It looks like it might be a sponge cake made in a torte pan. It's likely more expensive, but if you want to use cake as a pie "tin", Sam's has 48, 5" un-iced cakes for $34. I think splitting each in two would make for a good substitute.

They're our only native dessert delivery system suitable for slapstick that might actually exist in a real bakery and can be filled with anything and hold together.
They come ready made in 6" & 12" sizes. We use them almost exclusively now as tin-free projectiles. The're great for smushing (because they're soft sponge) and 2 x 12" can cover an entire head in one go.
Yep, flan base. You can get pie crusts in the UK but they are incredibly fragile, half of them break up when you try and get them out of their tins, so you then have to use them with the tin on, and the other half are liable to fall apart when the models try and pick them up to use. Flan bases on the other hand tend to be reliable and hold together really well until the models deliberately mash them on each other.
We've even had cases where a 6-inch flan base has survived being thrown, fully laden with custard and squirty cream, been picked up off the floor almost undamaged, re-filled, and thrown again - attached pic is of one bouncing off Chastity having delivered its load of mess in a direct hit to her face and hair.
Ah yes, the flan case has become a favourite of mine in recent years. Annoyingly they've stopped making the little ones as far as I've seen. Here is Kacie and me modelling some the other day
