Is there a standard gunge tank? We have multiple tanks and they all have different capacities, with the biggest currently holding 1500 litres and the smallest holding 20-40 litres in two tanks (20 litres in each tank) for two separate gungings, we have another that holds 30 litres, so I honestly think it depends on the tank!
So this might be something I can shed some light on. The actual quantity isn't really the concern, it's the size of the hole it's going through (oo-er).
If you've got a big reservoir of 100 liters for example abd the exit hole is 20mm it'll take ages to drain down and the flow rate won't provide a good enough flow for good coverage.
Alternatively a big hole with a small capacity will give a sudden drop splat with not much coverage either.
When I designed my gunge tank valve I tried to find an optimum size for good flow. Which I found to be about 86mm. In the demo videos you can see that we get good coverage with just 10 liters of gunge. In those examples we used messy supplies standard gunge mixed as specified by the manufacturers.

1500 litres sounds huge! Is that a dunk tank (for the person to drop into) rather than an overhead tank?

Actually that's a really good point, I sometimes forget the terminology is interchangeable.

Viscosity of gunge is also needed to be taken onto account as obviously it will flow slower.
Thank you all for the replies, especially The_Gungetank_Maker I am referring to a set up where the gunge falls from overhead, not a dunk tank. Been toying with the idea of making a gunge tank for a while and I now think I have the makings of a viable set up. I'll stick to the metric system to make it easier for the people who replied (Imperial measurements used where we live). I would like the gunging to last a decent amount of time (30 seconds to a minute). Enough time to give good coverage. I also want the gunge to flow slow enough that it rolls down the person, I don't like when it hits the head and splatters out to the sides leaving the person relatively clean. We currently have an 18 liter bucket with a 50mm opening I have used for years with water dumps: https://youtu.be/5g5W11d_tNw?si=Gcu8C4m65NxSWP06 The bucket is hanging fairly high up from Andi in that video, would be about 60 centimeters over her head in this gunge tank set up. So the path of least resistance would be to use that 18 liter bucket we already have, but I wasn't sure if that would be enough gunge for good coverage. In our normal messings we use a homemade slime, not commercial gunge, in 9 liter buckets. Usually takes multiple buckets to get really good coverage. Alternatively, we could make a new gunge reservoir for this project out of a storage tote or a fish tank. Would be kinda cool to have a clear container so you could see the gunge sitting overhead. I'll put some pictures below of the set up we are working with.
Another question I had is how long does mixed gunge stay good? We usually have our mess fall on the ground so it is a one and done deal, with this set up we could theoretically recover a good bit of the gunge to use again for another sploshing. Thanks for any input
As others have said it depends on the size of the hole in the bucket or container and how thick you make the gunge. Thin watery gunge will empty much faster and tends to splash a lot more than thicker gunge which will take longer to empty. You can also use a strainer or rose from a watering can to produce a shower effect. I vary my gunge tank dispenser depending on who is sitting under it and their preference.

No idea in general. But when Anneka Rice was being sent through the NHP carwash tank she is on the phone demanding that the gunk(that was due for Noel should be changed from green to pink (which she would prefer to be covered in). She asks down the phone as she is sailing towards her destiny, to exchange the 14 gallons of green gunge for 14 gallons of pink gunge.

Who knows how accurate that was though
52 liters would certainly be a good gunging for most. Excellent research on the subject.

The 18 liter bucket with the right viscosity will give you plenty of flow. That big tank you have in the picture would definitely absolutely cover someone but with a 50mm hole it might take a good few minutes to do it.
As for reusing gunge, we've re used the gunge from both messy supplies and messy pup but I will say that the longer you leave it the colder and more viscous it gets so divide it up into more bucket so you can add hot water and re mix it with the drill before using.

