For anyone shooting outdoors in natural mud, it'd be potentially dangerous to get any of it inside someone's mouth, as that could open a route to all kinds of infection. It's reasonably safe to play in mud, even slightly contaminated mud, as long as you avoid ingesting any of it. As soon as it gets inside any body openings, the risk factor increases massively.
Here in the UK there's currently a major scandal about how much raw sewage the water companies are dumping into rivers, there isn't anywhere that's unaffected. This means that potentially at least, there's a risk of sewage contamination in all rivers and their banks, and in the sea and beaches. People have immune systems, we evolved to survive dirty environments, so as long as the contaminants are only trace amounts, it's usually not a problem - but keeping it out of mouths, noses, and other body openings, is just good policy.

There are people here who have done this, and on a visual level for mud kinksters it can be very appealing and wild to see, but for the reasons stated I imagine the examples are few and far between.
We have done a few mud shoots that has mud in mouth scenes.

It is best to restrict putting mud in the mouth to pottery clay or the equivalent of pottery clay found at certain quarries provided there is no possibly stagnant water associated with it. Note that getting all the clay out of one's mouth takes a while so maybe consider not doing this except when you're due for a teeth cleaning appointment!...

My opinion on mud is one of neagtivity but curiosity. I'd love to get muddy. On the other end of the spectrum is the fact that the mud in my area is contaiminated with algie but also raw sewage I found out. So... ew. Also shame on my local government.
Also suspect my Autism plays a role. Both in the curiosity part, but also in the neagtive part. Autism and WAM for me goes hand in hand. The texture, smell and taste I guess would be very different to other substances I have used.

I once ended up in a bit of mud play with a microbiologist while out mountain biking and we both agreed to keep the mud well away from nose, mouth, ears, eyes etc. for reasons such as this!
