The other day I saw references to pieings of Marlo Thomas and Raquel Welch on the Mike Douglas show. This reminded me of Hurley Coward's mention, in his list of legendary lost pie clips, of Deidre Hall getting pied on the Mike Douglas show, which I mentioned in the post linked above (which focused on the probable hoax of Marlo and Raquel also getting pied on the show).
I guess I was hoping against hope that somebody who actually saw the Deidre Hall pieing might come forward and describe their memories of it. SOMEBODY saw it and reported it to Hurley, but that person could've easily missed my post, which didn't mention Ms. Hall in the title. Or he may not be on the UMD at all -- hell, he might not even be alive anymore (that list was mostly compiled in the 90s, from what I understand.)
In any event, if anyone out there saw this pieing, I urge you to please share your memories of it with us.
I'm adding some pics of Deidre from roughly the time of when she would've been pied -- i.e. the 70s. I couldn't really find any other pics of her from that decade beyond stuff from Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, but if anybody else has other 70s pics of her -- or great pics of her from any decade -- please add them to this thread.
I saw it! I was a kid in the 70's, and I was pissed because I turned away when it happened, and all I saw was her wiping it off. She was guest ho-host for the week, and she was pied at the end of the last show of the week.
Thanks for replying, Scooter! Do you have any memory of how she took it (did she seem pissed? amused? etc) Or what she was wearing? Any sense of whether it was a true surprise for her or whether she seemed in on it?
I talked with Hurley about sightings of this clip back in the '90s, when Deidra Hall was a soap star who was still stunning looking. I'm glad to see Scooterpie saw the clip (I know that feeling of looking away at the wrong moment), and I think there were others that mentioned seeing it, and I think Hurley found a written reference to it. Pies were a semi common thing on the Mike Douglas show, usually getting male guests like Dom Deloise and Mike Douglas.
I do recall seeing a retrospective highlight Mike Douglas Show around (1979) where they showed a montage of pie hits, where I recognized Helen Reddy getting pied nicely (she was apparently pied on some other shows also, I read), but didn't catch Deidre there.
I don't recall what she was wearing, but I absolutely recall her laughing about it. Also, the pie was fluffy, and it was great coverage, if I recall correctly. The pie was kind of like a shaving cream texture.
OK. This is a Holy Grail clip for me -- back around 1977 give or take a year, I saw a pie clip on Mike Douglas. I NEVER watched Mike Douglas because I was a kid and why the hell would you watch Mike Douglas if you were a kid. BUT, even at that young age, I had a thing for pretty females getting pied. I was at a family function and Mike Douglas was on, so... So, the skit, as I remember it: Mike is a "good" cowboy in a saloon-- he wears white. A "bad" cowboy enters the saloon. He wears black. My memory tells me it is Paul Anka (who the hell knows really, the memory is a tricky thing). Anyway, there is a sexy barmaid (or saloonmaid). Dressed appropriately in skimpy outfit. In my memory she looks like Blair from the Facts of Life, but that can't be right based on the date. So, I am now convinced it is Deidre Hall . Why? Because she was apparently pied on Mike Douglas Show and she kinda looks like Blair from Facts of Life. I search Youtube regularly for this scene (e.g., "Mike Douglas" "Deidre Hall"). In the end, I am probably wrong (chances are it is some random, hot, blonde actress). Mike is trying to defeat the bad cowboy. He does this by taking whatever the hot saloon girl hands him and tries to clobber him appropriately. It always backfires. So, for example, if she hands him one of those bombs that looks like a bowling ball with a fuse coming out of it, Mike would end up being blown up. In the end hot chick hands Mike a pie. He looks at Anka -- who has been defeating him all along, turning every weapon Mike has against him-- then he looks at hot saloon girl (let's call her Deidre). So what does Mike do? He lets Deidre have it. POW, Pies her in the face with the pie she just handed him. Oh, how I want to see this clip again! I know the place I watched it and who was with me. Memories that run deeper than a fetish. If ANYONE remembers this clip, please speak out. I fear I dreamed it, but it seems pretty real. Would PROBABLY pay money to see it again. You young kids have NO idea how it was back in the pre-internet era. We found our WAM where we could and we were happy about it and we didn't complain (who would listen).
Probably this one then. Deidre Hall was on several episodes in 1978-79, but all with guest hosts except this one.
March 3, 1978 Episode 117 3/3/78 Mike's guests are actor Mike Connors, Days of Our Lives stars Jed Allan and Deidre Hall, comedian Phil Foster and soul group Rose Royce.
That said, she could be in another episode not cataloged online.
You guys need to pursue other avenues. At this point, you need to assume that full Mike Douglas episodes are NOT showing up on YT anytime soon, so try to find collectors who have episodes and see if they'll share or sell this one. (Or if they know of other Deidre appearances.)
It sounds like there were probably multiple female pieings on the show over the many (MANY) years it was on..... but most were never even witnessed so finding them now is proverbial "needle in haystack" territory. (Oh and don't believe a word you read in YouTube comments.... Actual video proof or it didn't happen.)
So in looking around for more info on this pieing, I discovered an interesting related story.
There is an actress named Jane Elliot who played the villainess Cleopatra on Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. Like Hall, she would go on to achieve much more lasting fame in a long-running role on a daytime soap; in Elliot's case, it was General Hospital.
Well, it turns out Deidre Hall actually gave Jane a pie in the face on the very first day they met on set, taking her by complete surprise with this prank. (Hall had asked the director to trick her into thinking she was doing a voice over when in fact it was just a set up for her creaming.) Immediately after the pie hit her, Elliot grabbed Hall and they fell to the floor in a tussle of comedic wrestling. The two quickly became best friends, which they apparently remain to this day, over 40 years later.
Anyway, here are some pics of Jane Elliott as Cleopatra, as well as some other photos of her from the era, spanning from the very late 60s (playing a nun in the final Elvis movie) to the late 70s (when she began on General Hospital). Not as striking as Hall, of course, but still a good-looking woman. Too bad her pieing was not filmed for posterity!
Here are some vidcaps of Deidre nearly copping in a pie in the puss on Days of Our Lives. It's a skillful adaptation of a classic storyline straight out of Ancient Greek drama -- beautiful psychotherapist Clytemnestra brings redundant second chocolate cream pie to family gathering; her husband Agamemnon, intent on getting revenge on her for some earlier embarrassment she caused him, attempts to smash said chocolate pie into her classically beautiful features. Cly does her best to talk her way out of a very messy fate, but because this is a Greek story, it's a tragedy, of course, and so there's a deus ex machina and things don't go quite as planned...
Sorry about the lack of order in the way these pics displayed. They were both named and uploaded in sequence, so I have no idea why they're all so jumbled up....
