anyone else local to newcastle UK? and maybe thought about mudwrestling in the river mud? i'm not looking for a partner here. just wondering if maybe anyone has tried it? or has any thoughts on it? looks fairly inviting if you avoid a section of the river with shopping trolleys / traffic cones
This part of the Tyne is fast flowing (rises and falls quickly), and that mud has quicksand-like properties in places. You'd be putting yourself in serious danger. It looks benign but this is one of the most dangerous watercourses in the region.
You're also forbidden under local law to swim or bathe in these sections of the river, and may find yourself the subject of unwanted attention if you go in. The Port of Tyne Authority have in the past gone after people who take a swim in the river.

There are plenty of other spots in the region.
thanks brown_apples, thats useful. curiously I rode the cycle path all the way from newcastle centre down to wylam, i didn't spot any signs against swimming.
I also live near the Tyne just up from Wylam, I could imagine the fine Geordie B and Q shoppers being fairly entertained by us mud wrestling but brown apples is correct about the Tyne. It's far too risky to try anything like that. You would need to find spots on much smaller rivers or much further upstream in the Kielder area maybe. Not a huge mud fan myself but hope you find a nice spot in the beautiful Northumbrian Countryside.
There aren't signs because it's not really an inviting watercourse.
As MessyIP says, you'd need to go much further upstream, maybe towards Hexham or beyond. Else you'd be best to try somewhere on one of the smaller rivers, but I don't know anywhere specific as I'm not into mud.
Either way you have to be super careful doing anything like this in a natural watercourse. I'm the wrong spot or at the wrong time and your life will be in danger. Do this locally and get into trouble that requires rescue, and the local rags like the Chronicle will be all over the story. You may not want that!
