No hating here! Nobody's happier than me to see Barbara FINALLY get well-pied. But man we have to jump through some hoops to get there, specifically the last show: 1) Barbara gets question wrong. 2) Her guy picks up the pie and is about to pie her, when 3) Barb picks a pie off the floor and PIES THE GUY instead. 4) Guy just stands there, stunned, while the other guys raise their hands in protest. 5) One guy weakly slaps a pie on top of her head and she recoils from that, then 6) Barb falls down and the hosts decide, "Oh, she's suffered enough...."
So yes, on a gameshow where they have pied a guy into obliteration for "ducking" a pie... And another for "popping a slime balloon wrong" on a girl.... Barbara probably SHOULD get messed up for, you know, pieing the guy who was supposed to pie her and getting away scot-free.
The fact that I was pretty sure this show *would* let her get away "scot-free" tells you all you need to know about the randomness and frustration level of it week-to-week. Heck, last week one of the "twins" got the question right... and then pied himself anyway?!? The hot girl who got BOTH questions wrong wound up cleaner than him. :-S
My theory on Braziallian game shows is that they shoot several episodes a day. Therefore the women try to avoid the mess so they don't have to keep redoing there hair. Which is why early episodes of any of the Braziallian gameshows the women are cool with the mess, but as the show progresses they get more and more reluctant.
Anyway , it's cool Barbara took the pies. Now if only the female host would take some lol.
CM actually tapes one episode a week. My theory is those pies have so much food coloring added to them, or something that really turns the face and hair a different color, and is hard to fix. Being models they probably take that stuff pretty seriously.
My insane theory is that they're women, beautiful ones at that, and that women, particularly beautiful image-obsessed ones, actually do not care to have pies smeared all over their faces and hair making them look ridiculous. It's almost as if vain young women who have dedicated their lives to beauty and their image would rather always look stunning and attractive and not be made to look like a clownish buffoon for other people's amusement.
^^That's probably fair, although... In a country where literally EVERY SINGLE show on their networks features super-hot female co-hosts, or sidekicks, or spokesmodels... It seems weird that you would take the one job that almost guarantees you'll get messy every week. And then have issues with GETTING MESSY EVERY WEEK.
But at the same time, I get that it's a foot in the door for most of these models, and I don't blame them for trying to execute a lot of behind-the-scenes moves to try to weasel out of the mess... Once they've secured a spot on the show.
Interestingly enough, almost ALL the guys are male models, with quite a few gay ones, so the whole "image-obsessed" argument could apply to them as well. The "twins" have definitely become the celebrities on this show, despite (or because of?) their willingness to "look like a clownish buffoon for other people's amusement" week in and week out. (Seriously, one of the twins has already taken more pies on this show than ANY female "she's a WAMmer" celebrity you could name... More than Lucille Ball, Cybil Shepherd, AND Sarah Shahi combined....)
gness7 said: I think we're overthinking things. It's probably the same song that's been sung for generations: audiences find it funnier when men are the targets of physical comedy than women. WAMmers have been complaining about that phenomenon in North American and European media since before the UMD. Why wouldn't it be the same other places in the world?
I commented in the last thread that 2 men must be pied for every 1 woman pied for general audiences to be comedically entertained. If two women were pied for every man pied general audiences might find that cruel not comical.
Indeed the next two episodes clocked in at 2 to 1 precisely.
I also mentioned that the supposed imbalance of women being pied in the early episodes (that was the impetus for rearranging the show in their favor) simply did NOT exist.
18 men were pied and 18 women were pied in the first 5 episodes. Yet many (myself included) wrongly believed that the men were destroying the women. Our brains (or some other organ) deceived us.
The impact of a beautiful young women dressed to tease receiving a monster pie-ing reverberates in the minds of viewers many magnitudes higher than a goofball dude wearing jeans and t-shirt taking the same.
There's a thin line between comedy and cruelty with general audiences when humiliation is being dished out.

