I posted in another recent thread that a great way to support producers is to order a custom, since that way you get what you want and they can not only have the scene paid for but perhaps further benefit by selling it in their download store.
I hope those of you who can afford it will take the plunge in 2015 and order a custom, as I've done probably more than two dozen times by now and with many different producers. And with that I figured it was a good idea to offer a public service of sorts where I - and hopefully other respondents - offer tips for how first time custom orderers can help the process go smoothly from start to finish.
First and foremost, order from someone who has a solid track record. But beyond that, try to use a payment method that allows you to seek a refund if somehow the video never gets filmed. But be careful - some payment services will freak out if they know the transaction is in anyway related to something they consider adult in nature, so just stick to sending the money without adding any comments about the nature of what you're paying for.
When making a custom inquiry, find out right away if the price fits within your budget. If not, then don't string them along. In a similar vein, if you want 25+ pies or unusual costumes or other "budget busting" items, be sure to reveal that early on, to avoid unpleasant price-related surprises down the road.
During the back and forth after you first make contact and until the scene is filmed, be courteous and appreciative. Yes - you're the one who's paying, but they're the one providing the service, so don't act like they answer only to you. And although this relates to a fetish, that's not a license to be a creepy perv along the way.
Figure out what the expected turnaround time will be, and make sure it works for you. In other words, if they say it will take a month don't move forward if you're actually not going to be willing to patiently wait more than a week or two. I've been lucky enough to get a custom within a week, while other times it's taken months. They key is I knew what to expect each time because I asked.
Once everything is all set and you're waiting the expected period of time, be patient. Chances are yours isn't the only custom that's in the queue. And even if it is, whoever is filming it has other things going on, whether related to this fetish or real life. Don't bombard them with emails or messages every day, as that won't make things go any faster.
If somehow the end product is not delivered on time, don't assume the worst right away and don't lash out at the producer. You deserve - and more often than not will receive - a reasonable explanation. Of course if you somehow do get ripped off, then if you used the right service to pay for the custom you should be able to be granted a refund.
You should expect that your custom will be made available to the public unless you're told otherwise. In some cases a custom could be truly for your eyes only, but often you'll have to pay extra for that privilege.
Be understanding about the finished product. No exact script can be followed word for word, and some minor things can be overlooked or not go quite as planned. That having been said, if things really went fundamentally awry, then you should raise that to the producer and figure out how to best "make it right."
And last but certainly not least, be as detailed as possible about the scene. It's best to do an overview paragraph and then go into specific detail about key points you want to stress. For example, if you want a particular color of slime, tell them. And you can never go wrong by laying out what exactly you want for pies (shaving cream vs. real pies, crust vs. no crust, cool whip vs. generic topping, thrown vs. smushed vs. self-pies, wipe after the pie or not). If the scene has more than one model, make sure to specify the order that they get messy, especially if it's not "tit for tat". Also, if your custom involves a model getting naked, tell them what you want them to start off wearing and when/how you want them to progress to nude.
I'm hoping others - producers or those who order customs - will have more useful tidbits to share.
This is a really nice post. We just finished our second "custom" video and I wish some of the things you mentioned would have happened. We were able to work with our customers just fine, but there were plenty of little bumps that could have been avoided with some clarification. When we asked questions, we often got "whatever you think works best." That answer might leave you open to things not being 100% the way you want them, or if you're truly okay with the producer going with their gut, then you leave yourself open to things not being 100% the way you see it in your head. The script or scene description is like a book, and just like a book, what I envision could vary quite a bit from what the author or other reader might see. One of our issues had to do with the line "after the shower, model A will put on a bathing suite." Not a problem except that for me a bathing suit is a sexy one piece. The customer wanted a tiny bikini!
Those issues aside, I think you made some good points about turn around times and costs. You just have to have REALLY good communication and be realistic about what you can and can't do. If special requests, extra models, or specific wardrobe is involved, it's going to cost more. You just have to be prepared for that.
You're clearly a pro at this Very well written & makes great points. A lot of people just want to write posts to talk about possible scamming & the like, but no one wants to talk about the other side of things like someone being unreasonable in their requests or times to get it all done.
Thankfully I've been lucky and have always had great people order from me And I'd rather have someone write me a novel explaining every detail than not get it absolutely right. Today someone apologized for writing a large message , but if it's your fantasy then let me make it a reality! If it takes a huge explanation, I'd rather have that than it be so vague that it ends up being disappointing
