard thing to categorize the post when you make it on the forums.

My view is that UMD has outgrown the message board format both in terms of topics and member numbers. As social media users we are used to a personalised social experience that begins at our own profile and we network from there - rather than compete ferociously for the top spot on a board based format that now clearly struggles to find common interest.

When UMD started as a message board its interests and demographic were decidedly more narrow and there was very little in the way of content. There were also several other places to go.

The problem is that WAM is still a relatively tiny world in terms of its overall economic clout. So even with a virtual monopoly Derek and UMD haven't got the resources to make such cataclysmic changes even if we wanted to.

As I'm reading all these responses---- just remember that for a lot of us producers to stay afloat? We have to take customs now and again. I know I have sold two custom vids of me smoking a cigar---and I sold them because the pies were fantastic and I do enjoy a cigar now and again it also is others kink as the scenes were purchased. Not huge sellers but it's content.

I think I can speak for many peoducers when I say that customs are just about the only way to keep your site running and barely getting by, come tax time.
It's a labor of love and lots of fun but it's hard work. Sometimes we have to fill our stores with customs too, so that we can continue to produce what we want. I, personally, love any kind of mess. Kind of an equal opportunity wammer. I have my things I do not like and a very few things I won't do.but I will almost always? Try something once. Almost. Haha!

I understand that point of women doing customs especially for revenue. To be perfectly honest, I saw said cigar vid, was like oh what kind of mess, liked the coverage and saved the free non smoking pics and moved on. You are one of the models/producers on here who has done it all. I can't imagine there's a scenario you haven't been in for a vid, pic set or custom.

Whatever customs you take, I'll always look, that's why I follow you, but if it's something that doesn't appeal to me personally I'll just scroll past, but I will remain a supporter, and follower of your work.

I think the main point OP was making was that certain things he sees are making him actually ill. Be it substance used, or context of situation. Which I can understand. Based on deductive reasoning, I believe I know who and what substance he is referring, and it as well is not my cup of tea, but I digress, most people will just scroll by or mute the user and that would be the end. I think an open discussion about labeling content and proper filter implementation is prudent especially in this day and age of how social media, and how we as a society expect our personal online experiences to be tailored (Look at Facebook, Twitter, and Pintrest etc.) Is it realistic to expect everyone to properly adhere to it? No.

I've honestly noticed the strict filter is sort of useless if people do not label their posts accordingly. I am bisexual (Guess I just came out lol) especially when it comes to mess. So some days it's set to women only, some days men, some days coed. I notice when I have it on women, there are a bit of opposite gendered content that creeps through. 1/10 post ratio. Not ridiculous but it happens. I mostly just ignore and move on, but whenever you add sex or sexual attraction to a situation where people have to follow directions, men and some women tend to get over excited, and think with their privates.
