You are right....Hefner's fascination with Monroe is a bit odd, seeing as they never met face to face, and she hated him, because she never gave her permission to use those pics in his magazine. Not that she had to give permission, because she did not own the rights to those pics anyway, her photographer owned rights to those pics and Hefner simply bought the rights from the photographer who owned them. The story goes that she attempted to contact Hefner to ask him not to publish them, and he agreed to honor her request, but later changed his mind and published them anyway....so she despised him.

So lets not delude ourselves that Hefner did anything wonderful to honor Marilyn, he simply used her to launch his magazine and make money. So for him now to buried next to Marilyn, who hated him, just shows the size of his ego.

It would have made more sense if he were buried next to Bettie Page....cos she was somebody Hef knew for many years and they were close friends.

Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby must be thinking "gee....how come Hef dodged a bullet with his behaviour for decades and we get caught".

You can google the stories about Hefner and Monroe. Hef himself admitted, in an interview with CNN, that he never met her, yet for decades he claimed to be in love with her and was honoring her in his magazine. The reality is that he exploited her likeness purely for financial gain and to increase circulation of his magazine because she never gave her consent to him using those pictures and she wanted them destroyed but he used them anyway.

This is no different to Michael Jackson's exploiting the Beatles music by outbidding Paul McCartney when the Beatles music rights became available for sale......i.e. McCartney wanted to buy the Beatles library not only because he wrote many of the songs, but he wanted their music preserved and NOT used in exploitive ways on tv commercials. Jackson outbid McCartney and therefore owned the Beatles music rights and promptly starting to licence the music to be used on cheesy tv commercials....this happened in 1984 and McCartney was so angry he never spoke to Jackson again. Legally Jackson owned the Beatles library so he could use it how he pleased, but he was not honoring The Beatles by letting their music be used in exploitive ways.

Same thing with Hefner, he bought the rights to those pics so he could use them, but this was not honoring Marilyn (who he claimed he was in love with) and was merely using her likeness to make magazine sales.

Hef bought the crypt next to Marilyin when it came up for sale in 1992, for $75,000....which he saw as a great investment because that would guarantee him publicity for the next 25 years where he could brag about being next to her grave in every interview.....so it was for his publicity benefit...not as a homage to her,

When Jacko hit the skids and needed money he sold the Beatles Catalog to Sony.....so Sony owned it until a couple of months ago...and McCartney has been suing Sony for the last 20 years to get it back. The legal case was just settled earlier this year and now, as of 2018 McCartney will finally be able to control his music again starting next year.

BTW.....I was just watching an interview on MSNBC this morning with Cooper Hefner, the son of Hugh Hefner....where the reporter was asking him about the Harvey Weinstein scandal and whether his father bore some responsibility for this culture of the casting couch. The response from Hefner's son was that Playboy was an organization that respected women and that his father would never engage in such things. It was a laughable response and I had to reach for the barf bag as his son portrayed his father as great defender of women's rights....considering the fact that many of the sexual abuse cases claimed against Bill Cosby took place at the Playboy mansion and Bill Cosby was a regular at Playboy parties. I guess the fairest thing you can say about Hefner's behavior with women versus Cosby is that Hefner was polite and only abused women while they were conscious and he did not drug them and assault them while they were unconscious as Cosby did.

Hefner enjoyed degrading women...i.e. all the dozens of Playboy Playmates whp stayed at his mansion never got "paid" a salary per se.....they were given $1000 a week "pocket money" and were forced to line up outside Hef's bedroom door....like the scene from the movie "Oliver" where they had to stand in a line and beg for more porridge....only in Hef's case he paid the girls personally every week as they came into his bedroom one by one, and they were expected to "perform:" in order to receive their weekly pocket money.

George Herbert Walker Bush.....but now he has his own Weinstein problem because 2 women have now come forward to claim that he sexually assaulted them while they were standing next to him in his wheelchair.

This is how far we have come....cos back in my youth what George Bush did was called "goosing" not sexual assault....but now they have filed sexual assault charges. There is NOTHING sacred nor important about keeping/maintaining the status quo.
