I have often seen huge vats of gunge or custard or other substances and wonder if they get re-used?
When possible, if I make slime or anything else, I'll usually try to save it in a plastic (disinfected) trash bin with a tight-fitting lid. Depending on what it is, it may last a while, or it may start to turn in a few days.
One example is xanthan gum slime. I had made a rather large amount and enjoyed it, and scooped it back into the plastic bin and covered it. Little did I know it was just beginning to go 'off' and had been making tiny foam bubbles in the bin. What had been a half-full bin gushed over the top when I took the lid off. Thankfully, it was already in the tub when I did this, so no mess to the house happened. The volume had almost doubled though, and the texture was like a mixture of shaving foam and slime, quite nice. There was just a slight smell to it though, so I didn't try saving it a second time.
Another example was years ago when I mixed cooking oil, water and a couple of ten pound bags of flour to make a gooey white paste that was incredibly sticky. (don't try this without the oil or you'll be plucking flour clumps from your hair for weeks) The stuff was amazing, so I put it back into the bin for storage, but once again, the texture changed. The enzymes in the flour caused it to 'rise' as though I had added yeast. I wound up with less-runny, thicker, airier stuff - sort of like wet bread dough. Once again, it was different than the previous day, and incredible to play in, not to mention the volume had increased a lot this time as well.
I've also used polymer-based slimes and found that some of them may be stored for quite some time with no problems at all.
So, back to my original question, has anyone had success re-using messes and what were your experiences?
I always try to! If we have a giant mess? And we can contain it correctly? I always try to make the most of all of it! I know I will be doing that Dec. 2nd when Taylor comes to shoot. There is SO MUCH mess? I've got an inflatable pool waiting on the sidelines to fill with all the leftover goop for us to play in! Hopefully? It will turn out like I expect because it's a lot of different consistencies but I think the gunge will mix them all up nicely! Chunky big ol pool of goop! Waste not! Food is too expensive to NOT try to re use! I think if you are doing it in terms of filming? Just try to wipe the sides and stuff so it looks like you are filming a whole new thing. That can be a bitch but I think it helps the look of it!