So, ummmm, how do you know that many of the male models are gay, and more importantly, why is it germane to bring that up here? You've done this a few times before when talking about the CM male models, and I hope you have a good reason for it. The implication in this case is that gay males are particularly image-obsessed.
I acknowledge the vanity aspect of the female models playing a role in the avoidance of getting messy (or as messy as the guys)....guys are supposed to be less concerned with their appearance, in general...and guys often do "dirty" jobs...but we know that male vanity exists, as well.....but slapstick in the form of mess is a direct "attack" on physical appearance vanity, and thus we are more shocked to see a beautiful female suddenly messed up....this is also the primary appeal to me of female slapstick = shock comedy...especially on one perceived as vain or haughty or stuck up (too pretty to be normal; above getting messy).
But if one is arguing that a guy getting messy is FUNNIER than a gal getting messy, then Ernie Kovac's famous quote ('It's funnier when a pretty girl gets hit with a pie instead of a fat cop.") is wrong.....but I don't think so....one can call it "cruel" to pie or gunge a pretty girl (all done up in hair, makeup and fancy clothes)...but this is an example of saliromania (or salirophilia) which is enjoyment in seeing others (particularly those we deem more attractive or of higher social status) get soiled, dirty, messy, etc.....quite apart from any erotic thrill...I note that when a pretty girl gets pied or slimed on CM, there's always a cut away to the audience showing many young females laughing and applauding (with maybe one or two looking "shocked")...granted, the audience is mostly females, but their reaction is still genuine (and presumably not prompted by the director or "laugh" signs)...
In fact, I would argue that the producers of the show are well aware of this and enjoy seeing the females get messy...recall how in the original shows (shown in clips here on the umd), whenever a female got pied, the male host would call them over and try to "interview" her briefly, keeping her pie covered face on camera longer than normal (compared to the guys)....the female would typically make some funny comment and there would be laughs again and she would go back in line...as if to say, see, it's all in good fun and no one is being "cruelly" targeted, or something...don't recall this happening with the guys...the special treatment post pieing was a way of acknowledging that pretty females getting messy (as a guy would) is unusual/unique and special.
Comedy is when it happens to someone else. Tragedy is when it happens to you.
But it's not comic if it looks like it causes serious harm. So a man taking a pratfall is funny because men are meant to be able to shrug that sort of thing off - that's the embedded expectation from mass media. Women less so as it looks like abuse.
Therefore, when it comes to the long-delayed humiliation of a bully, for a woman it works best if it is something messy, rather than if it's being hit by a plank of wood on the bonce.
Several months ago a male contestant ducked underneath a pie thrown at his face. He was punished the next episode with two pies.
The male apparently was NOT told he was going to be penalized until that very moment. He appeared genuinely taken aback.
I sincerely hope that Barbara is caught off guard as well. I hope she wasn't informed prior to the taping that she was going to receive a double pie penalty.
It will add a hundred amps of excitement if she has to process her impending punishment in a few seconds as opposed to having had time to mentally prepare. It should be relatively easy to tell if she's genuinely caught off guard.
It should be emphasized that Barbara loathes getting messy more than any of the other women. By a wide margin.
Barbara is the contestant I highlighted a month ago who made a "secret" agreement with a least one of the males never to receive a pie, only a balloon. She screamed and yelled at him hysterically for even THINKING of pie-ing her.
The few pies she has taken have been very gentle and strictly limited to her face. In fact, in several instances you can see her talking under her breath to the males in the seconds before she receives the pie. She is quite clearly asking (instructing!) them not to extend the pie-ing into her hair. And they don't.
Barbara has destroyed the men with pies with reckless abandon for several months with the comfort of believing she would forever be immune from such a treatment.
If you like "revenge" pie-ings where the "bad girl" who almost always manages to stay clean finally GETS IT this should be the pie-ing you've been waiting for.

There is definitely some vaildity to this point....cos as Lenny and I can attest, we often used pies of a similar recipe to the CM pie mixture with heavy food coloring dyes, and on some shoots we had some blonde haired models yelling at us cos their hair had been tinted pink or green and was not initially coming out when they were showering in my garden. But then "Dawn" came to the rescue....and Dawn cleaning liquid works just as well at cleaning off oily mess from our models as it does at cleaning other forms of wildlife that get caught up in oil slicks on the beach. So...always bring "Dawn" to your messy shoots.

Oh Christ...the professionally offended have arrived!
caught this one live on a whim and oh wow, her pieing was absurd. initially it was just the yellow but another male cast member grabbed a pink one to join in on the fun. and, in classic barbara fashion, she doesn't wipe any of the pie off until she walks off the main stage area.

Barbara lost a question early in the show and took a pink pie to the face. It was a ridiculously gentle and respectful pie-ing that carefully avoided her hair. She absolutely hated it.
Near the end of the segment Barbara went to the podium for a second question. She answered first but the hosts stopped her in her tracks. They promptly showed a video replay of her cheating incident from last week.
They dragged out announcing her penalty for a long minute with an unfunny video before declaring that she must receive two pies as a penalty. We got to see her squirm with discomfort as she slowly sensed what was coming. (This was almost as entertaining as the pie-ing).
Barbara was completely caught off guard. She clearly didn't have any idea a two pie penalty was coming until that very moment (as I speculated earlier). She was not tipped off prior to the taping of the show. A moment this "real" is an extreme rarity, cherish it.
Barbara was clearly upset and pissed off. After seven months of being Harry Houdini and escaping mess after mess she was finally cornered.
Two males each ground a pie into her. One into her face. The other into her hair. She was shellacked, coated and humiliated.
She clearly hated the pie-ing and was completely embarrassed.
The only complaint is that the camera-man had a second opportunity to zoom and failed to capture it. There was an initial up close shot but it lasted only a few seconds. Most of the girls turn around and run back towards the towels. Barbara actually faced forward for an unusual amount of time. But the cameraman only provided a long distance shot. He should be fired.
All in all this was a top tier scene. A very rare moment in pie-history. All the planets aligned.
The rest of the show, however, was largely a waste of time.
Oh, there was one other top-notch female pie-ing but the cameraman again did a terrible job capturing it.
yes, great double pieing, but with only a quick glimpse of her before (already pied)....still great, completely plastered....there was another good (dingle) pieing prior to this: a wrap-around pieing...complete facial coverage...
Don't blame the camera man!!! Blame the TD (technical director)..he's the one calling the shots during the taping...plus, the whole show is edited for time after taping...there are probably three to four cameras on the set, at least one is assigned close-ups.

