It just dawned on me that today is November 9th, so I believe that means yesterday was the election. Honestly, I stopped paying attention and I went to bed early last night.
Anyway with our new President Elect Hillary Clinton, do you consider having finally having a female President might have some effect on society? Largely slapstick WAM has been male oriented with only a few female stooge recipients in a sea of men. However, more and more we've become a post-Feminism society, particularly now that Hillary I assume got probably nearly 400 electoral college votes and Trump struggled to get traditionally red states as the polls had been suggesting now for several weeks and months. What I mean to say is, I assume it was a repudiation of his chauvinistic style bravado and speech and a sign that our country has taken one more step towards progress and diversity.
Do you think this will have any impact on society at large? Perhaps something that will trickle down, even to entertainment and hopefully slapstick comedy routines - ones just as willing to use female stooges as male ones?
I don't have a joke. This is putrid. The UMD is a US-based community run by a person of color and with a significant female and LGBT membership, and our new president openly advocates for discrimination against them (and ultimately, if he gets around to it, everyone else who isn't Donald Trump). Fuck this.

Relax and try and get on with your life.
President Trump isn't coming after you.
No, but if it's anything like Brexit, there will be a rise in the number of hate crimes as those people (a tiny minority) feel vindicated by the Trump win and that everyone agrees with them.
I hope all the US people marked by the Trump cause (basically anyone who is not a cis hetero white male) remains safe and I can only hope that he calms the fuck down and doesn't screw everything up.
Let me know in 4 years, off to get a medically induced coma.

Considering all the violent protests, terrorists attacks and police shootings that have happened under Obama's "watch", we know how to "stay safe". :ohbruther:
Watching folks freak out over Trump's election has been fun, but they need to calm down now. :ahahah:

Wow, patronising and insulting someone over showing care and worry for others. Aren't you just a pleasant soul.
The US has had violence issues for a long time, not just on Obama's watch so maybe you don't know how to "stay safe". I am just worried about an increase in incidents. You are right though it might not happen, but it is still a concern.
As for calm down? I will in my own time, not when I am told to thanks.

Yeah as long as you're not Muslim, female or any other minority you'll be fine...except when the economy tanks again from deregulation.

It's easy to say that when you haven't been physically attacked by Trump supporters. I don't recall Obama ever encouraging violence against others from his supporters.
Hey guys, so I have had limited internet connectivity the past couple days and I only use the data I have for the UMD basically, but why is everyone still talking about Trump? He's over, please, let's discuss Hillary. How much did she win by, anyway? 300? 400? There was a pool at work where we bet on how early Trump would give his concession speech, I put $100 on him giving the earliest in history but I was worried he would not accept his loss, so I'm worried I might be out a hundred bucks because of Trump refusing to admit defeat. He's arrogant like that, so you just don't know.
But here we are, now you guys got me talking about the guy. Seriously, he's over and done with, enough about him, please. Can we finally discuss Hillary? Who else thinks it's amazing we will finally have a female President? OMG, honestly.. Wow. Just wow. The thought of it sends chills down my spine, I am just so overjoyed that we FINALLY will be getting a little diversity. Yeah people, Women are just as good as men, if not a lot better, so I have an idea, once Hillary's 8 years are up, let's elect ONLY women for the next 240 years to make up for the misogyny. Whose with me on that?
So, come on guys, let's hear it... what do YOU want Hillary to do once she's in charge? I can not wait to hear what your ideas are!

Hey, run around and freak out if you like. It's your life and your time, not mine.
Yeah as long as you're not Muslim, female or any other minority you'll be fine...except when the economy tanks again from deregulation.
How do you know who will be fine?
You worried about the Muslims? Last time I checked, we weren't driving cars into their crowds, or blowing up their marathons, or flying jets into their buildings.
So tell me, what nefarious deeds does Trump have planned for all these minorities?
It's easy to say that when you haven't been physically attacked by Trump supporters. I don't recall Obama ever encouraging violence against others from his supporters.
Apparently, you had a rather one-sided view of the election if you didn't see all the violence perpetrated at Trump rallies by Sander's supporters and Black Lives Matters.
You know the same Black Lives Matters that Obama brought to the White House and praised while they were torching cars, looting stores, running up on stages and threatening speakers, and calling for the brutal murders of police officers?
You wonder why Trump is going to be the President? It's Obama letting the craziness of those radicals (and others) go unchecked for 8 years and the suffocating ultra PC left movement. Folks were sick of it.
Yesterday, they fought back.
I didn't vote for Trump with any enthusiasm, but I did vote for change from the decades of corruption and deceit that Hillary has long been apart of.
LeilaHazlett said: Yeah as long as you're not Muslim, female or any other minority you'll be fine...except when the economy tanks again from deregulation.
I doubt that the damage will be restricted just to minority groups, though they will of course be hit tremendously and disproportionately hard. Granted, it's white America who voted him in, but white America will also suffer from the fallout of his economic policies. They'll reap what they sowed.
(Honestly, I'm trying to find silver linings. The best I can come up with is, "At least Russia and North Korea like him.")