1500L - surely that's a typo. 1500L full of gunge will weigh around 1.5 Tonnes. That's 400 kg more than the average adult Black Rhino - what sort of frame are you using? I also hate to think at what pressure that liquid will be under coming through the average sized outlet.
JD and Messy Andi said: I also want the gunge to flow slow enough that it rolls down the person, I don't like when it hits the head and splatters out to the sides leaving the person relatively clean.
It's been a long day so won't go fully into the fluid mechanics but the taller the gunge booth and the bigger the volume of liquid in the tank the greater the velocity at which the gunge impacts the head and the more the dome effect.
The higher you raise above the floor a fluid the greater the pressure.
A longer thin tank will have a high pressure on liquid than a shorter fatter tray of the same volume of liquid because the height of the water/fluid level.
The reason the Dome Effect reduces as the tank becomes more empty is the drop in fluid pressure from the water line lower AND the lesser volume of liquid in the tank.
If it comes out at higher pressure it has a higher acceleration on release and thus will reach a greater speed if it falls the same distance to hit a head at which point vertical velocity is turned into horizontal velocity to create the "dome effect".
Having a shorter booth will mean the liquid has less time (and therefore will not pick up as much speed/kinetic energy) by the time it hits the head so a lesser dome effect.
If you DM (to confirm happy to receive it - I don't start DM chains on here) then I'll link you (tomorrow - too shattered now) to a tank build I did from about 15ish years ago designed to maximise mess, minimise Dome effect so as to be as messy as possible as efficiently as possibly so as to require (waste) less gunge. (I won't post link publicly as vid has identify info about myself on it).
For all those asking, no it isn't a typo, the tank definitely holds 1500 litres and needs to be lifted into position by a telehandler (or two), my (genius) husband built the tank above an old skip using a iron/steel frame and we leave it hooked up to the telehandler for extra safety, the skip is in turn padded with protective mats to make it safer as it is a bit like a reverse dunk tank as in the overhead tank fills the skip with the victim/s inside the skip, but the gunge is released from three main valves for maximum coverage and to avoid the pressure being too high as well as several smaller pipes and nozzles for even more coverage, the whole thing is more like a HAZMAT decon shower that uses gunge instead of water than a traditional gunge tank and can obliterate the victim from almost any angle, there are even a few hoses for extra runny gunge from buckets to add even more coverage, the gunge is collected in the skip and can either be reused or pumped into one of the septic tanks by using a suction hose and tank trailer, it is an absolutely huge setup and we have other bits and pieces all built by my husband! I would add pictures of the set up but because it is next to a secure building, I legally can't for security reasons!

Measurements in analysis based on average female shoulder width/face width. Because front on and side on tank shots had a different zoom I had to estimate the change in measurements based on the difference in height of vat windows.
Estimated measurements I've been conservative with, it is also notable that the gunge completely fills the windows in the VAT above the tank so it could be even taller extending up the inside of the wooden frame at the top. If so could easily be 100L or above.
Long story short - much more than 30L
Measurement and non-measurement versions of pictures the same size for comparison.
Edit - Image comparisons also assumes square pixels which is well iffy but if not capacity is likely larger as vat likely taller than pictured.

Sorry what?
Given that I have seen carefully poured 10L buckets of gunge provide better coverage than some poorly designed 100L capacity gunge tanks just to be clear quantity does not equal quality.
Now when I replied I thought the most insane part being that you've created a 'gunge tank' for dumping more than twice the volume of the dunk tank I'm building of gunge on to one person. Despite the costs (and challenges) of making such volumes of gunge you are incapable of recuperating the costs of that gunge by batch filming a tonne of videos with various models to make like 20 videos from one batch of gunge to sell because it is built somewhere 'secure.' (But we're going to store the gunge to use again to save the costs - FYI cellulose based food thickener solutions like Natrosol, Methylcellulose and Xanthum Gum breakdown over time - over a couple of weeks if IIRC without other stabilisers - but even so this is minor point).
But that was before you made clear that you've built it next to a secure WEAPONS building that can't be pictured...
"Hey would you like to sit under this vat weighing roughly 1.5 Black Rhinos?"
"Is it safe?"
"Sure it's why we built it right next to a secret weapons depot for extra protection..."
To be clear I don't care whether this tank exists, I personally thought it sounded like someone had more money than sense... Given it is been put somewhere that might include explosion weapons lying around it seems like only $1 is needed here to have more money than sense.

Here's a photo I took of it in 2018 off its perch (at a well known studio!).
This was the actual tank used from 1988-92 (NSR thru series 1 and 2, NHP) before the "trip around the great house". Both it and the tank still had legible remains of BBC effects dept stickers in place. It was tinkered with during this time and there was evidence of other mechanisms and mods having been made and removed (aside from those made by its more recent owners) The "antique" look was a facade attached over this and the tank.
I don't remember its exact capacity. It holds slightly less than 80litres because the times I was there gunge was mixed in an 80l bin around 3/4 full. So the guesses around 40-60 (which tally with 14 UK gallons) might be right. Other producers and models who used the tank might remember?
