I want to try to have real pies in my videos instead of shaving cream. BUT real pies means Cool Whip and it only sticks if it is refrigerator-ed beforehand. My producers don't want to take up their whole fridge with Cool Whip pies, so I use shaving cream.
Is there a way to have real pies and have them stick?
If you are in a midwestern state or FL Gordons food services has Chef Pierre pies at $6 each or a case of 6 for about $35. They stick really well!!!! and are in boxes frozen so they only need to defrost and dont take up much space. No need for the frig just pick up the pies the day before
Sneakerpup said: Why hasn't anyone caught on to meringue pie recipes? 1 spoon Wilton's meringue powder, 1 bag of sugar, cup of water in a good mixer and blam... Two pies. Repeat!
Hang on, hang on - what kind of spoon: tea or table? And, more importantly, when you say 'bag', do you mean a sachet like you'd get with a cup of tea or one of them kilo paper bags sugar comes in from the supermarket? Because that's a loooooot of sugar!
more money. for real. it just costs more to make a pie that will stick and look good.
lennys 6 dollar pies are right. ( i have only seen them a handful of times around here at bulk places where you buy them 6 at a time) and to make them with crust, filling and a topping that will make it all stick and you want real deal cool whip? it just costs more. that is all. dream whip is really great for sticking. adding sticky substance to the topping helps...
if you want the splatter along with it too, you are gonna either have to choose between shaving foam pies with water (anglefan mentioned this in a thread about splatting pies and i love his pies) or make sure to get some models who dont mind to take a fucking beating with pies! lol....and yes, you are gonna have to be prepared to spend a little more to make some bomb ass pies. you want two dollar pies? you will get crust and some cool whip. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt work as well...i know throughout an entire scene....just using cool whip and crust, it will wear off...unless you spend a little more and add some sticky substance to your cool whip.
models that wear a lot of makeup, i have noticed that pies will slide off easier. i dont typically wear make up on my face. just eye make up but one day, i was having a bad face day (lol) and i wore some make up on my face. we did cool whip pies and crust and those bad boys were slipping off a LOT quicker than usual! have any of you producers had this problem?? that was just with the cool whip. its the oils.
see, i have been doing pies for a while now but i am no pie expert like these guys but i have been toying with all kinds of pie recipes that are all food. and the all food ones are just more expensive if you want big, they are gonna keep sticking, type pies. that is what i have found, anyway. i have been using a different pie recipe here lately that i really love but it does cost me more. just part of it. again, im gonna have to try out lennys pies bc if they do that well like his scenes show, im gonna have to haul my ass about 15 mins down the road and pick some up! bc in the grand sceme of things, making a great pie, costs about 5 bucks anyway. whats another dollar to have an already made pie when you are having models come in and you dont have a lot of prep time?

No, I am in the Northeast. But thanks for the thought.

I assume your question is rhetorical.
So Rich, how do you get them to stick? What do you use? (I am 100% sure you have discussed this many times before, but I never read it bc I never cared before. But now I do!! )

What is this "sticky substance" you are talking about? I know Ken mentioned he uses corn syrup. Is that what you mean?

You can PM me... I don't want to give EVERY secret away!
any kind of sticky substance you can mix. even maple syrup it will help them stick. corn syrup would be great too but, mixing it with cool whip, you have to make sure the cool whip is right in between frozen and cold....otherwise, if it is thawed, the syrup will make the whip into syrup and the syrup into whip, basically. its a timing thing. for sure. i have noticed that using fruit fillings help them stick too....i have also used frosting on the bottom on top of the crust to help sticking....mallow fluff mixed with cool whip. that works well too. like i said, just costs more. prep time is longer. its honestly all about spending more money. testing what works for how you do your scenes.
and ariel and i have both used dream whip and it sticks very well. its more expensive and the prep time is doubled but it does do very well.
The best for me and very cheap is the meringue... it only needs egg whites and a lot of sugar (wich is really cheap)... if you can whip it at 50-60 the sugar will melt better... I guess would help adding honey, corn syrup, but never tried.... But is really fluffy, sticky and doesn't smell sour at all as other milk based products!! My GF hates that smell as myself... ans last for a long time...
And of course, adding fillings would help and makes the pie much much better to me!!
If anyone can add ideas about the meringue, would be great!!
The best and cheapest were the old Pet Ritz pies. Nice and thick and about a buck each. Room temperature was perfect. But alas, they no longer seem to exist.
$6 a pie is a bit high for most folks production costs. Though room temp ones are great to use if cost doesn't matter to you.
A proper mix of cool whip and frosting makes a most excellent sticky, yet easy to wash off pie. Looks good on camera too. Put it in a graham cracker crust and you can also add some "filler" like various syrups. About 3 parts frosting to one part cool whip. These are for "hand to face" pies and not for throwing. Cost is about $3 per pie. For throwing pies...cheap frozen pie shells you bake lightly..and then fill with room temp cool whip are good.
The colder the cool whip the less likely it is to stick.
Finally, marshmallow fluff is great to use as well. You will need to add a little water though. But...be careful not to add too much water or you will end up with milk.
Also, once you smoosh a marshmallow pie on someone the only thing that will stick to it is more marshmallow cream.

Yep, those were a recurring element in the early SlapstickStuff videos... But BOY those things were temperamental! My best and worst "first pieings" both occurred with PetRitz, literally within weeks of each other.

I've never tried the water thing. I just microwaved it immediately before. Super sticky, but to the point of being impossible to get off without a LOT of hot water, so not a favorite for models (and why I've slowly phased them out).
That said, while all other pies will SLOWLY fall off marshmallow given enough time, some of my favorite hits ever have been Cool Whip pies immediately following marshmallow.
I think it was originally Dana who figured out to put the whole "tub" of Fluff into the microwave FIRST to make it easier to get out of the container.
And you're right about the 50/50 texture of the Pet Ritz pies. When they disappeared we found a company called Banquet which also no longer sells in this area. That's when we went to the mixture of cool whip and frosting. We never threw those...but I always want to give that a shot...just didn't want to take the chance of hurting a model. I supposed without the tin, it might work.
