I have posted this in the WAM engineering group in FetLife, but I thought I should post here too
I was wondering what issues would need to be considered if one wanted to use savoury food such as baked beans or mushy peas in a gunge tank instead of gunge.
Also, has anyone had any experience with using pumps for sauces like ketchup instead of gunge.
As I say, this is more out of curiosity - I'm not involved in any project to build a tank at this point in time.

We have done food in our Gunge Tank quite a few times before, most notably with the lovely Jess West although we have done quite a few sessions with food. It does work if the outlet hole is big enough but it also helps toy add some water to some of the food to make it flow better. It does take a fair bit of cleaning after compared to gunge though.

Hi Tilly! As I mentioned, I haven't got plans at the moment, because of the joy of needing to do a PhD thesis over the next 12 months. I also don't really have space to accommodate a tank and won't have space for one for a long long while :-( But I would be happy, after my PhD, to help with projects to build a tank
Wamgear said: You should have no issues dropping mushy peas etc from a gunge tank, as long as the exit hole is large enough to initiate the exit of the goo.
By that, I mean mushy peas will not go through a 2" diameter hole unless you either have a serious quantity of them, or you push them somehow (e.g. compressed air).
However, a 4" hole is more likely to allow the goo to drop of its own will.
If you seal the tank, then you can fill it behind the gunge with compressed air, and that will push out the thicker substances. But sealing a tank is difficult, and the release mechanism has to be very good to not leak.
As for pumping thicker liquids and gunge, you can do it with a solids pump (otherwise known as a dirty water pump). These are designed to pass mud and small stones etc.
But... they ain't cheap, and you get what you pay for. We had a £390 pump that pumped pretty thick porridge very well. Be aware however that as it sucks the gunge into it, the blades of the pump will probably mix and thin your goo slightly.
Plus... to be honest, 230v pumps and getting messy is a risky way to play
I am currently designing a web shop that is going to sell everything you need for from gungetanks to pumps, trigger mechanisms etc
Many many many thanks for your advice Steve! I hope Tara is well too!
I had been wondering about the different gunge tank mechanisms used for different substances. I found a youtube video from an episode of Noel's House Party where the effects guy was gunged in a mini gunge train, because of mistakes in the previous two episodes with the gunge tank setups! The video is here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chtINi1VNt4
The mess involved:
- Gunging with beans using a tank similar to those used in Get Your Own Back, where the beans are stored in a cylinder and a ball is held up against the outlet hole on the outside. When triggered, the ball is lowered out of the outlet and the beans flow down around it. To see what I mean with the GYOB tanks, have a look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwj_NNSivL4
- Gunge with .....gunge(!) - This seems to be the usual NHP thing of a plug that blocks the hole from inside that then gets pulled up out of the hole allowing the gunge to go down.
With this in mind, I've sometimes wondered if the ball trap mechanism used for the beans in the NHP clip is better than the standard gunge tank mechanism.
For the pumping of suces (ketchup, brown sauce etc.) maybe rather than using a solids/dirty water pump (as you say, electricity and liquids - not the best idea! ), perhaps some sort of control using gungeBLASTERS (TM) ?? http://messysupplies.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=251
