Tomorrow morning I start the 16 hour annual drive to my mud pits. The journey is long and perilous, but I shall be rewarded by returning to my yearly mating grounds. Hopefully a week in mud will be enough to fill my mud lust this time. Does anyone else take road trip to satisfy their messy fetish?
Just spent 5 hrs checking my old mud pits and trying to find new ones. Found a new dream spot... but there was a hornet's nest 5 feet above it in a tree. Silt so deep the first step made me sink waist deep. Next checked out a bog and almost fell through the moss into the abis beneath it. Finally found good forested clay. Spend an hour making it good and deep before playing. Will go out tomorrow to play more.

Oh my...I WISH I could find spots like that. It's really just all rocks, or smaller rocks around here. Also, that's what the 10 cans of RAID hornet spray are for.
Northern Wisconsin eh? My ol neck of the woods ^.^ Never got to go find some mud up that way, tho I've heard good things about some spots around Trout Lake And the northern reaches up towards Hurley and Ashland the red clay was always nice to see!

I probably hiked a mile to the final location from where I parked, but in total I did about 4 miles today and part of it was walking upstream through a heavy current that swept me away at one point. Good mud takes a while and dedication to find.

Literally curious, so do you tend to find better mud upstream? I always looked at mouths of creeks. Also, I'm actually worried about the quality of mud (i.e. bacteria and flesh eating diseases).
I look in between sharp river bends. There is usually a small new cut of water trying to make a straighter path for the river to flow in. These small intersecting streams usually deposit tons of silt and soil where they enter into the current river. Or look for places with high silt build up on shore lines. Where ever you start looking, grassy areas and intersecting streams are a good bet.

Sorta, I have access to a place with a great deep bathtub and 2.5 hours from me, and next week we are heading on a road trip to a rural airbnb and hoping for mud.
If the both of you are taking the Ohio Turn Pike, let me know. You'll drive right past me. If you would like, we could meet up for quick bite to eat or I'm happy just to make a few suggestions. We have amazing food here in Cleveland, Ohio!
We've shot quite a lot. 4 hours of play alone just today. As we work our way through editing them we will release them. First one should be up sometime next week along with a selfie sinking I did with my phone.

A lot of it is being able to spot a location's raw potential. This was nothing more than moss and water faintly shimmering by the side of the stream when I first found it. First step sunk to my mid shin so we cleared away nettles, moss, and branches and began the 2 hour long process of churning the ground and adding stream water as we needed. You don't find a pit like one. You have to unlock its potential through hard work.