There's a solid two minutes of her before the double pieing, Matheus was simply editing it down to the bare essentials. You can watch the entire thing if you so desire.
Her earlier pieing was incredibly gentle (I don't think she even bothered to wipe anything, as the hit was THAT weak) which makes me think the guy was "in" on this surprise pieing and went easy the first time. Who knows. I will say, literally every other pieing she's taken on this show (before that weak one) has been fantastic. I dunno... She might be a diva on set who (as CU says) tries to avoid the pies whenever possible, but her ACTUAL pieings are better than almost any I've ever seen on any mainstream gameshow ever. She doesn't move post-pie, she doesn't wipe right away, and she often acts like she enjoys it. The way she gets up without even bothering to wipe (with the host "assisting" her) is pure gold.
They do edit after the fact. Watch the entire show and they cut from when she's standing but still completely covered, to one of the other girls already wiping her face with a towel, and then another cut to where she's wiped off a lot. I give them credit for shooting some aftermath, but this was definitely an instance where a "true" live broadcast would've been preferable.
FBOW, this show can be the greatest or worst thing ever on an almost week-to-week basis. Last week had literally nothing of value.... This week, certainly one of the best CMs from the last (mostly frustrating) few months.
Whether it's intentional or not, this week had pretty much "pie equality" for both genders. Which is a nice change of pace... I hope this trend of super-gentle pieings doesn't continue tho. (Two pieings were SO weak they didn't even make Matheus' edit!)
I'm sure CU will provide a detailed four-paragraph breakdown in far more detail tho.
^^ This. I'm all for celebrating the glory that IS Barbara, The Woman Who Hates Getting Pied But Then Does A Fantastic Job Every Time She Does Get Pied. (And the pink one from 2 weeks back was awesome too...)
PM, you seem to delight in engaging me (or, less charitably, "baiting me") on a semi-regular basis here lately. Since it wasn't the topic of the thread, I chose to let it go. But since you're MAKING it an issue: --On the TG board, we were discussing this show back when it first started. (Long before the UMD really cared.) Several guys confirmed that most of the male cast then was gay, based on their social media profiles and such. (One guy spoke Portuguese so I took his word.) --I have no proof as I don't follow their IG & Twitter accounts, or really care about them much either way. So if you need to challenge that assumption, I won't argue. Whatever makes you happy. --Most of that cast has since moved on. "Beardy guy," as I call him, is still there, and I believe he was confirmed as gay, but again, no real proof... Nor does it really matter. --I'm fairly sure the "twins" are straight, as the show keeps trying to link them to some of the female cast members (heart-eyes animations and such) and, of course, the show is using them to appeal to the mostly female fanbase.
But gay or straight or whatever, most of the guys ARE male models. Whether they're "successful" or just wannabe's is debatable, but the show's own social media tries very hard to promote its cast (both male and female) this way, with glamour shots of individual cast members that aren't related to actual show tapings. I can also tell you from working with photographers that your typical male model is ABSOLUTELY as image-concerned as a typical female model.
That's all. Like all our arguments about why the show is "biased" a certain way, it's complete speculation since none of us knows what's really going on behind the scenes.
Thank you very much brother Matheus for your excellent work! Much appreciated!
I must send you a warning.
Another YouTube channel that provided CM pie clips was removed a couple weeks ago. (The channel also contained several hundred clips of assorted foreign television shows).
I urge you to make backups of all your videos so they are not forever lost in an instant.

Your interpretation of why Barbara freezes after her pie-ings and doesn't immediately attempt to clean the pie from her face is the opposite of my interpretation.
I think she has concluded that attempting to wipe the pie away may smear it further over her face and make the coverage worse.
Once the pie is on your hands you can't get it off. Attempting to "clean" yourself only spreads the damage.
We've seen many of the female contestants accidentally wipe the pie into their hair attempting to clean their face. (The contestants are quickly learning that the only direction to wipe is DOWN).
In the immediate aftermath of the pie-ing it's nearly impossible for the victim to know if a big glob of pie is hanging from their face or if the damage is relatively light. In short, it's hard for the victim to know what to do to mitigate the mess while even more strongly desiring not to make it worse (especially the women).
Wiping the pie away may also be seen as a subconscious concession that you were just humiliated. It draws further attention to you.
In fictional movies and television shows when an actress falls in a mud puddle she usually flails wildly as she tries to clean herself. These comical displays further highlight and draw attention to the humiliation. (That's why the actresses do them!)
Many of the female contestants have obviously concluded the best strategy is to head back to the towels instead of engaging in histrionics which only draws closer attention or attempt to clean themselves which usually backfires.
Based on how strongly Barbara attempts to evade mess every episode I have nearly full faith that the explanation I've provided applies.