Yes, because everybody in America is doing SO wonderful right now. :ohbruther:
Maybe some voted in a non-politician like Trump because folks in America ARE doing badly, and the corrupt politicians in Washington don't seem to care?
I hope that I last long enough to get a good long look at the face of just *one* Trump voter at the moment when that fuckwit realizes he was a mark for the world's scuzziest con artist. Life is never that just, though.
First up: Enigmahood: I hate to break this to you, but you don't have a woman President!
Now lets take a deep breath and consider:
Most all politicians temper their Campaign rhetoric once in office. Hillary (for example) would have about faced on her anti TPP stance in a nanosecond once in office and adopted most of her popular standpoints in reaction to Sander's Campaign. Had the DNC not been so corrupt they would have promoted Sanders and you'd now have a Democratic President. The exposure of that corruption was perhaps the biggest win all around for your electoral system, but I digress. Trump has already removed a statement on banning Muslims from the US from his website. And that "Wall", well we all know that won't happen. Campaign promises seldom mirror reality. Truth is Obama didn't even come close to his Campaign promises. In fact he missed the boat by a mile from what he "promised" to do.
Here's just a "partial list of Obama's unrealized Campaign promises":
I intend to close Guantamo, Increase protections for whistleblowers, (yeah right!) Enact the Buffett rule, Create a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, Eliminate all oil and gas tax loopholes, Expand the child and dependent care credit, Close loopholes in the corporate tax deductibility of CEO pay, End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000, Create a $60 billion bank to fund roads and bridges, Sign the Employee Free Choice Act, Forbid companies in bankruptcy from giving executives bonuses, Allow imported prescription drugs, Prevent drug companies from blocking generic drugs, Allow Medicare to negotiate for cheaper drug prices, Double federal funding for cancer research, Sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Require employers to provide seven paid sick days per year, Reduce the Veterans Benefits Administration claims backlog, Form international group to help Iraq refugees, Provide at least $2 billion for services to Iraqi refugees, Work with Russia to move nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert, << say what? Establish a Global Education Fund, Establish regulations to secure chemical plants, Secure ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), Seek independent watchdog agency to investigate congressional ethics violations, Expose Special Interest Tax Breaks to Public Scrutiny, Allow five days of public comment before signing bills, Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials, Create scholarships to recruit new teachers, Sign the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act into law, (wow that would have come in handy) Ban racial profiling by federal law enforcement agencies, Increase the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour, Restore Superfund program so that polluters pay for clean-ups, Support human mission to moon by 2020, Establish a Global Energy Corps to promote green energy in developing countries, Encourage diversity in media ownership, Strengthen anti-monopoly laws to favor independent farmers, Give tax incentives to new farmers, Limit term of director of national intelligence, Give annual "State of the World" address, Establish a low carbon fuel standard, Require 25 percent renewable energy by 2025, Enact windfall profits tax for oil companies, Require plug-in fleet at the White House, Require new federal fleet purchases to be half plug-in hybrids or electric vehicles, Recognize the Armenian genocide, "No family making less than $250, 000 will see any form of tax increase", Cut the cost of a typical family's health insurance premium by up to $2,500 a year, Bring Democrats and Republicans together to pass an agenda, End the war in Afghanistan in 2014,
Then of course, there's how many governments he's toppled, countries he's destroyed and people he's killed in illegal military operations around the world. Actions he never eluded to while pimping for your vote.
That's just some of what he "promised" to get elected, and a good example of "wait and see".
Truth is, Trump, like all other newly elected officials will not be able, or allowed to enact many of his campaign statements and promises. And too, I suspect many were said or even harshly phrased, to get attention and thereby, get elected, and it worked. Lord knows he was up against an entrenched establishment with a stranglehold over almost all the Western Press and he did what he needed to garner some attention. I for one hope that his Acceptance Speech was in fact more in line with his Presidential ambitions than his campaign rhetoric. Personally I consider the blow to the corrupt standing government's global policies a win win for us all regardless, WW3 has perhaps been postponed and Podesta's Bitch is dangling in the wind

Stick to Canadian politics, dude.
I think you're right, substantially. The manufacturing sector is gone, and Bush's Great Recession has taken a harsh toll.
And yet, you haven't disagreed with me. Just because things are bad, does not mean it couldn't get worse. And of course they'd get worse one way or the other, given the two lousy candidates you ended up with. But at this point it's more about choosing how quickly you want the tire fire to take over the yard, and kind of person you want to be while we all watch it burn.

