This one is a bit odd, but am I the only who refrains from buying videos of messy games because I already know the outcome because it's given away in the sample pics? I realise it's a damned if you do/damned if you don't scenario, but part of the fun for me is NOT knowing who is going to get messed up or lose the game. That's part of the appeal - so if i know the guy in white (or whoever) is going to get gunged and not the other one, then it removes the fun for me.
While I appreciate the sentiment and agree in some part, my main beef is sometimes I find one of the guys more attractive than the other. And I'd be disappointed if I bought the video and found the guy I liked didnt get gunged. So finding out who gets gunged solves that issue - if it isnt the guy I'm interested in, I wouldn't buy it.
I ran a Twitter poll to find out this exact thing. It was a dead 50 / 50 split which really didn't help. I lean towards the not knowing as it adds to the fun, I've recorded so many Gunge Roulettes, I can rewatch them and not know what's going to happen.
Could the forums hold a locked thread of sorts that is only accessible if you know the link? That way the video owners can post normal teasers before any gunge, with a link to the related locked thread if folk want to see who gets it?
As someone who makes videos similar to what's being discussed, let me put in my two cents.
So, if we're talking about vids on UMD or messy sites, it's kinda a given that someone, if not everyone, is getting messed up. I like knowing beforehand who gets splattered, so I know if I like the target. But one huge caveat is if the guy shows his face. If a guy doesn't have his clean face shown, then I'll nope right back out. If he does show his face, then I seriously consider buying the scene.
If we are talking about stuff you'd find on TV, then the surprise is part of the thrill. That's one reason I love messy scenes in moves. That, and the fact that they had to do this as part of the job. I like to imagine this specific scene was done, again and again, take after take.
But, in general, I do like messy gameshow scenes. As a producer, it takes fuck-all to write, and as a consumer, I like to think of it as failure. The guy could have kept clean. It was in his power to do so. But he failed.
