I'd like to try whipped cream pies again but last time, found there was a terrible smell afterwards that even the usual post mess showering didn't remove
I was able to get it off eventually but I was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this and what they did
I know Candy Custard used to advise that lemon juice is very effective for getting rid of dairy residue smells - though be careful if using it on yourself (as opposed to washing clothes) and don't let it get in your eyes, stings.
I have experienced it, and it's awful. That smell can stick in your nose for quite a while. I would recommend staying away from that substance if you can avoid it. I'm not sure what alternatives you have there in Ireland, but if there is something non-dairy you can try, I would.
Top tip when it comes to whipped cream - use coolwhip (or any other dairy-free/vegan alternatives). This avoids the lingering stale milk smell you mention below
I have used Elmlea Double Cream Alternative which is made from buttermilk and vegetable oil. It whisks up as expected and has little to no smell afterwards.

Would a lemon or citrus shower gel also be effective I wonder?
Cool whip and other non-dairy "whipped topping" is never going to give the sour milk smell of actual dairy products. Even melted ice cream is pretty gross smelling after a while.
You can play with cool whip for about 30 minutes of body to body (to body to body..) contact and it ends up breaking down into what feels like suntan lotion. Makes sense - it is an edible oil product. No smell after all that time, other than the vanilla and sugar smells.

It's a continual source of frustration that Cool Whip isn't available on this side of the Atlantic - you'd think sales to wammers alone would make it a profitable venture!
I find that the UHT squirty cream that isn't sold in fridges doesn't have the same smell afterwards, probably because the uht process kills off all the bacteria.
I've seen some producers recommend busy washing soap as it cuts the grease out faster. But I've switched to cool whip from heavy cream. I've never had issue w me smelling but the smell stays in our noses for up to several days. I would just use several body wash rinses and shampoo and lots of conditioner for our hair. But coool whip is way better just I feel like when I'd buy a gallon of heavy cream and mix in some stuff to thicken it I'd get so much more pies filled vs 4 big cool whip containers
One thing I've found works well is non dairy whipped cream. I found some very nice coconut flavored whipped cream that left behind nothing but a pleasant vanilla and coconut smell.