The Democrats abandoned the working class in the '70s and they are reaping that harvest now -- deservedly so, in the abstract. But Trump voters willingly sentenced a vast number of their fellow citizens to an ominous and uncertain future solely out of narrow economic self-interest (or, less charitably, to further their backward, intolerant religious and cultural views), notwithstanding that their supposed savior is someone whose success rests entirely upon ripping off anyone who ever had the misfortune of doing business with him. It will be a great, if Pyrrhic, pleasure to watch these idiots get their pockets picked.
Also, JediKnight is ass-backwards to put it mildly, but people should quit flagging his posts unless they become abusive. If we're going to have a political discussion, everyone is entitled to be heard.

I have no idea if Trump is going to work out or not.
However, I do know that going the same course that we have for years now (electing a long-time, corrupt politician like Hillary) is getting us NOWHERE.
Isn't one of the definitions of "Insanity" doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? :ahahah:
Electing a non-politician like Trump, who can bring real change, could be one of the best moves in the Republic's history.
Or it could be the biggest mistake since the Roman Senate made Caligula their emperor.
However, the country was headed in the wrong direction, and the politicians had no answers, or just didn't care while they got fat, rich, and powerful on OUR taxes.
We'll see what a non-politician, not beholden to the old ways, will do.

The correct term is "bass-ackwards", I believe.
Not worried about my posts being flagged though. I find it richly ironic. Folks yelling about being worried over their "freedom", but at the same time trying to shut down my free speech.

This critique of Clinton and the status quo is generally true, but the problem with just shrugging and saying, "Hey, maybe Trump'll fix it" is that any such fix would sacrifice as collateral damage all the non-white-males Trump has explicitly pledged to persecute. So that makes Trump voters bigoted sociopaths. It also ignores the obvious reality that Trump is an exemplar of the useless moneyed elites who never showed a whit of solidarity with the working class until feigning it suited his political ambitions (and who built much of his fortune by openly exploiting said working class). And that makes Trump voters the same kind of stone-dumb rednecks who blow their nuts off with firecrackers or get shot by their dog.

It's hilarious how you sit here and talk about what a "terrible person" Trump is, yet say the most nasty, vile things about those that supported him. People that are mostly total strangers to you.
Whose soul is really full of hate and has a heart full of malice, Regis? Try looking at mirror when you say those things about Trump supporters.
Maybe for you, the answer was to vote for more of the same 'ol, same 'ol, then stick your butt in the air and take it, but some of decided to do something different.
You know like the way our founding fathers did 200+ years ago when they decided to start their own country instead of sticking their butts in the air and taking it from a fat British king?

You are presuming that I supported Clinton; I did not, although in retrospect perhaps I should have.
Anyhow, as Trump supporters insist that Trump is exceptional, that his mandate and modus operandi are to upend fundamental civil and political norms, it's really rich that they nevertheless expect to be coddled in the responses of decent people. You know nothing about me but I know that anyone who voted for Trump at least condones discrimination based on race and religion and "grabbing 'em by the pussy." So by all means, start a hate-and-malice column for each side and let's see how that totes up.

Don't whine to me about hate and malice. You are the one with the judgmental routine.
You've dismissed all trump supporters as "backwards, racists rednecks". So who would listen to you about anything? Who would care what you have to say? You didn't just close the bridge of communication, you put gasoline and dynamite to it and blew it up.
You don't know anything about me, either, but if you want to believe we are all just a bunch of ignorant bigots, go ahead and wallow in your own arrogance and ignorance.
This is one of the reasons I hate elections. People who otherwise get along alright can turn on each other. The two party system has turned from two different sides coming up with separate ideas, collaboration between them, and creating an ultimate plan to an us vs them.
No one likes it when their side looses, especially when this election was the way it was. Hillary was not personable and the DNC should not have pushed her to being the candidate. Trump said things I personally could not tolerate about people of different creeds, races, and about people of my own gender. Things did not go as I had hoped, but I am going to take this as an opportunity to change how I involve myself in the process. There is more than we can all do to ensure our parties', and country's, future elections need not be so divisive.
Now is not the time to fight with ourselves. Now is a time to come together. Instead of gloating, bemoaning, or finger pointing extend an olive branch and be an example political leaders should follow.
JediKnight said: Don't whine to me about hate and malice. You are the one with the judgmental routine.

Yes, because they just elected a fascist.

No doubt many, many people will start bending over backwards to get in good with the red hats. But I'm not interested in having a polite dialogue with those who have voted explicitly to harm me and my friends. That possibility closed on Tuesday. It's time for resistance, not accommodation.
People here who are disgusted by Trump but are still in "let's all come together now" mode, seriously, get past that. It won't help. You, not JediKnight, are the ones I'm talking to here. Lay low but start thinking about where you will stand and how you will respond when they come for you. Yes, it may not get that bad, but it's a real possibility now. I took the "it won't happen here" line throughout the election and I think I was wrong. (Start reading/following Sarah Kendzior; she's ahead of everyone else on this.)
Done now; going back to banging out as many faps as possible before the global economy tanks and/or Rudy Giuliani's NSA scoops up this thread and orders "Regis" doxxed and interned.
