Not sure if this counts but I like WAM as comeuppance (e.g. Main protagonist, snooty or annoying person falls in mud) and also as forfeits for losing a game.

Depends on the situation. I do like WAM as a punishment. I actually have plans with a lady friend soon. We have a favorite AirBnB we like to stay at to get away from everything. It's far enough away from anyone else (and a good refuge from coronavirus) that you can do whatever you want without anyone hearing or seeing you. She has a few "kinks" she's into (mainly BDSM) and a few she just wants to try. I have a very odd relationship with the idea of WAM as a punishment! Even the feelings of humiliation - if they're what I want, how much of a punishment can it really be?

I am similar to you in some ways. I love it when someone messes me up in a dominant way i.e. they are enjoying it regardless of how I'm reacting. If you consider that being punished with slime for saying "I don't know" or performing the secret slime action, then sure, punishment is a necessity. But I don't know if punishment is the right word for that.

I don't truly see it as a punishment to say to a woman I want to make you disgustingly filthy.
I want the ' victim' to be willing to be messed up , even if it is my fetish, and not theirs.
I would never use WAM as either a punishment or a reward in a relationship.

Just to clarify: the punishment delivered would of course be consensual. That said, those points about humiliation, ceding of control, submission, and loss of dignity go right to the heart of the question.
Perhaps the link here between punishment and WAM lies in the inevitability of both? But your answer highlights the tricky issue of what it means to want discipline / punishment / humiliation / being trashed and destroyed by pies / gunge / mess.
Humiliation is, after all, a form of -- or part of -- punishment.
Humiliation may not even be the correct word, for what I enjoy seeing.

I love the revenge & punishment aspects of getting messy. Punishment is a story that you can be really creative with. I quite like the job interview scenes, where the punishment is disguised as a 'test' for how badly they want the job. I am personally not a great fan of legitimate fear in sploshing because it should ultimately be slapstick (imho). There is also something incredibly hot when the women really, really loves the punishment when it happens.
