I rarely use cream other than on my naked body because it just makes clothes smell forever! Or you could try soaking it in lemon juice. Lots of lemon juice might just get rid of the smell!
I had similar problems with clothes in the past after using milk products. It smelled forever and especially when it became wet again. I found out that the reason for this were lactic acid bacteria. You have to wash your clothes at a high temperature above 60 degree Celsius. I washed some of mine at 95 degree Celsius, because some clothes like jeans will somehow resist more than a thinner material.
The bacteria will die above a specific temperature and the smell will vanish, if you just wash your clothes at a lower temp. the population of the bacteria will increase because of the good environment and the smell will increase, too.
any shower gel with real lemon juice in it is great for getting the lingering oily film and creamy stank off yourself and out of hair too. I use original source lemon & tea tree - brilliant stuff. Tesco does a 95p large bottle of lemon juice and I put about half the bottle in for a wash of custardy stuff. Juice and zest of one lemon works well too. Even a 40c wash will come out fine.
If no lemons available, three washes at 60c with ridiculous amounts of powder, or if it (the fabric) will take it, one cool wash to get the worst off followed by a 90c wash with tons of powder .
white items can go in a bucket of watered down bleach then have a 60c wash
If its bacteria that causes the smell try a product called McNett Mirazyme. I use it on my wetsuit when it starts to smell and it works a treat. Let me know how you go.

The washing powder can maybe reduce the population of those little guys, but all temperatures under a critical level will result in a regeneration of them.
You can kill them with high temperature or with acid or alkaline products. All tips like using lemon juice or vinegar are related to acid. So by changing the Ph-value of the environment in which the bacteria life to a critical level (to an acid or alkaline level), they will die. If you use acids pay attention to the quantity you use, otherwise you can harm your sealing of your washing machine, that could result in an unplanned wet session.
In my opinion the quantity of powder is not important for the reduction of the bacteria.

There is a "green" cleaning agent (spray) made with chlorophyll, great for cleaning up surfaces afterwards (the chlorophyll absorbs the odors); you might try 'pre-treating' the clothing with the chlorophyll and then hand washing washing it in a sink with the same cleaner....then thorough rinse (may need to repeat)....sorry, don't know the brand name off-hand.
