anyone else heard of this? I hadn't heard of it until a couple of days ago, it looks like a crap film, but has a really huge pie fight at the end, in which two or three attractive, nicely dressed girls get pied. Its on Youtube
One of my first memories of "buildup then letdown." The old alt.fetish newsgroup (YEARS before the UMD started) was abuzz about this film that featured a HUGE pie fight at the end... and Traci Lords (fresh off leaving porn to go "legit") was starring!! We all made predictions of how many pies she would take, how good the coverage was, etc etc.
And then.... The movie finally came out.
Honestly, it's not a bad pie fight... and compared to mainstream scenes NOW, it's fantastic. But at the time, there was good mainstream stuff everywhere, and a quickly-edited pie fight where most of the hits went to guys (specifically the male lead, who gets destroyed).... with only a few blink-and-miss female hits... and Traci Lords clearly had "pie" applied to her face and never takes a direct hit.... Well, it was a pretty colossal letdown. (The first of many many MANY to come..... )
Anyway, that didn't stop it from showing up on about 20 different cliptapes. For a while, every single tape I purchased from WAMTEC either had the Nutty Nut, The Great Race, or both.
Fun fact: The UNEDITED pie fight is quite good, with many more female hits (although still no Traci). I obtained a copy ages ago. Unfortunately it's a bad transfer of the work print, on VHS to boot.... So quality is awful. Sadly I don't forsee a deluxe edition of this "classic" with bonus footage ever coming out....
I've always thought it was pretty good in the scheme of things and the pies are nicely made - bit too male focussed though. Sadly the rest of the movie suffers from being...utter crap. Imdb gives it a generous 2/5.
Won't be holding my breath for the 25th anniversary release on Blu-ray either...
That aspect is disappointing. The bit where the Arnie character blasted pie after pie at that bloke would have been brilliant if it had been one of the girls.
It is a good, well done pie fight, let down by the fact that there are too many blokes and not enough girls. The pies are excellent, it is a kind of routine which I would like to do, but with all girls, and all of them dressed up, in smart, sexy outfits. I like the anarchic, destructive element, the fact that there aren't any plastic sheets down and the set gets trashed as well.
Please enjoy the slim pickings on offer taken from the better 'quality' version en Espanol kindly posted by PieGuyInHull above. Boiled down, there are even fewer pie hits to females than it 'seemed' originally...The barrel scraped so bare that I've even included the throws and two aftermath shots, plus the lady being shoved into the fabric cake as it's just mildly titillating.
Yup, for a "cornerstone" of WAM cliptapes from 1994 until Whenever People Stopped Buying Cliptapes, it's absolutely awful.
I feel like I need to upload the "work print" just to confirm there WERE some great female hits that got left on the cutting room floor. The redhead, in particular, has a nice bit where she gets nailed a few times and actually does a pratfall going OVER a table and onto the floor. Shame the quality is so crap.
love the "Kung Fu fighting" gag...should have got a "best use of marital arts in a bad comedy film" award....the director was probably waiting his whole career to stage that gag!
Do you guys want to see the entire thing then? It runs for a solid 20 minutes of just pies.... and probably another 10 if you count the scene after with the redhead still pie-covered. (I think they cut that scene out of the final edit.)
But you edit that down to ONLY female hits, and it's still not great. There's some good ones here and there though. The redhead for one gets a perfect pie shoved in her face... Unfortunately it's not really a closeup and not much aftermath.
Enjoy! It's super long but there's a couple solid female hits if you hunt. Go to 10 minutes to see the redhead fall over a table... and then get a close-range pie after for her trouble.
Thanks, Rich!! It was pretty much as described. Surprising how many misses/half hits there were. Some bad aim from the prop department. Even with that and the bad quality I love this kind of stuff. I"ll take a fuzzy old VHS of a middling pie fight ANY day. That's my jam.
If anyone remembers Film Threat Magazine, their 2nd ever "glossy" issue featured Traci Lords as the cover girl. They interviewed her about her transition to legit film and such. At least part of the interview was with her on set, covered in pie. It's described by both the author and Traci and there was a production pic of her covered in pie in the article. That was 1992 and I've only now seen the fabled "full cut" of the sequence.
The "redhead" is Amy Yasbeck, who several years later would marry John Ritter. I only skimmed this video (Thanks, Rich!) but I had not seen the guy in the animal suit in any of the versions I'd previously seen.
There are several cute bits in the pie fight - sendups of movies like "Terminator" spaghetti westerns, but it's otherwise a terrible film. Look how many people took their credits as "Alan Smithee" or variations -- the stock copout when a writer or director knows a film is awful and doesn't want his or her name on it.
Haha, no one is arguing this isn't an absolute DOG of a film.
In fact, The Great Race (or maybe Bugsy Malone) might be the last film with a true pie fight that wasn't horrendous.... I'm actually thinking of a movie so bad (or so mired in legal troubles) that it's still NEVER come out. Presenting Spring Break '83....
Near as I can tell (and there was other video floating around years ago), there's multiple pie scenes... The first just involves the male leads getting hit, but the second is a pie blowout on the beach. You can see Downtown Julie Brown get pied in the trailer, but also some other girls got it pretty good too. ANYWAY... Forgot Alan Smithee, this movie is too bad to even be released! I assume it'll leak out eventually but who knows if we'll get any good footage.
"For a moment there, I really thought things were going to be different between us. But then you disgraced the World Hunger Organization and all our supporters, you humiliated me, you lied to me, and you ruined my house!!"
To think this speech was cut was cut from the Nutt House! What glorious dialogue! I couldn't have written it better myself! And to be said by a beautiful woman covered in pie. Wow.
