I was wondering something about buying videos. When buying a video you have to enter your name and contact information in order to make a credit card payment, so obviously the website has that info. But I'm wondering, does the individual video producer get the names of buyers, or is it just the store website that does?
I'm wondering about how this works with videos sold on the UMD site of course, but also on others such as Vidown and clips4sale, if anyone knows.
No, we only get the username, and only if that user has selected to allow the username to be seen (its in your profile settings somewhere)
I've also sold on clips4sale and manyvids and it's the same there. Not sure about vidown, I keep meaning to set one up but ending up with too much on my plate to do it
Only the payment processing site (which in the case of UMD is Epoch - UMD itself doesn't see the card details) gets the financial data, all the individual store owners get is the username, and there is an option to make purchases anonymous in which case all we get is "private buyer".
Also note on UMD there is also an option to buy using PayPal, which means you don't need to enter card details at all - you can use an existing PayPal balance, or you can pay by card through PayPal (which means only PP get the card data, Epoch doesn't see it). Or if you have a card or bank account already attached to PayPal, no card details need to be entered anywhere, the purchase price just gets taken, by PP, from the linked account.
Edit: Having just checked out the payment process, no card data is handled by UMD at all, it's done off-site by billing provider Epoch, so only they ever see the actual card data. When you click to Checkout, you get transferred to the billing site, then transferred back here to access the content when it's complete.
On LXdownloads.com, all payments are handled by the secure billing provider. We don't retain any information whatsoever, it just comes up as an order ID which is simply a string of random numbers.
This isn't just good for customers and their privacy & discretion, it is good for us as we know that we can never have data leaks as there is no direct trace, so peace of mind all round.
