This variation was Duncan's idea. And, as happened many a time, I didn't 'get it'. I just wanted to know that we were going to turn the bubbles on at some point. And so then we started the scene. The rest of it is a blur. Months later, when I went to edit the scene, I was happy to see that it turned out quite nicely.
