I've been using Xanthan Gum to make slime and it works very well. You can add tempura paint to it and it may be mixed with other substances as well.
So basically you need to mix xanthan gum with water which is harder than it sounds. The xanthan gum wants to ball up into lumps and not mix, as the water surrounds the powder and creates little balls of goo with dry powder inside. To overcome this, you just need a food processor with a sharp blade at the bottom to slice through the lumps. It works well and within a minute or less you have a quantity of nice slime. Because of this, I've only been mixing it for between 30 and 60 seconds for a litre-sized pitcher of slime.
Here is why I'm posting: Has anyone who uses this method experimented with letting it mix for longer periods of time? I saw a video on YouTube where a factory was using it and showed the thickness after one minute, two minutes, and then five minutes of mixing. It was far thicker after five minutes, meaning you can use less of it, or you can make thicker slime.
Is anyone here using xanthan gum and do you blend yours for five minutes? Does it make a difference? I plan to try this soon and will post my results.
Yes it can be a bit of a pain to mix I normally use a hand blender for about a minute. I then leave it for 15-30mins and it thickens a bit. I colour it with a squirt of children's poster paint I will need to try mixing longer
Personal I prefer a methyl cellulose gunge but xanthan is cheap and readily available in UK supermarkets

Apparently, you can use glycerine instead of water and it mixes easily, but again, it adds to the cost and I'm trying to make great gunge on a budget.
First thing I do is mix the xanthan powder with cooking oil in a bowl. Enough oil to make a pourable mixture. Then I add it to water using an emersion blender, pouring the xanthan/oil right into the blender blades. 5 minutes is plenty of time. Typically I use about 110g of xanthan for 10L of water. The oil it the key, I use the same for mixing cmc and it makes life much easier.
I have had the same issues with xanthan gum. I blend it in a blender then add it to larger water. Still it isn't perfect and it has a weird smell. But man it looks and feels great. Is there a way to get rid of that smell?
I came across this recipe to make Xanthan based lube a couple of years ago and it is relatively easy to make Just start off with vegetable glycerine, add a dash of xanthan gum stir until dissolved and then add 2 to 4 parts water and mix No need for blenders or heating or cooking , no lumps in the end as long as you only use a dash of xanthan Video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xz5Rk-0RvQ

I believe so since xanthan and veg glycerine are both food products but as mentioned above it does smell weird and is probably not the most pleasant taste but I think it should be fine but always try it out first
I think maybe adding some food flavouring might help enhance its appeal
