Hello All Has anyone here gotten into Obstacle Course Racing or Mud Runs just to get muddy ? I am in Upstate NY and most of my good Mud spots either have Houses now or are watched heavily because of the druggies.Any Ideas for other spots ?
I got into it a couple years ago. I missed the true heyday of OCR in like 2010-2015 because I'm not anything like an athlete and I was worried about my ability to finish.
I finally decided to try one while on a business trip in New England and it ended up being about 30 degrees (F) and super hilly! I managed to survive without dying and that gave me a lot more confidence. I still tend to do the more laid-back/local/not "every square inch designed by ex-special forces to maximally destroy you" runs.
Sadly the last few years have drawn down the amount and diversity of available runs. I think the novelty factor wore off and organizing and running a profitable event turned out to be tougher than people thought. Warrior Dash was the most "non-athlete friendly" of the big organizations and they went out of business. Spartan doesn't have much mud, Tough Mudder is a little intense. COVID did a major number on most of the small local runs. One charity run I had signed up for got postponed and then cancelled forever (they kept my money without a real apology, though). Another good local series that got started in 2019 looks like they are also keeping everyone's money and ghosting.
Not optimistic about 2021. Maybe we will see a small resurgence in 2022 with people wanting to escape the house? A guy can dream.
